Hello everyone. I've been a long time lurker on this site, seeing many great garage setups here and cool ideas and in the 5 years I've owned my house I've always wanted to get my garage into decent shape. I'm a pretty good mechanic and love wrenching on my own toys and helping a few friends here and there but I never learned much in home repair and modification. When I moved into my home in 2011 my garage was "mostly" drywalled with no seams sealed and no paint or primer put up. Here is a shot of before I started my refresh:

Another angle:

My first original plan was to put drywall joint compound and joint tape on a seam to see how it would turn out. It just so happened that right after I started one of my neighbors who's a contractor shows up to hang out and he laughs at my attempts and my tooling. He runs home and shows up with his fancy trowels and blades and whatever and does one seam for me to demonstrate. He loans me his tools and says good luck on my project, hold onto them as long as I needed. Here is where I ended up:

Slow but steady progress.

Here at this phase I added primer where the joint compound was dry and sanded and the unfinished parts are where I was having trouble with the compound cracking so I didn't prime those areas yet. Also you'll notice how the previous owner "mostly" drywalled the garage because in the back right corner you can see the studs because he left that part out.:dunno:

Also in the back left corner the previous owner did the same leaving the studs open:

At this stage I put up white paint on the lower half of the garage and then I thought about how frustrated I was with the old cabinets that were hanging on the wall. I liked the idea of having cabinets but the ones that were there had fixed shelves in them that were much too small. I could hardly fit anything in them so they got loaded with whatever **** would fit.

Off came the cabinets to reveal a pleasant surprise:

My attempt at fixing this went like this:

More practice joint sealing...

I ended up leaving the open spot on the left side as it had a few electrical outlets and it would be covered by the green cabinet.

This was a taste of what was to follow:

Then one night ended like this:

I put my wife to work on some of the smaller details.

And to replace the cabinets that were removed:

Clearly Jackson is not impressed.

After many weeks of working on this alone. I needed my wife to be the professional cabinet installer that she was destined to become so that we could get these new cabinets up:

Now that I was nearing the end I wanted to tackle some of the smaller details like refinishing my workbench. Polyurethane clear gloss from minwax.

Fast forward to today and while not yet complete I'm happy with where this is going. Still a bit of cleaning and reorganizing to do but I feel much more relaxed now that the major stuff is out of the way.

Future plans:
Upgrading to a larger tv
Repairing concrete cracks
Grinding the floor with Home Depot grinder
Epoxy floor
Hoping to get all this done before summer.

Your progress looks great so far! Do you plan on drywalling and insulating the ceiling? Seems like the winters might be cold in Connecticut.

I wasn't planning on closing up the ceiling. The winter gets cold but the garage stays tolerable as it's attached to the house. It has to be less than 20* outside to get the garage down to freezing.

Maybe down the road I'll change my outlook and decide to close it up. Right now my sights are set on the floor.

I really like the red color on the walls - makes the place pop. Are you thinking a color for the epoxy as well? With so many cars gray, silver, or black now days; the coloring in the walls and floors really make the cars stand out.

Your garage looks much better now, finishing the ceiling will help make it a lot brighter inside. BTW, your car looks great with those wheels/tires.

Thanks guys. You guys are really pushing for the finished ceiling. I think that may be beyond my skill level. At the very least I'll need an extra set of hands to help out. It will come later down the road.

For flooring options, I think I'm going to go with Legacy Industrial and either light grey or off white with the poly clear coat. I'm afraid that if I try the red it will not look good if it doesn't match well with the walls. It will be a solid color with no flake as I hate the flake look personally.

Looks great so far. That red upper section is very eye popping. I heard a rumour that Mitsibushi was dropping the Lancer, is that true? If so, what are they thinking?

Who knows what Mitsu is thinking or planning... many current rumors are suggesting a return with an awd hybrid. The lancer and ralliart will carry on but the Evolution is done with the '15 model year. Mine is a 14.

Pardon my misspelling of "Mitsubishi"!

The end of the EVO baffles my mind. I also heard from a guy at the local Auto Show that Subaru was pulling the plug on the STi, too. Not sure if there's truth to that.

Regardless, keep up the great work in your garage. Keep the photos and updates coming.

In the past few weeks I got quite a bit done. The main thing was my epoxy floor which is the 600 sq ft kit from legacy industrial consisting of primer, color coat, and the poly urea clear coat. The end result is far from perfect but I am happy with the huge improvement from bare concrete floor.

In addition to the floor, other projects included new windows and trim, surround sound speaker wiring and setup, mounting the tv, and applying the baseboard molding.
