Ok I'm glad you're confident. I just saw this pole and the proximity to the road and thought uh oh.

KIMG0574.jpg

I am in land development and typically even though your road cut is only 30' with shoulders or so your ROW or easement width is 60-80' if it's a public ROW. That gives them room for the franchise utilities and power etc. Also, overhead power is typically secured in easements from the centerline of the wire (typ. 10-15' on center) If your building corner is less than 30-40' from the centerline of that road I'd double check before going any further. Without rustling too many feathers with the county that is... :)

But you probably know better than I for your particular area. Respect the hustle on these project man. Good job.

Thanks for the concern. I'm not worried about it and won't lose sleep over it. As the county doesn't require a site plan, sketch or anything else. They just want that $10 fee and the notice so they can reassess and up your taxes.

Once I get the old driveway area filled in and grass growing, it'll look even better like it has been there for years.

Eric,

I just noticed over 35,000 posts, that's awesome. Good for you. You are in the lead!

I think I took the lead over from Kevin a few years back after he went off the air for a short time. I think Sberry is behind me and slowly catching up, but I haven't paid enough attention nor do I really care. ;)

I'm fortunate that I can post at all hours of the day with my work schedule and it also helps for me to moderate the forum. I get to check in daily at multiple times.

That is one of the beautiful things about rural America, the public officials don't need to add constraints on things like buildings. And I get why they have to in the city.

Some people like that big city life, not me. I like it quiet and slow paced. If I need something that our town doesn't offer, 98% of the time I can run to Ontario/Mansfield and grab it with a 20-25 minute drive. If I need to go to Columbus, it's just over an hour or so. I'll take the ocassional drive over the living with the hustle and bustle of the big city. :D

Oh man, this is getting frustrating. No progress.

Saturday- held physical agility test for possible new hires and chopped leaves.

Sunday- Worked my 24hr shift

Monday- 10% chance of rain, rained or misted all day. I did mark the top plate for truss locations

Tuesday- got called in to work OT for the first 12 hours, turned into 13 hours.

Wednesday- 10% chance of rain through 7am, it's raining right now. It's supposed to taper off to 5% chance to 0% until 11pm tonight. I have full faith in this Ohio weather. . . . It's dark outside but I can tell it's completely overcast.

Honestly, I think we have had more rainfall since I laid the block that we had all Summer.

Just wonderful news. 90% for Thursday.

I'm not really a fan of working in the rain, especially a cold rain. .. . on a job that pays nothing.

After a rain delay, I got started with hanging a sheet of Zip sheathing on the back corner. I wanted it up before I started the trusses as it was going to help hold the first truss up.

You can kind of see it beyond the trusses.

attachment.php

First end truss up and I used the JD with the pallet forks to bring them over from the house garage. Got forks, why carry them ?

Same stage of build as the picture above but from the outside where I have been taking pictures.

attachment.php

That's the end truss for the north end sitting inside.

I came into work at 1700 after burning some personal time. I got all the trusses up, by myself as usual. It was slow, and after the second truss, I went back and started to add the hurricane clip to help hold them in place. I figured I could get the trusses up but probably not the sheathing but maybe some bracing.

attachment.php

The last end truss was the worst, well, just because of stuff in the way. . . . and of course because I do stuff by myself.

Rat run in. I need to add another row along the bottom of the top chord and some diagonal bracing.
attachment.php

I'm sure I'll get rained out tomorrow. There's also a 24 hour shift available at work. If no rain or work, the plan is finish sheathing the ends, bracing, sheathing the end of the trusses for the west wall and fascias.

That seems like a decent amount of progress considering you don't have any help. Especially considering everything else going on.

Its coming along nicely. Great that you are getting way more done then what you thought you would a few weeks ago.

You're right. I didn't think I was going to get this far. Now it the rain would cease and desist for a week. It's funny how the wife even mentioned all the rain we've been getting this morning.

I won't be able to work out there today but I think I'll be able to cut a few things out in the garage today while it rains outside. I need some blocking for the fascia. No better time than the present to get it done rather than waste daylight.

In all honesty, I should go get the shingles and soffit supplies today but I wanted to do that tomorrow as it's payday. I generally do all my errand running on payday.

Now if you could only get the JD to lift the plywood, paper and shingles to the roof.....

It would be nice but it won't raise that high. I don't mind carrying the stuff up a ladder, it's training for work.

The OSB will get slid up the ladder and not actually carried up.

I was at work yesterday, no progress. Today there was an OT spot but didn't get to me and with 25 mph winds (gusts of 40) there will be nothing sheathing going up on the trusses today. I'd rather be spending the day at work when I can't get progress made.

Friday, I didn't get any pictures. All the sheathing is on, including the gable ends.

I had to cut a few sections of blocking out between the trusses and get them leveled up. My 22.5" spacers grew a little when I put the trusses up. Consider it just working by myself and trying to hurry to get them up. Done and fixed.

Once all the trusses were plumb, I added another section of rat run bracing on the webbing.

I pulled some more siding, removed a gable style vent and closed it up.

Put up all the blocking for the gable end fascias. This including squeezing my **** through the first trusses and end wall. Not easy with a tool belt on.

I measured, marked and cut all the rafter tails.

Then as the day was winding down, I started to put up the front fascia on the rafter tails. I dropped my new Metabo nailer, It was fine but the quick connect cracked. No big deal, I'll just swap it out. Yeah right, it's a 3/8" NPT fitting. The only tool that I have with a 3/8" fitting. So, put everything away, run to town and grab a 2 pack.

I really wanted to have all the fascia on but ran out of time after that. The plan for today was sheath the roof. If I got it done, add tar paper, and drip edge. If things progresses well, keep moving along with shingles.

I took a bundle to the station yesterday and cut some down for the starter courses. That was an effort to save time. Then they called for rain, but it was going to clear off. It did but now it's too doggone windy.

A day off yesterday and after the rain cleared, it was too windy.

I did do a few little things, finished nailing all the hurricane clips. The started to tape all the sheathing seams with Zip tape. Put it on and then roll it. I had two 90' rolls and used both and needed more.

Since it was the best day out, I took the last sheet of Zip panel OSB back for a return and grabbed another roll of tape. It was dark by the time I got home.

Then hoped to get sheathing on the roof today, nope. I got called in to work OT again. So, another day with no progress.

You can see the fasicas are up as I finished the gable ends this morning. Once it was up, it was time to start sheathing the roof.

First row up. You can also see the Zip tape I added the other day when it was windy.

A different view from the road. You can see where I ran out of Zip tape. I took the left over sheet back to Lowes and bought another roll of tape. I'm going to try to finish that tomorrow. . . . after the shingles go on.

attachment.php

Sheathed and tar papered. I have to admit, this is the absolute worst tar papering job I have ever done. It seemed like every time I got it straight, it'd go crooked again. Tomorrow, you (hopefully) won't be able to see the tar paper.
attachment.php

I tried to put down the peel & stick shingle starter but it had an issue. It wasn't sticky. So it'll go back first thing in the morning. I'll grab a different brand and another box of roofing nails. I don't think I'll have enough. The neighbor brought a partial box over but I'd rather buy my own box. I also need another section of drip edge. I think I forgot to add in the top edge.

Good progress for the day. Just to orientate myself again, where is the outside room with the compressor and shovels, rakes etc?

And how are you going to tie in and finish the opposite end between the chimney and the highest point of the addition. Im not sure what to call the junction.

I got the shingles on yesterday after a nice surprise. I went back to Menard's returned the peel-n-stick shingle starter strip I bought that didn't stick. I also picked up another box of roofing nails. Granted the neighbor brought over a partial box but I didn't want to use all his nails.

Then I made a trip down to HD and grabbed a new roll of Peel-n-stick starter strip. I wanted a different brand and went this time with GAF. I went back home, drug everything out, ladder, air hoses, bucket of nails, tool belt and roof nailer. I put the starter strip down, and got out the already cut starter shingles to get the first few courses going.

Bang bang bang, all on and begin with some full shingles. 3 shingles in, my roof nailer dies. I go in, take it apart. Same darn thing as my framing nailer, the piston stop has come apart. So, put everything away, go back top Menard's and buy a new roof nailer.

Came home and put down the "just under" 5 square of shingles. I still need to do some finish work and flashing.

Looking towards the back.

Towards the front. You can also see where I need to flash the gap too.

This will be the back side wall. I have to put step flashing in here then move to the gap between the old and new.

attachment.php

Once again, I'm here at work. I got called to work another shift but taking the first 10 hours off tomorrow from my shift.

The plan for Friday is flash the area above the roof to the old garage.

Then glue down a section of shingles over that to hide the flashing.

Add some step flashing on the old roof, tape the flashing joint to the wall.

Close up the gap and RTV a piece of J-channel in.

Zip tape the rest of the walls.

Then chop leaves as I haven't been able to between work, rain, and OT.

Looks great Eric! I bet you are relieved that it is all closed in and no matter what the weather or how little daylight is left, you can still get something done inside. ;)

What is the plan for the backside of the upper wall? Going to just paint it or do some siding?

The compressor is inside the back room, but not outside. Directly to the west of that back room is where I added the shed onto. Thats where the shovels, rakes and junk is. It's only accessible from the outside

When I added that shed on, I put the roof over the low sloped back room roof. I actually gained some overhead storage when I did that.

Where the step down is in the wall, the roof to the right is covers the back room and shed.
attachment.php

The tie in, did that last picture with the step flashing answer that ?

Still waiting on the overhead door. It should be in last part of the month, I hope. Proabably hang a blue tarp until then.

I'll probably move some stone for an approach in the next couple of days. Then I can atleast stick the pallet forks in there. Not sure if I want to leave the back hoe in there without a door.

The upper wall will get siding. I'm pretty what I took off will do the upper roof, the back and the front. I'll have to order a box ( I think it's 2 squares) for the east wall.

Going to have record breaking warm weather here in Ohio! So great time to work on it and finish it up, on the outside.

Yeah, sounds great but I worked OT yesterday. I'm off today 0700-1700 and go back for the rest of my shift till 0700.

I believe I'll be working again tomorrow, another 24 hour shift. Sunday rolls around and more than likely, I could be there again for another 24 hour shift.

Monday is back to my duty day.

Makes it really hard to get something done. :dunno:

Work can really get in the way of life sometimes! The addition looks great. I sympathize with the dead nail guns. I also am at that point that I am wearing out older tools, and needing to replace them. I suspect it comes with being long term DIYers.

Roof flashing. DONE

Glue down shingles. DONE

Step-flashing and tape. DONE

Close up the gap. DONE, no J-Channel though.

Zip tape walls. DONE. Need a bit more to finish around the O/H door.

Chop leaves. DONE. That was supposed to be last but I figured I needed to get it done while it was calm out before the wind picked up. 2 1/2 hours worth.

Both of those Porter-Cable guns were bought within weeks of each other back in '04. I guess if one dies, they were a married couple with the other following suit.

They served their purpose and should be easily rebuilt with some new parts. I just didn't have time to hunt, run down or wait on parts.

Eric. The addition looks good. Just think where you stood 2-3 weeks ago debating if you were going to shut down the winter and here it’s almost weathertight!

That’s a lot more than I would have got done but you have a lot more experience than me after following your projects and builds for several years.

I really don't have alot of experience. I've just picked up pointers here and there. Alot of TOH on PBS, Hometime, Mike Holmes, Property Brothers, Scott Mcgrillvray, Matt Panella, Matt Risinger, Kyle @ RR Buildings and guys here at GJ.

Just watch and learn.

Hopefully Soffit will go up tomorrow. That is of course I'm not still here at the fire station.

Today I got my exercise. I made countless trips up and down the ladders putting up the F-channel and soffit.

I'm planning on wrapping the fascias tomorrow.
