Man, I can't help but notice that wood-burner of yours is one big mo' fo'! I love it, and I bet its a savior in the winter! I have a double barrel wood stove in mine, and it keeps it toasty warm! I don't mind scrounging for wood either, gives me a good workout and the price is right..... free 99! :D

Awesome work too!

It easily keeps it in the 70's without trying. More than once I have opened up the attic to try to vent out excess heat or left the garage because I got it too hot.

Re: garage refurb

Great Job NuttsGT!!

Your place is looking great, and you really seem to be a "jack of all trades" or maybe
it's more like "nutt of all trades" :) You have really done an outstanding job on the house, garage and garage-shed transformation. The wrap around porch on the house is awesome, and the new overhang you put on the front of the garage is nice too.

I hung vinyl for the first time when i did my garage and found it to be kind of fun; if you messed up a piece it was easy enough to just reuse the scrap somewhere else.

keep up the good work!

Thank you.

I'll agree about the vinyl siding, it does seem enjoyable most of the time till you get to that one spot and you start. . . :headscrat with the trim. The house was the first siding I had hung. I asked a few question to friends and co workers. I've seen some low lifes hang it and figured if they could do it, it must not be that hard and that I could do it too.

Re: garage refurb

Heck yeah, I'm smiling. Other than a few little things to move and putting the chimney pipe back in, the back corner is done. I can proceed to the outside again.

07132012finishedcorner001.jpg

I snapped a few pictures of the blast cabinet. Since I posted pictures a few days ago showing the vent to the outside, I figured I'd show how I have it set up.

From the side, a basic overall picture.
07132012finishedcorner005.jpg

Underneath I have my blast sand (right side) and glass bead on the left. In the center is a clean and empty 5 gallon bucket to drain the sand into. You might notice the blocks the cabinet sits on. Raising it up 1 1/2" makes it easier for me to use and allows the sand to side underneath on HF dolleys.

Re: garage refurb

On the left side of the cabinet, you can see where the dust is sucked out.
07132012finishedcorner002.jpg

This is the vacuum that I have been using. I went cheap since a buddy told me he has runined decent vacs with his cabinet. I decided to try this little one first. It works but it's not quite powerful enough and will get replaced when it dies. You can see where I have the exhaust coupled with a Furnco to the vent pipe.

07132012finishedcorner003.jpg

I tried it this morning after I hooked it up. It seems to work fine. I could see some (what looked like) sand on the flashing of the roof vent. Any sand that makes it's way out on to the roof will merely get washed off when it rains .. . .if we ever get an y more rain.

Re: garage refurb

I didn't know how badly I needed a blast cabinet until after I bought it. I probably should have bought the larger unit like yours. Then again, I have filled my space with too much already. I did manage to avoid the mess in the shop by putting my blast cabinet, vacuum and (also too small) parts washer on a utility wagon. I can comfortably sit and blast for quite a while sitting in the shade alongside the garage. When I'm through, it gets wheeled into the small shop/shed at the back of the yard.

Re: garage refurb

Wheeling it outside is a great idea for you guys in Florida. lol.

I always wanted one and probably would still want one but I came across this one. It was in the clearance section at Summit for $75. The box was mangled and a few pieces were bent. They were easily straightened and I put it together. I'm happy with my seventy-five dollar investment.

Looks like you have been keeping busy. The shop is turning out well and appears to be nicely planned. Always have enjoyed your thread and comments on others. Take care.

Thanks Ody. Most of the stuff got put back where it was. The exception was one cabinet due to me moving the attic access. The other big item I moved wa the welder, it went from the side wall to next to the press, beside the welding table. The layout seems to work for me so I didn't want to move stuff around.

Re: garage refurb

This is where it started today. I've posted this picture before but it helps tell the story. Last fall I sided this small section as I didn't want to leave the OSB exposed. I cut down a couple of pieces of siding doing it. I figured I could easily use the shorter cut pieces elsewhere on the garage.
04302012015.jpg

Yesterday morning, I pulled the siding down along with the J-channel. This exposed the one sheet of OSB that isn't foil faced. I neede to put some trim around the window. I decided to build it out with some 2x4 instead of 1x4 stock.

Re: garage refurb

After the 2x4 stock was screwed into place, I began one of the jobs that I do not like. . . wrapping. I took my time and it wasn't bad. I did have to do some trimming as it was against a glass block window and not smooth. I ran a bead of RTV down at the window before I put the coil stock down. After it was down, I run another bead to help seal it up. Then some J-channel around the window.
07172012siding002.jpg

I choose to use RTV around the entire window instead of regular caulk because I had 4 different materials, concrete block, glass block, wood and aluminum coil stock. I figured since they are expand and contract at different rates, RTV would be the most flexible and forgiving. :dunno:

Lastly, I nailed on the starter strip, corner trim and a few pieces of siding.
07172012siding003.jpg

I was interrupped by a few paged in runs, but that's all for a good cause and I overlook that. The heat yesterday keep me warm and moving slow. I tried to take it easy, stay hydrated and cool. I suppose it didn't help, wearing a black T shirt and standing in front of foil faced OSB on a 95 degree, clear sky day. :shocking:

Re: garage refurb

Any updates?

Yes, I have made some progress but haven't taken pics. I was busy last week, our local volunteer dept (my new side gig from my full time profession) had their festival this past weekend and I didn't get much done.

I'll take some pics today.

Re: garage refurb

When I left off, I had started on the west side. I finished that the other day but hadn't taken any pictures. You can see how dirty the siding was from sitting out in the "barn" at Menard's for a while.

07302012backsiding001.jpg

I had started on the garage shed corner the other day but I ended up stopping due to setting up and working on our festival. This is where I started today.

Stepping back a little bit gives this view.

Then from the front, you get this view. Yes, that fence was a PITA siding around.

Re: garage refurb

I siding up to this point today on the garage shed. I have to add another piece of corner trim before I go farther.
07302012backsiding005.jpg

Since it got about 90 degrees today, I made a trip to town (sitting in the truck and enjoying the A/C) and picked up another PT 1x4 and some firring strips to build out the back side.
07302012backsiding006.jpg

Tomorrow's plan is to insulate and sheath that section of the back wall like I did the west wall. I need to aleast get the inside corner sheeted so I can put up the J-channel on both sides.

** please fogive the last picture, it was getting dark and the camera wouldn't focus properly **

Looks like great progress has been made in-spite of weather conditions. Hope that the progress made today will bring a smile to your face.

Take care.

Re: garage refurb

I put the insulation in as I went, just some 3/4" white styrofoam like I did on the west wall.

In progress from earlier today.

After the seams and screws were taped over.

I'm taking a break from the heat and will go back out later and make some more progress.

LOL, that pays, this doesn't, it actually costs me !

I did go back this evening for a bit, put some J-channel up, cut a piece of starter strip and then it started to rain. As much as I wanted to get some more done, we need the rain more.

I put some siding up today in the back corner. I feel like I see some progress after today.

08012012backsidingtemp007.jpg

I also found out I don't like standing in front of foil faced OSB on a sunny day. Notice how much brighter the T-111 with the reflection of the foil, even though it's already in the direct sunlight.

Re: garage refurb

Just for the heck of it, I checked out the outdoor sensor for the thermometer/clock. In the shade at the front of the garage. 79.7°

08012012backsidingtemp001.jpg

Then I moved it (taped to a 2x2 about 20" off the ground) to the back side of the garage with nothing done to it. 87.6°
08012012backsidingtemp004.jpg

Next I placed it in the reflection shown in my last post. 102.3°

Re: garage refurb

Eric, you may be interested in the Myth Busters episode where they attempted to sink a "pirate ship" all with mirrors. Same concept as using a magnifying glass. Long story short, more sun rays being put on one spot will make it super hot (and possibly catch on fire).

Actually I've seen that episode but forgot about it. What did go through my head was the scene at the end of Sahara on top of the tower with all the mirrors.

I would be thinking seriously about a taurp from the eave to make some shade.

...but I only spent about an hour outside today. It was 111F here this afternoon.

I had one set up while I was doing the chimney. I didn't have one big enough to cover both walls since I was doing them at the same time. Now that the foil is covered up, it won't be as bad.

Place is looking great - hard work in the sun will make winter MORE fun!

Thank you sir, I seem to like winter more while I'm in the garage, quiet, peaceful and nobody wants to venture out to bother you.

Thank you, I greatly appreciate it.

I have had family that work construction (they helped pour my floor) and I know what they deal with. FIL always told me, "you don't want to work construction, you'll sweat your *** off in the summer and freeze the rest of it off during the winter".

On a smaller level we deal with the weather at the FD too, we just don't think about it much. Good weather or bad, we get to enjoy it all. :wtf:

Re: garage refurb

Awesome build/thread! I just read this entire thread from the beginning and didnt want to post until i finished it. You have a great work ethic and great skills even though you deny it most the time lol.

I love old buildings. I used to work in an old service garage when i was in highschool with a leaky hydraulic lift that would drop a few inches every so often! That was fun.. Couldnt beat the character of the building though. Anyways, congrats on such a great build. And btw, what are the overall dimensions on this building? I dont believe i saw them in the thread.

Sorry I'm on page 20 and just cant wait to ask my burning question: Why all the love for the garage and none for the wood burner? Surely there's something you could do for the old heap?
