So I don't post too often here but am a regular reader. Definitely appreciate all of the discussions...I also want to thank you all for feeding my neurosis for I am a fellow tool addict. I am an avid DIY'er, this is my first garage. My wife and I bought our first place here in San Diego a year ago. My last shop was a 8x7 Costco shed, so the upgrade has been awesome.

Anyway, I've been obsessing over a new tool box on this site for weeks...I really want a HF 72", but they are more than double the price of a 44". I wouldn't get rid of my current box as I've had it since high school. After rearranging today, I think the 44" would go great next to my craftsman box, so I would still be gaining a lot of space and have extra money for more tools and Miata parts. (I'm gearing up to do suspension bushings and shocks.

Here's the current set up, what do we think??

Looks good but you need more light in there. I'd keep my old boxes. You should be able to put the HF box under the bench on the raised concrete area. Tool boxes make space. Deep drawers and shelves are inefficient as you can't find what's on the bottom and there's a lot of wasted space. Thin drawers hold all the tools on top so you can see them when you open the drawers. You can add a 72" or 2 - 44"s next year in place of the counter the plane is on.

If at all possible i would move the entrance door all the way across to a corner.. seems like a lot of work but it will give you the option of a seriously nice long bench across one wall freeing up the sides of the garage for other equipment

2oolhound that's a good point, I'll have to do some measuring...

JonnyMac I wish I would have posted this before I painted my house and put in a new door! That thought never crossed mind, the middle door makes it weird.

I really want to drywall/finish the garage, I'm not quite that motivated yet. Plus bathroom/kitchen remodel will probably be first. Most of our work has been undoing all the weird things the PO did...she had an old fridge full of old paint, empty plastic containers (think mayo jars) and other ****.

I agree, you definitely need more lights in there.
I have a similar Craftsman box chest that you do, same reason as you. I got it back in high school so wanted to keep it, I just waited until Black Friday sale, and bought an identical one for 50% off.

Looks nice.

if I could offer any advice for your next step in you workshop it would be to Rent an airless and prime and paint everything from the walls up white.

It will help with lighting dramatically and isn't a huge expense or allot of work.

Lights would be good, the more the better (says the man with a cave darn near...) Also, I would go with a box like this:
https://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/tls/5552126809.html
It would match your current box, isn't much more than the HF 44", allows you to keep the underbench for compressor type storage and doesn't have big footprint. If not that one, they pop up on CL all the time.

Good luck!

As someone who has the US General 44" box (plus top and two side cabinets), I wish I'd have gone for the 72". It only took me a little over a year to fill this one up and the deeper drawers on the 72" box would definitely be nice.
