Re: garage refurb

As I pulled the T111 off, I noticed a spot in the styrofoam that would move. I pulled back an edge and saw something that I had forgot about, a window. After I replaced some of the old concrete anchors with Tapcons, I cut the firring strips and styrofoam. This is the window that at one time, many years ago, I bricked up from the inside. One of the previous owners had sided over it.

Since I had taken care of it on the inside, was sheeting and siding over it on the outside, and knew it was going to be a royal PITA to get it out, I left it there. I ripped down some 2x material and started to frame it in. You can also see where I knocked out the bottom motared window ledge, hoping the window would come out easily.

Once it was framed in, I covered that with OSB and replaced the firring strips and foam. Next step is to hang some foil faced OSB over the foam and firring strips.

Re: garage refurb

I got started today by hanging a couple of sheets of OSB up, covering most of the styrofoam. As I hung up a sheet, I taped the seams and over the screw heads with foil tape.

I continued with pulling off the older T-111. Something might have noticed in the pictures was a contrast in the old siding. This is what you see after taking the siding off.

There were two windows in the wall that I had taken out when in about the first year of buying the place. I had a call one night from the wife saying somebody was in the drive way looking in the windows of my garage. Then next day, I went on a security rampage. It included motion lights, these two windows, replacing another with glass block, a new front door and covering two other doors up.

Re: garage refurb

You can see where I had framed the old opening so the siding would be the same depth as the old. The other thing you'll notice is the romex that I had rerun this past winter. I took out the insulation, the framing I had done 12 years ago and reframed the old window once again to make it flush.

After it was framed, I nailed on a piece of OSB to cover the hole. This will get covered as I move across the wall with the foil faced OSB. 3 sheets up and a bunch of old stuff ripped down. All the **** is once again, stacked on my car trailer, waiting to be hauled off.

Re: garage refurb

With that new siding/foiled OSB, your shop's stove will probably keep the place warm for a week! Looking great!

Any thoughts of continuing the front porch roof around the side of the building? Would make for a nice dry place to stockpile your stove fuel. It'd be a hell of a lot more work/money but I'm always glad to spend your money and time! lol

Thanks man.

I never thought of running the porch around the side but did think about extending the back roof for that exact purpose. I decided against it since it would bring the roof line too far and make it easy for someone to get on the roof.

At one time I had wood piled against the side of the garage. I decided to stop that to keep the riff raff of insects away from the garage.

Very nice job. After looking at how you build stuff, I think that garage would survive a hurricane. I feel sorry for the next guy to come along who wants to redo the garage.

Thanks Pete. I guess I have a habit of "overbuilding" when in doubt.

I did hang a couple of sheets of OSB today, not pictures though. I will get a few pictures before I get going again.

Re: garage refurb

I got a little progress done today and I did snap a few pictures. I would have more done but the granddaughter spent last night here so I didn't start till she went home. . .first things first.

Nothing fancy, this is where I left off the other day.

I had one more window that I had to reframe back in. This time, I snapped a picture before I covered the studs with OSB. You'll notice, there is a stud in the center but I also added one where the edge of the 4x8 sheet of foil faced OSB will be, just for the overbuilding factor. I did put it on edge to give a wider face though.

Re: garage refurb

I stepped back and took a picture from the same spot as I have been taking them. It gives the same perspective when comparing before/after pics.

One last picture for the day. I cut the last sheet of T-111 down and pulled it off. This allowed me to add another full sheet of foil faced OSB for the day. Once it was up, it covered the reframed window and I taped all the seams and nail holes.

Hopefully the rain will hold off tomorrow and I can start on the upper row. That'll include pulling off another sheet and a half and removing a vent. I can also put the new vent that matches the siding.

Re: garage refurb

We're getting some progress, little by little. It would go faster but I'm avoiding morning work. ;)
I'm not a fan of having the Sun on my back, reflected on to my front side and then stare in to it's reflection while I'm trying to work. That would be the downfall of using this foil faced OSB.

Top row almost done.

You'll notice that I have a small area under the meter base done. I'm trying to get every bit done that I can before I replace the old electric service. When they disconnect, I won't have any power so it will be all 18V DeWalt for a short time.

Since the Sun had started to go down, I could take picture from my usual vantage point.

I still need to put the vent up tonight to keep the flying riff raff out.

Of all of your pics that I have looked at, I had always thought you had your garage done. At least we don't have the heat that we did last year so it makes it a little more comfortable working outside.

Re: garage refurb

Sorry to disappoint Kevin. I ran out of good weather last year along with the to update the electric service. I knew I wouldn't have enough siding to finish it and didn't want to be almost done and be waiting on back ordered siding or something like that.

I'll get it knocked out this year. Although you wouldn't believe how many people asked if I was going to leave the garage like that, the east side without vinyl siding. I kept thinking to myself, really ? All that work and leave one side look like ****. :headscrat

Looks great! They're never really "done", are they? I may have missed it, but are you going to underground electrical service? I'm really glad I did mine that way.

No, I'm going to stay with an overhead service. Going underground would greatly increase my cost as I'd need to bring in a bucket truck to get the conduit attached to the pole. It'd also involve PUCO to mark the ground since the phone company has a buried line there too.

I could get all that done and then, the farmer down the road is talking about having three phase put in, so everything I do would get moved and redone.

I think I'm just better off to stick with it being overhead, it's a short run and I doesn't really bother me being there.

Re: garage refurb

Made a start on some progress today, honestly it was about as far as I can go for now.

Another view from my "vantage point"

To go any farther, I need to replace the service. I'm going to make a call to AEP on Monday after I talk to the farmer down the road.

On a side note. I had all the old T-111 sitting on my car trailer awaiting a trip to the landfill. Somebody stopped yesterday and asked if they could have a few sheets, yep sure thing. They came back with their trailer and asked if they could have it all. Have at it buddy it's all yours. It saved me a trip and probably $20.

Re: garage refurb

I'm sure this was asked and answered somewhere in the 65 pages, but are there numbers on the heat savings by the foil faced OSB over regular OSB when sided with vinyl?

No numbers just some quick reading on the internet. Using this stuff kept me from using another type of wrap product like Tyvek. Here's a link that might answer your questions on it.

http://products.royomartin.com/products/eclipsetm-energy-guard

Since I use wood and wood only for heat, I can't throw out any "real" numbers just the fact that I had some wood left on the pile after last winter.

Soon I hope, I'm considering replacing the breaker panel too. I figured now is the time.

Its looking good Eric. Being a fire fighter do you worry about the horror stories of vinyl siding?

Re: garage refurb

There was a report of vinyl siding toxic fumes when burning. I think I saw the HBO episode, but of course this is if your shop catches fire and there are other toxic materials through out our shops we need to consider just as well.

I hadn't thought to notice you weren't using a house wrap. That's interesting that the foil face does that job considering you still have seams.

Hell everything puts off toxic fumes when it burns, just like everything causes cancer. It's no big deal, just part of modern life.

All the nail/screw holes and seams are covered with foil tape. Tedious as hell but it keeps me out of the house. :lol_hitti

If you look closely at the first pic in post #1285, you can see the taped seams and random pieces of tape.

Okay, that's a bit nutty. I guess it makes sense though, you do run in to burning buildings for a living. :shocking:

Re: garage refurb

Eric nice job your moving right a long.
I'm trying. I just came back from HD, picked up a 200 amp SQ D QO box and some breakers. The box online lists for $173, they had it marked for $139 and gave it to me for that price. :)

I considered buying a CH BR series or a SQ D Homeline box (to save a few bucks) but since I was using B-day money, I went with the QO box.

Not to mention,we have a QO box in the house when we upgraded the service back in '04, it only made sense. If need be, I can always swap a breaker from one to another in an emergency situation. ;)

Good move, All my boxes get switched to QO boxes when I upgrade. That way I only need to keep one kind of spares, and I never forget which kind I need when I need to add a new circuit.
