I did replace some siding that I've wanted to for a few years. I had a screw up and thought it was a building issue, being built 80 years ago. However, I spotted the issue, atleast what I did to cause it one day coming home. I knew something was off when I sided it but seeing it being my screw up bothered me and not much I could do about it.

I started by pulling some old siding off.

This included laying ladders down lower than normal, so I took some precautions.

Then I put up the new siding. This is the same manufacturer, in the same color but it's a "board & batten" vertical siding.

Simple one day project but included many trips up/down the ladders.

The vertical siding hides the problem and makes it harder to spot.

I like the Ford heeling the ladder on the right.

What caused the issue with the original siding installation?

A simple measuring mistake. Some how I screwed up and built the overhang with an angle over the windows. Either I flat measured wrong, misread the level or something.
The section over the windows has like a 2" drop. You can spot it in the siding if you go back and look at the older pictures.

We do have one issue that needs to get taken care of first. Let me throw this out there, check your health insurance plan for what they'll pay for air ambulance, life flight/med flight or whatever they call it in your area. You might be surprised, doesn't matter if it's an emergency in-network or out of network.< /snip >

Oh yeah, huge issue. I've read so many horror stories - even if the Doc says they have to go NOW, insurance won't pay as they didn't pre-auth.

Regular ambulances too. Basically, none are in an insurance network and they are major hard-nosed about the bill. No negotiations, nothing! And, they'll send an extra guy saying the patient needed EMT supervision - before they even know what the call is! Big upcharge for that.

Had a bill for one once (outrageous charges) and called them. Offered them the medicare rate plus 25% - Nope. Said we'll give you 15% off for cash now or 12 (or 18?) months of payments with no interest. Just for spite, I took the payment option. Make them wait for their money.

As far as regular ambulance rides go, if it's a basic run, it can have two basic EMTs in the rig. If there's an IV established, at minimum, there needs to be an Intermediate/Advanced EMT. If the run involves some other aspect like cardio, it's required to have atleast one paramedic (medic). That's required by law.

Big difference between an EMT-B (basic),EMT-A/EMT-I (advanced/intermediate) and EMT-P (paramedic) not just in skill level, but pay, responsibility, protocols, required continuing education and ability to push drugs.

What happened that makes you bring up Life flights? I like the vertical siding as a hide

Thanks. The wife had a stroke (brain bleed) back in January which resulted in her getting a helicopter ride from the local hospital to OSU in Columbus. Insurance paid a portion which they said was in network. Air Ambulance company says not in network and we're responsible for the remainder of the bill. . . . a large amount of money.

Is your wife ok now?
Nice fix with the siding.
What did you do in regards with the door?

That's scary news about your wife! I hope all ended well? Other than the huge bill, of course.

Nice work on the siding!

The wife is good to go and has been back to work for a few months.

Thanks for the compliment on the siding, its done and looks way better. Now it doesn't catch my eye.

The door will be an interior mounted exterior metal door when the project starts.

We are battling what seems to be non stop **** weather. Rain, cold or wind. Yesterday we got an inch of rain and its raining again today. The 7 month old Maytag washer quit working, I took off half day of work for the repair man. My open trailer is getting new tires and i can't go pick up the block I need to even get started.

One thing after another and we are already half way through May.

Glad to see you are back posting.

Sorry to hear about your wife but it sounds like she is doing well now.

This rain sure is crazy. Just saw that US30 EB was closed between Upper and Bucyrus from a huge washout under the highway. What a mess.

Saw the article on Crawford county now.com but didn't read it. Pretty sad for a ten year old road.

Well, the addition started today. I took a few pictures but the PC in the house doesn't have a SD card slot. That's what happens when you buy a refurb computer. I'll get them loaded up tomorrow before I start digging.

I pulled the vinyl siding off the east side of the garage. This is were the addition is going. I also mowed the grass as I'll be taking the mower deck off and putting the back hoe back on. The short grass will also help with layout and staking.

The original plan was a 12' wide x 18' long addition with 10' side walls. The I decided to make it 28' long, no reason to leave a back corner in grass. When I upped it to 28', I was going to try to match the roof line on the back of the garage. After trying to work it out in my head, I said screw it. It'll all have 10' walls rather than the back 10 feet being ~7' walls which would allow the roof height to tie in correctly. Then I thought about it again, 12' measured on the outside outside of the block, leaves me about 10.5' on the inside. Oh brother here we go again. . . I'd like 12 feet on the inside. So the final mental design calls for 14'W x28'L x10'H.

I'm holding the length short of full garage length. I don't want to mess with a meter base. I'll give up the 2 1/2' not to move any power. However, the plan does call for a 100A sub-panel in the addition. Since the wall between the old/new is going to be separate, it'll actually be a double thick wall. Not wanting to run all the power through the double wall, I decided to run just one conduit to power up the sub panel.

There will be a 36" man door between the sides and a matching 9x8 O/H door. It'll be fully insulated, including the block foundation walls. I will be spray foaming the top and bottom of the wall cavities (more later when I do it) and then adding fiberglass batts. The walls will be 2x6 construction and covered with OSB/plywood internally. Externally, it'll be vinyl siding like the rest of the garage. However, with the current pricing, I may up grade the exterior sheathing to Zip.

The roofing with be shingles to match the current roof and roof sheathing may be foil faced OSB (like the current exterior walls) to assist in cooling the addition.

I'm considering adding to the current duct work from the wood burner. I think it'll create enough heat to warm the added space. Cooling, just might be a mini-split in the future, one reason for the sub panel. The other thought is to move all my metal fab stuff to the back corner, which includes, welders, torches and plasma cutter. The Lincoln tombstone requires a 50A breaker. So it's all future proofing.

I got started yesterday morning and was pulling siding when I remembered to get the camera out.

Fxk8B1p.jpg

It was foggy when I started yesterday and once the Sun broke through the clouds, it got hot real fast. The foil faced OSB reflects the Sun so it's like getting hit from both sides. I took a break, ate lunch, ran to town. Once the Sun had passed a bit, I was back at it.

r2dIExi.jpg

I had 4 different neighbors stop by and talk, one stopped by twice. It held up progress but it's nice to have good neighbors. One of them is a farmer and has a few other things going on. He's rehabbing an old building (bar) and turning it into a new place with a bar and food. He's got it done to a bare interior.

I finished up around 4.
PBb69Hf.jpg

I started to mow when my parents stopped by for a while, I wanted to mow, get the deck off and put the backhoe on. The plan was to start digging today. Well it's raining right now so I'm on a rain delay. Forecast shows, about 25% all day. So I'd guess this day will be a "wash."

It's been drizzling all morning here and moving your way. Can't wait to see the progress on the addition of an already super cool building.

Thanks Alex.

By the looks of the clouds outside, it's going to be like this for a better part of the day. I have a few other things I can do in the garage and make a run to town.

Eric,

Hard to tell from my phone but is that an electric cable/line or something else that you found?

The addition size- have you staked out the “bay” to actually visualize what you want in size?
Can you get this weather tight before the weather changes in your area?

Thanks

It was a section of pipe or conduit. Here it is along with other stuff I have pulled out so far.

That includes the second ground rod I was trying not to hit but snagged it as well.

One of the first things I had to do is move my dump trailer out of the way. That was accomplished with putting the backing mount for the pallet forks on the loader and slipping in a 2 5/16" hitch.

Then I had a ground breaking, gold shovel and all. Well, some gold Rustoleum paint.

Staked out and ready to go.

I guess I know why the front wall would shift a bit in the winter time. The footer/stem wall only goes down 8" in the ground. Good grief, I guess, I'm going to have to some some extra work joining the foundations together.

Where I ended up tonight after a rain delay, getting staked out and typical other stuff going on.

Here's a different angle. You can tell it was starting to get dark out. This camera doesn't do well in low light.

Eric in your free time :eyecrazy: might want to weld up a simple clamp on hitch for the bucket makes it easier to move trailers quickly, it did for me! Stolen image mine lacks the top link connector!

I considered that but had 2 thoughts. Using the pallet forks back plate was as simple as grinding some paint and welding a piece of tube.

The second issue was putting the ball out that far. It would be another 18-24" out from where it is now. That's more tongue weight hanging out there. My JD is just a 1025R, a little guy with not alot of weight for counter balance.

Looking good Eric,

I can't recall but wasn't your place a gas station at one time? Hopfull you won't find an old tank if it was.

Nice footer on the old place.

I know you said you were going to set the new garage back so as not to have move the meter, any consideration into burying that power line? You could bring the power in on the new outside wall of new garage and make that panel where the meter is connected to a sub panel?

That way you could gain back some sq footage. or are you over that?

Yes, a gas station and the tanks were removed back in 1989. The tanks were never registered with BUSTR. I've already checked on it, several years ago.

I considered running power underground but it was just a passing thought. Once the addition is done, I'll be burying a drain tile so that would be in the way of that..... good enough to leave well enough alone.

Got paged into work for a roll over accident so that cut in top my work time and cut short to go eat pizza with daughter and Grandson for his B-day.

I have the majority of it dug along the garage. I found what I'm shooting for as far as depth. I think. You can see where I was cutting it back with a shovel.

bK6y82v.jpg

Good news, where I thought the original footer was, it's deeper. Bad news, only by about 8".

5xqVVY1.jpg

This I have learned. A 12" bucket doesn't dig much and the going is slow. However, it's faster and easier than a shovel.

I'm running out of room for the dirt. After I pile it up from digging, I have to move it. Because I need to get a concrete truck in here, I'm now moving it to the back corner of the yard. Yeah, time consuming but it's better than paying someone.

Eric

At least you made time for pizza for the B-day grandson.

What’s the callback policy for your department? No mutual aide agreements from neighboring departments for station fill ins or larger calls?

Thanks
