I wise man said, “The work builds the garage, not the other way around.”

List 1-5 (or less, 5 max for discussion sake), the capabilities you spent your time and effort setting up. Me:

1. Automotive (and Chevy trucks specifically)
2. Gunsmithing and reloading
3. General Homeowner (includes wood working, painting, etc)
4. Basic welding
5. Man cave - chairs and stuff for beers/cigars/tv

In order
1. Supporting my racing habit. Including trailer and tow vehicle
2. Learning how to weld (to further support #1)
3. Computer work. It is surprising how much space it takes to really tear an old PC apart
4. Homeowner equipment. Lawnmowers, weedeaters and chainsaws all work better when properly maintained
5. Firearm maintenance and support. Welding targets from #2 will come in handy here too.

Originally it was a place for automotive tools, homeowner repairs and storage.
Now, there isn't any room. I wouldn't know where to start.

Well, our attached garage is only used for two things- parking the wife's car, and keeping our smoker and gas grill out of the weather.

The barn (my shop) is for:

1) Machining work
2) Mechanical work, car/tractor/machine restorations and repairs
3) Welding
4) Wood working
5) At the moment, stuff storage

1. Welding/Fabrication
2. Automotive Work
3. Homeowner Repairs
4. Carpentry Projects

The gap between 2 and 3 is large. The gap between 3 and 4 is tremendous.

Got a second story bonus room that we call the "penthouse" for the man cave. This thread reminds me I need to get my welder and wire in a plug for it.

I’m lucky to have two spaces.

The attached 20x24 garage:

1. Dedicated woodworking space.
2. Very light home repair with a basic set of tools so I don’t have to go to the shop.

The 40x70x14 pole barn:
1. Automotive and semi truck repair and customization.
2. Welding and metalworking to support number 1.
3. Dry storage for my automobiles.
4. Storage of wood for the woodworking shop
5. Long term storage of things I should prolly toss in the trash.

I have two stories in my garage.

First floor:
1. General homeowner/property maintenance projects
2. Woodworking
3. Fixing my tractor or other power equipment
4. Boy Scout Troop projects & merit badge instruction
5. "Puttering around"

Second Floor:
1. Lumber storage
2. Model railroad building & operation
3. Other hobby-related stuff
4. General storage
5. Dartboard & a decrepit leather chair for furnishings

I don't drink or smoke, so no need for a "man-cave". The TV can stay inside the house, all I need is a basic Wi-Fi laptop and some good tunes for the shop.
