Just a thought on rust prevention.... I got so tired of having to repaint the steel gates an handrails around my house. My wife wanted powder coating and, on top of that, she found a place that does "metalizing". They shoot molten zinc on the pieces and it embeds. We did that and then had them powder coated. It's been great for many years now.

I've had them do several pieces for my garage as well - like a grinder stand.

For example:

Sorry, I was picking parts up and trying to post while waiting...

To get the side belts off, I have to unbolt the seats because of the factory bolts. It makes it a pain in the ****.

KIMG0594.JPG

To resolve this, I picked up some new hardware. Grade 8. 7/16"-20 bolts and friends. $11 for this.

New belt in and seat rebolted in.

Time to install the rear end braces. Uh oh.KIMG0598.JPG

They are too long. Apparently, I cut the tube to length I needed and welded the threaded ends on. I didn't account for actual finished length.

Some how I totally forgot about this. I have the ends to fix it but never did.

I hate when that happens...

I always do stuff like that -- but I usually cut them too short!
At least you've already got the replacement tips on hand.

Yet, it kept happening. While it was on Jack stands, I checked out the anti-roll bar. I left myself a note (on the shop whiteboard) to check the bolts.

They were fine but a rod end wasn't.
KIMG0601.JPG

So I placed an order with Summit that night and road tripped up in the morning when they opened.
Spare parts plus the one I need.

That was remedied and on to flush the coolant and I find a fuel fitting leaking. I thought I had tightened it up and was fine.

So I started looking and found a few things that needed corrected. So last night was a trip to Jeg's will call pick up at the warehouse.

Fortunately I live close enough that I can make the drive to either one or in some instances, both in one day.

Exhaust is on the car and next up is emptying the shop of a few items to hopefully sell at the track this weekend.

I'm surprised there isn't a place close to you that you can buy hardware by the pound. Last time I did that I think it was $3.99/lb with 1 lb minimum, I make sure I always get at least that much.

Oh, there is a place close by. I generally buy in bulk at TSC.

The issue was the type of fasteners. Those are Grade 8, which are more expensive than Grade 5 & Grade 2. Then factor in they are 7/16", not a huge seller and they are fine thread. So it becomes a little bit more of a "specialized" hardware than say just a coarse thread 1/2" Grade 8 bolt.

The local Ace hardware is not cheap. I'd guess they were 10% higher priced with the previous owner and then sold out to a local chain ownership. I think prices went up by another 10%.

However, they have a pretty good selection of specialty hardware, types, sizes and thread pitches. So if I need a certain item, I go there so I'm not chasing my tail.

I've been so Summit a couple times, but I didn't know Jegs was nearby as well. Pretty slick.
Jeg's main store us on 11th Avenue in Columbus, on the south side of the state fairgrounds and right off the 270 exit.

The warehouse is on 42 south coming out of Delaware. They have a will call pick up window. Call the 1-800 number, verify it is available for will call pick up and place the order. It's a 45 minute drive for me to go there and saves probably 15- 20 minutes of driving in Columbus traffic. . . accidents, trucks, construction and general ****** drivers.

Jeg's will call, 45 minutes
Jeg's main store, hour/5 minutes
Summit hour/15-20 minutes.

Jeg's mail order, 3-4 days
Summit mail order, next day or day after if in stock @Tallmage.

I feel pretty fortunate to have a TSC, Ace Hardware, and an Atwoods all in the town I work in but sadly all on the opposite side which means a 10 minute detour on the way home.

Ace seems to have the best selection and I can even buy individual taps/dies there in odd sizes up to about 3/4" but they don't sell fine thread Gr. 8 by the pound. Atwoods on the other hand will, it is nice to buy a 4" long 1/2"x20 Gr. 8 and spend less than $1. Definitely a nice selection for a relatively small town.

Living on the west side of PA, I tend to get my order from summit in the next day delivery. I've always wanted to go to summit but I keep forgetting that I'm traveling close by or I'm in a hurry as it is.

Oh well, Summit has been getting a good chunk of my paycheck lately so they can ship it for free to me....

I agree. You just have to know where and when to take advantage of the available resources.

It's a nice store and if you plan the trip accordingly, I believe they do some car shows during the summer in the parking lot.

I usually hit 5 Guy's a few miles up the road when I go.

So one of the next projects was a mount for the 4 wheeler. Getting fuel at the track is a little pain as I had to strap the fuel jug on the front rack.

So I needed to remedy it.

KIMG0623.JPG

Bent up some steel rod and broke out the welder again. Added some flat bar and muffler clamps. Tossed a crate in the center. I believe it spent a former life in the service of hauling moo juice.

KIMG0624.JPG

Perfect for the fuel jug.

Been working on another project, which includes welding and had an issue. Well, actually 2. Last time I used the welder, it was acting funny, like it didn't want to find wire right.

The other was trying to battle with the fridge. That one about drove me nuts.

So as I continued on the current project, the welder got worse. I popped open the cover and started looking. I found an issue with the spool of wire.

KIMG0652.JPG

Notice both sides are screwed up.

A few updated pictures. The first one is the front tie down, painted and bolted on.

KIMG0661.JPG

This is the FEL bucket. Chain hook and the D-rings for tying it down on the previously shown bucket mount. The bucket skin is sandwiched by the hook plate and another plate on the inside of the bucket.

Next project was getting a new spool of wire and easily completed that task.

So I was back in business. I wanted to mount a tool box on this tractor as it had none. I thought about it for a while and came up with an idea... A .50 cal ammo can. Conveniently, I have one from my Marine Corps days.
So I started to mock it up.

As work progressed, an issue began to arise again. I thought it was me till I got to looking.

KIMG0666.JPGKIMG0667.JPG

This spool of wire is doing the same damn thing, tangling up. Is it me ? The previous spool ran great since I got the welder. I never had an issue making the bucket mount for the dump trailer.
