Dave, looks really good. Thanks for sharing with us!

Most importantly, looks like you have revamped it into a space you enjoy and can have buddies over to shoot the breeze, wrench a little and maybe have a beer or ten. ;)

Well, the red car got back on the road tonight - he found some spacers the right size so the wheels would clear the calipers, and some longer wheel bolts got overnighted in and we got it all buttoned up tonight.

Noel (devil dog) says "Damn, those are some big brakes!)

I hold shop days at my shop for the local MINI club and this car belongs to one of the club members......those are Stoptech (big $$$$!) brakes under 18" wheels, you can fit 19's on a MINI with the right offset, but it's not a very good solution. I don't know what size the rotors are, but they were huge compare to the OEM's!

Actually the Jag is probably the lightest car he owns. It's only about 2500lbs

Mach V is right, the Jag weighs in at a featherweight 2500 lbs, both my MINI and Audi are heavier than that.

Of course, not having A/C, cruise control, power windows, power steering, air bags, radar, head up displays, crush zones, power seats with heat, or many other modern conveniences helps.

The lift seems tailor made for a MINI, I turned the lift 180º so the lift cylinders were on the other end and that made for lots of room under the front of the car. However, I don't think my electrical source there is big enough, it's only 15A and I think it needs 20, so I may have to relocate the pump so I can access one of my 20A circuits.

Nothing in the way on the power plant end of things....

and plenty of clearance, Clarence.....

I could have gone up another notch on the safety without getting too close to the opener, but the garage door has to be closed and I had to remove the antenna from the top of the car too, but this is actually a perfect height for most of the things I do on the car.

Still plenty of room up top....

I'm very pleased so far.....

My garage door opener sits over the door...probably gives me an extra foot of room. Can you just change the 15A fuse and outlet where you want to plug in?

I have plenty of 20A recpt's, I just need to roll the pump over to the other side of the car, then I can plug it into one of them. I thought I'd like it in the middle between the doors, but actually that turned out not to be a good spot for it anyway.

And no, it's not a good idea to put a 20A breaker in where a 15A is now, the wires are not rated for the extra current. When I moved here I added a bunch of 20A recpt's with 12ga wire on 20A breaker, I just need to use one of them instead.

I doubt I need anymore height, for most anything I do now I have plenty of room underneath.

So I got my carpets back down, these were cast offs from a uniform company, they were in good condition tho, I just gave them a good wash and vacuum and they look fine. I used to have the long runners on the driver's side of each bay so you could step onto them when getting out of the car but with the lift there I moved one in front of the new tool boxes, the other is in the other bay for my wife, that way she doesn't track snow and goop in at night when the weather's bad - since my car lives outside I clean my feet on the way in anyway.

I had loaned a bunch of equipment including my welder to a friend to do some work on his Moke and he brought it back a few days ago, so I got all that stuff put away too. My garage is finally coming together tho I still can't find some little stuff when I need it. The basement reorganization is next, I'll tackle it this winter while the weather's bad and by spring I should have it all done.

I'm going to be selling a lot of stuff on Ebay this winter and spring, time to lighten my load a bit.

Rewire the garage?

You mean so I can get the pump to a 20A outlet? That was no problem, I just rolled it to the other side of the garage where I already had a 20A socket just waiting. Easy peasy.

My compressor lives behind that rack, under the stairs, so I had a place to plug in the pump too.....

It should easily, the Allroad weighs 3800lbs and it's rated for 6,000.

Although I usually take it up to the college (where I teach automotive courses) and use the shop there if I need to do anything to the Audi. It's only 5 miles from the house and of course it's free to me - but I do have to work around class schedules.

Thanks for all the replies and comments.....

My next move, I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense to buy an inexpensive Craigslist 40" (or so) flat panel TV and hang it on the wall over the new bench.

I'd have to run a cable out there or buy one of those transmitter deallybobs, but the internet works fine out there since the garage is under the bedroom with the router in it.

It's a little hard to justify in general, but I think it could be handy for when I hold MINI Club shop days - some extra entertainment for those guys who are just hanging out - keeps them out of the way of the guys who are working and so on, and of course great for internet look ups..... there's no room for a couch so it's not going to become a hang out or garage themed den.

Right now I just bring the Laptop down to the garage on shop days....I have an older little used PC I could maybe put down there, and the perfect place to hide "the works", I also have wireless mouse and keypad......hmmm, need to think this thru some more.

Oh, and I just remembered, the older PC has Windows media in it - so it has TV and radio tuners built in.......this might be starting to make sense.

Sure it makes sense. The older you get, the larger the TV gets. And it makes sense to have one in the garage if the weather gets bad, so you can watch the local news. If momma gets mad and you are in the doghouse, you can go to the garage and catch the local news to make sure you aren't on it. And on Saturdays, you can catch up on PowerBlock TV to see what they are working on. Yep...makes perfect good sense to have a large flat panel TV.

BUT....keep an eye out for WallyWorld specials and maybe pick up a new one. I think I paid like $300 a while back for a new 42" Panasonic for the garage. I like it also, because I can put a jump drive in it and scroll through all of the pictures of cars that I have web snatched and kept in a file on the computer.

My latest acquisition.....and old auto shop buddy from high school called me and said he'd had this since about our senior year and didn't need it anymore and gave it to me!

Nice memorabilia!

Is there any value to this, maybe for someone outfitting a garage from the 50's and 60's?

Oh and for some of our younger members, it's a bubble style tire balancer.....

I just used a wireless cable box from at&t, not sure if other cable providers have the wireless boxes though. It works perfectly in my garage and made the tv install work since the tv only needs power at that point.

So, you have a "cable" box that transmits wirelessly to your TVs?

My cable box dosn't do that, but I'm intrigued by the idea of sending internet thru the power lines in the house.....I take it you need a transmitter at the modem and a receiver at the (each) computer?

Could you also do this with the TV?

Looking online I see the newer versions of these balancers selling for anywhere from $50 to $200!

I'm just going to clean it up and keep it I think.

Just read your thread! Exciting to see someone local with the HF 44's, those are on my SUPER SHORT list for obtaining.

Any updates? I might swing by during one of your mini days and introduce myself!

Sure happy to have you....the first one will probably be in April, I have too much already going on in March.

As for updates, about all I've done in there since is work on my cars. It's a mess right now, leaves blown in under the doors and I carried a bale of straw thru there to the back yard and it made a mess too - just waiting for a couple of warm days to clean it out again.

I'm planning to go to Cars & Coffee at the KC Auto Museum this Sat if it doesn't snow, might see you there?

Jagmandave, please send that bubble balancer to me right away. They are very dangerous and should not be in the possession of amateur mechanics. The bubble has been known to build up extreme pressure and explode.
I'm only concerned for your safety and am not trying to scam you.Yes,I did recently move here from Nigeria, why do you ask????????

Since this thread has already been resurrected, I thought I'd tell you that you did a great job on the garage! Especially by documenting it for us on GJ! Now you need to make some progress on that basement and update the thread! :D

Jagmandave - I just wanted to say I've enjoyed seeing your garage transformation project. You did a fine job of documenting it, and it looks MUCH more usable now than before. It's giving me a push to finish working on my mess of garage. Again, great job (the HF 44" bench/tool box setup looks great) and thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Note: If you're still planning to have some cement work done, you might consider cutting out a notch in the floor for the scissor lift, so that only the arms are sticking up. This would remove the need for the boards on either side and you could cut out a channel to run the houses from the pump to the lift. Just an idea..

No budget for flooring at this time, truth be told I'd be perfectly happy with a nice smooth, sealed or polished concrete floor - although I do like the look of the coated ones. I know the flakes are great for hiding flaws, but if I were to coat it I'd go with a nice light grey - flakes and things can camoflage dropped parts, and my eyesight is not that great to start with!

The reason I went with the "brilliant white" upper paint was for reflectivity.....

Today was a red letter day, the SS workbench top was finished so I went and picked it up - looks terrific. Of course this is the last time it will ever be this clean or pristine and unscratched - after all, it's a workbench!

I've got some cabinets ordered to go above this bench and the one on the other side, the hope is that I can get all the stuff off the walls and into the boxes and cabinets and eliminate the shelves completely. The last piece of the puzzle will be some sort of bin arrangement for the nuts, bolts and hardware.....

This is what the other side looks like now - still a lot of work to be done!

View media item 34316
The other toolbox will come out and be sold or put downstairs to corral some of my woodworking stuff down there, then I might move the metal bench inwards towards the wooden one, or if I leave it there a 20 ton press will fit nicely in the gap!

How is the steel countertop attached to the wooden frame? Looks like it is just resting on it.
