I think of solid works as a mechanical engineering program but I don't have a lot of basis for that thinking. Sketchup would work to make garage plans. If you are stick framing there are some extensions that do so much of the wall/roof framing quickly it's great.

I use Solidworks for looking at layouts and moving garage things around like workbenches, toolboxes, etc. and modeling parts. More of a 3d perspective and I’m just faster at making parts/assemblies.

I did all my architectural plans using Revit and Revit LT though.

I’ll most likely just have someone more geared to building plans do it. City hall wouldn’t understand SW.
