Re: garage refurb

I was thinking the exact same thing! I had forgotten how much of an eyesore it was so long ago!

The entire place needed so much work as it was neglected for several years. I wish I could have taken better pictures when we first moved in. Better pics, well atleast had a digital camera and a computer to upload them.

Re: garage refurb

Technically speaking, the front is officailly down. Atleast until I decide what to do with the upper siding. I wrapped the front fascia this morning.

Re: garage refurb

After that was done, I chopped all these dog gone leaves that keep falling. Once that was completed (till tomorrow) I started to organize the garage shed. I wanted to hang all the yard tools in the shed and get them out of the garage. I laid them in the yard between the garages and realized how many I had accumulated.

I picked up a scraper, small scoop shovel and an axe Saturday at the neighbors auction for 8 bucks, I wanted the axe but it was a lot. I also picked up a new Drill Doctor 300 for $12.50, still in the box.
A couple pics of the stuff laying in the yard.

I started thinking, if I went and replaced all these things at one time, there's a chunk of change sitting there.

Re: garage refurb

I took down my racks to hold them, which I made a few years ago. Most of that stuff fit on this upper rack. If you noticed that yellow bungee laying there in the picture above, that was hooked from garage door rail to rail as a safety incase someting tried to fall off.
10242012fasicashed006.jpg

The pick, sledge and maul sat on the lower rack and will now be accompanied by an axe.

10242012fasicashed007.jpg

I built a shelf across the back of the shed above the log splitter. Right now it has a stack of buckets and the ramp for the 4 wheeler sitting on it. I'll work on it more tomorrow.

:eyecrazy: $12.50 for a Drill Doctor!?! Congrats on a great grab Eric! I NEVER fall into deals like that. I did get a Lincoln ProMig 140 for $250 new from a pawn shop, but I can't take credit for the find. I had asked a buddy who makes weekly rounds at all the shops for tools to keep an eye out for me on a 110 welder. I just got the call letting me know it was there and I'd better hurry down there before someone else noticed it was new.

I'd give it up in a heartbeat if our neighbors were staying. They are a great older couple that we will miss. It was one of those things out in his garage that I spotted a week before the auction. I had my mind set on buying it, I was going to run it up if need be. I wanted something that belonged to Herb and the wife picked up 3 Longaberger baskets for cheap ($30 for all 3)

Re: garage refurb

I just stumbled onto this thread. That's a great looking shop! Is it on Route 98? If so, I've driven by it a bunch of times on the way to Eldora and other places. We usually cut down 98 through Sulfur Springs from my dad's place to get to 30.

Congrats on the auction scores!

Re: garage refurb

If we're going to the dirt races, it's just to watch or help a buddy...which means we're coming from a little different direction.

I'll have to pay more attention the next time through there.

I ***** to lose good neighbors. Especially those with a lifetime of stories and experience to share out on the front porch in the early evening.

Re: garage refurb

Your place is looking great.
Looking at your shovel holder and I've got the store bought shovel holder and it works for the most part, but Murphy's Law is I always need the one in the back, so I am trying to figure out a holder for access to all tools. I have an idea but it may require a little more iron to make it work.

I was considering buying some of those bicycle screw in hooks and hanging some of the D handled shovels that rearely get used along the wall from the rafters.

BTW, I did get some organization done in the shed but it's rained the last two days so no pictures. I promise, I will get some as soon as I can.

Re: garage refurb

I took a few more things out to the shed, perfect time time do it with all the rain, wind and **** weather. I bought a couple bike hooks and hung up my two wheeled dolley to get it out of the back room in the garage.
10292012radiopaint006.jpg

Let's see we have shovels (all types), rakes, hoes, an axe, pick, sledge and maul all hanging in the racks I built. Two wheel dolley, more hand tools that are rarely used, mole trap and 2 gallon sprayer. A large rubbermaid box, a collection of 5 gal buckets and 4 wheeler ramp all sittin gon the shelf I made the other night. The log splitter sits under the shelf and behind the 17 cu ft trailer. My $25 MTD push mower, a motar tub hanging above the trailer along side the wheel barrow.

Another shot of the hand tools which I added the bungee again just to keep stuff from falling off onto my head.

Re: garage refurb

3-4 weeks ago, the sound on my TV quit. Then Friday the radio went to hell, then it went onto the floor.
10292012radiopaint001.jpg

I tried to find something fairly cheap Friday evening but such luck for my budget. I came home an found the one my daughter left behind when she moved out. Temporarily hooked up and playing.

Since the weather is getting crappy, I've started to work on the inside again. Right now it's project repaint. I had to move my over flowing kindling box.

Re: garage refurb

Looks good, nice move snagging the daughters radio. I grabbed one my neighbor was tossing because the CD player didn't work. It still was an upgrade to my garage since the old one didn't have an antenna and only picked up one station.

Re: garage refurb

It's going to work for now or until she comes and gets it. I'd like to upgrade to an older home stereo, atleast a receiver and some good speakers. I found a couple of "old school" Fisher components on CL the other night.

Re: garage refurb

I got the stereo up in place, hooked all wiring and it's now jamming out. I was surprised to see that the CD player still worked. I tested it out with some Metallica, "Enter Sandman." Everything was put back in place as this section is done.

Next section, painting in progress at this time. When this area is done, I believe this side of the garage is done.

Thank you, once the old radio died, I was off almost immediately to find a replacement. I can handle not having a TV out there (got a line of one or twom of them) but it's so eeriely quiet with no music playing.

Re: garage refurb

Since I have boredyou with painting pictures,Ithought I might share something more useful. I built this when I had the radial arm saw moved out last Spring.

It's just basically a chute to catch most of the saw dust generated by the saw. While it doesn't catch all of it, it does get about 75% of it. If I had a vac system, it'd be better but this works better than nothing.

I laid out some tape marks on the wall to figure out a size.

I did some figuring and thought something like this should work.

Re: garage refurb

I started to add some sheet metal to it and create the chute, but I felt I worked too hard and needed a break. lol
042212dustcatcher017.jpg

I used some left over coil stock to make the rest of the chute.

Re: garage refurb

This would be the side side. You can see the angle bracket that attaches to the wall. Along with a small block of wood, those are the only attaching points.
10312012radialarmsaw002.jpg

Heres more of a back/side shot.

10312012radialarmsaw001.jpg

The chute dumps into a 5 gallon bucket. The chute does get somewhat full but as long as the saw is running, it creates enough vibration, that it'll empty itself.

Re: garage refurb

Like the sawdust chute!

Thanks.

I decided to take a short break from painting. . . .gets boring real fast. I wanted to try to update one of my garage chairs. I made these frames about 6 years ago. They are out of a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe that was parted out. They were one of my first welding projects when I bought my Hobart welder.
10312012garageseat003.jpg

I wanted to make the chairs roll instead of sliding them across the floor, so I needed some casters. I bought a HF mover's dolley and robbed the casters from that.

Re: garage refurb

I unbolted the seat from the frame and set the seat off to the side on the bench.

10312012garageseat004.jpg

Then I cut some tabs to weld on the frame. The casters are wider than the base so I needed to make the base wider. Only 3 are shown, I cut 4.

Re: garage refurb

I proceeded to weld the tabs on the frame.
10312012garageseat008.jpg

All the tabs welded on and waiting to be ground down.
10312012garageseat009.jpg

EDIT I'd like to add those welds look like **** in the picture. Trust me that are better in person. I did have one issue on the bottom of the last tab and the top of the last two tabs. It was trying to spit and sputter, I thought I had a bad ground. I checked and it was fine. So I tried it again, same thing. This time when I stopped the wire had a ball on the end. That's when I noticed the ball rotating. Appraently, there was a twist inthe wire. I ran out about another 18 inches of wire. This time it was ok.

Casters sitting on top just to see what they will look like.

10312012garageseat010.jpg

It'll be a couple days before I can finish this, I have a few things to get done in the near future. I will be back on it I'm hoping friday evening or Saturday.

Re: garage refurb

Sorry the lack of updates, I've virtually have nothing to show for the last few days.
Sunday-Work 24 hr shift.
Monday- Went directly to Menards after work(got off at 7am) helped the wife make some center pieces for a party and we ran to get some more supplies for them. I did get the wood rack moved back in place and the chimney cap installed.
Tuesday-voted, got paged out for a house fire (volunteer dept) which was a total loss. Came home, grabbed something to eat and took a shower to go to a party for the new sheriff.
Wednesday- work 24 hr shift.

Is it really Thursday already and we are a 1/4 of the way into November ?

Chimney cap, hopefully this will keep some of the rain out.
11082012019.jpg

Full wood rack, ready to test out the chimney cap and cold weather.

Re: garage refurb

Nice and organized wood rack there.

It's actually some of the shelving that used to be in the old post office here in our small burg. I really didn't have a need for it till it dawned on me to make it a wood rack and to stack one on top f th other.

Gonna be able to work this weekend? Supposed to be in the 60s.

I'm basically done outside, so the weather is about unimprtant to me this time of year. I will be out in the garage except for when I'm at work.
