Very cool... you're making great progress!

Glad to see your weather is cooperating. Looks like our winter is setting in more than a month early... ughhh

...D

We had that little cold spell and I thought my project was a goner. How was I to know we would be having some 70° days in November ?

I spent some time the other day trimming out the front inside corner of the garage. I put up outside corners and in the back corner of the garage, about 40 (seemed like it) trips up and down the ladder.

The next day after doing a few other things, started putting siding on the back of the garage. I'm trying to pull out the shorter older sections and fill the space with full length pieces. Trying to make it look right with the old siding. I know there will be some color difference with fading, but it is what it is.

attachment.php

After a few other things yesterday, (payday, errands and calling hours) I went out and adding some more siding to this back wall. It's now above the roof line of the back garage. I'll have to work off the extension ladder to finish this. It's almost too small to put on the ladder jacks and plank.

Once this end wall is down, I can finish the back inside above the roof line.

In running errands yesterday, I made a trip to Menard's knowing the 11% sale was going to end. I decided that I'm going to need atleast one box to do the side of the garage. I'm not sure how I will have left from the stockpile of new/old siding but the side is 10'x28" and makes it 280 sq ft.

I figured I might was well order the siding I needed as the 11% was going on and it might take a week or two to get the siding. So I ordered, 2 boxes, which is 4 square of siding. It should give me some extra for the future or if I make a few mistakes.

Low and behold, I check my email this morning. Menard's has sent an email. My special order siding is in. Less that 24 hours later. Fortunately, It appears that we have a distribution center/mill/metal plant in Ohio.

Only problem, got called for OT again this morning, going to be here at station till morning. 48 hours of bliss.

I don't know if your siding came from here, but Menard's has a huge distribution complex in Holiday City, Ohio. I've driven past it a few times heading East out of Northern Indiana:

Yep, that's the one I was referring too. My siding must have been stockpiled there. When I ordered metal for the house garage ceiling, it came from there. I believe their truss factory is there as well.

I was told they haul all the scrap wood back there and burn it for heat. Whether it's has a steam plant or not, I don't know.

Eric, the garage is coming along very nicely.
You got quite a bit done which is awesome.

I've tried to get a bunch done but it just seems so chaotic trying to get stuff done. I was planning on having the back and upper section above the roof done Saturday but a 6am phone prevented that.

So much for the warm weather. You should still get it all done before winter, right?

I hope so. I'll try to toss up a photo this morning to show where the siding is currently at.

I need to pick up some limbs out of the yard this morning due to the weather yesterday. Hopefully I didn't lose anything off the garage, like shingles or siding. I also need to put away the rockers on the front porch and porch swing. That stuff could probably wait till it gets dark and use daylight for the garage work.

Picking up the granddaughter from school tomorrow will cut Tuesday short.

End wall is done and it's lunch time.

I spot some time trying to get the first piece above the roof line in place. Since I don't do this on a regular basis, I spent more time than I would have liked on the first piece, including making a second that fit better.

Once I finish this section, I can move around front. That'll be progress that people can actually see.

so its practice on the side and back and get good at it then due the work out front to show off your awesome skills!

I have tried that approach and then run out of the nice long material to finish off the front show side! made for another trip to the store to get boards to finish up the project as well. or you end up with a bunch of short pieces you could have used on the back side to finish it off.

nice progress your making though!

Awesome skills ? LOL, you must have me confused with somebody else.

Fortunately, I'm using the old siding. It's already cut various lengths from when it was previously installed. Some I'm trying to be careful and pick out the correct piece for the least amount of waster.

Other than above the door, it's going to all be short pieces, like 24" and 40" pieces.

I finished the back wall and above the roof yesterday. Kinda of a long view shot with the phone. I wanted to see how well the siding was matching together. That took way longer than I wanted but the multiple trips up/down the ladder and cutting one piece at a time consumed some day light.

attachment.php

I did make my way around front. I started working the course up the 3 short sections. I'd like to rip off the old siding and put them in as full pieces but working around the meter base and conduit isn't going to be easy. After I stopped for the night, Bones decided to do some inspection and QA work. He approved.

attachment.php

Today I went out, moved the siding that I was using out of the garage addition, to the nice warm garage. It was 34° out this morning. I was good but the siding wasn't.

The J-channel around the meter base, took a slight hit with the hammer and the end result was a piece about 4 inches long and 1/8" wide broke off. Fortunately, it's on the inside edge where it can't really be seen. I tried to pull another piece down and allow the piece underneath to click in, it cracked.

So, I made the decision to stop working on the old section. I continued up the front two edges of the addition with some snow flakes falling. Once I got to the last piece before the O/H door, I stopped. I didn't want to end up cracking the J trim around the door.

It'll be nicer tomorrow and 45°. I'll try to get the rest done.

Looks like you have your dog trained to bring you the siding pieces.

Actually, that is a piece of 2x6 about 16" long. He thinks it's a toy and it was what I was using around back under the foot of the ladder to level it out.

He thinks anything is a toy. I brought some firewood home today and he was carting that off into the yard. I gave him my empty Dr Pepper bottle for entertainment. 2 minutes later when the cap was off, he was done with it. It doesn't make noise like a crackling water bottle does.

Bones was just anxious to get the ladder set up on the front side of the garage.

Hopefully the temperature warms up enough for the materials. I know it’s expensive replacing broken pieces and time Consuming installing the replacement.

Incoming warmer weather towards the end of the week should be perfect for doing some siding. Assuming it works out with your work schedule.

Loving everything about this upgrade. Nice work!

Thanks. Looking at your build, you know the issues of working with an old building.

Going to be a bit nicer today and hopefully even better tomorrow. However, tomorrow with have 20+ mph winds.

Bones, that crazy dog doesn't need a ladder. . . .

It does, but Friday, I have to help a friend tear off the front half of his shop roof. It has been put off but is leaking bad. It's going down to the sheathing, new sheathing and metal siding.

As I was finishing up the other day, I spotted these gable vents that I meant to install. I'll be waiting till next year when it gets warm out and the siding is flexible enough to manipulate easily to put them in. Since the garage won't be getting insulation or a ceiling right away, it'll help hold some of the heat in.

attachment.php

I stopped here the other day as it was too cold to go much farther. I was afraid the siding was going to crack more on the short inside wall. I got a few other things done instead.

I finished up the front gable end. The first piece of siding I went to put up over the door opening cracked. I thought great, I know how this day is going to start. Fortunately, It was about the 2nd worst thing that happened today.

attachment.php

As the day progressed, I knew I couldn't work till dark. I was on personal time until 1700. . . or atleast I thought. Well, I screwed up, this was the last of my personal time and I was supposed to be in at the station at 1300. I realized this about 45 minutes late. I made a phone, worked things out and changed it to an entire day of vacation. Yeah, I screwed the pooch on my scheduling.

So after that small fiasco, I kept plugging away and got the front done. When I did the inside wall around and above the meter base/conduit, it took some wiggling. I had to trim a few pieces back. Granted, it's not perfect but for trying to work around this stuff and not pulling all of the siding off, it'll be okay.

I still had some daylight left and about a square of siding, new in the box. I decided to make a go at it and got it all up on the east wall. I have to go to Menard's tomorrow and pick up the 2 boxes that I special ordered. I wish the trim coil was in as well so I could grab it all in one trip.

I’ve decide to not only have my regular shifts on my cell phone calendar but also keep a running list of appointments in the note section. One page and I can see everything. Remove it after the event. This includes OT I have accepted. I did the same thing you did until someone called for a welfare check on me.

Garage progress is going well and hopefully the weather cooperates with your schedule.

I have my duty days (every 3rd day) on the calendar of my phone. I honestly can't remember having a problem till today in 20+ years.

However, between all the O/T I have worked in the past couple of months, rain delays, garage work days till dark and just trying to keep pace with everything, I lost track.

Honestly, I should have gotten a write-up for incident. When I talked to the acting chief, he laughing asked if I wanted to use some of my comp time. Everyone in the dept knows, that I am maxed out and won't use it till I go on drop or sell back at retirement. Thankfully, the other lieutenant working my spot had no issue staying for the rest of the shift.

Tomorrow is supposed to have winds of 23 mph. If they come out of the west, I'm good. I'll be on the leeward side.

Glad you didn't get in trouble! Sounds like you owe the other lieutenant working in your spot at least a six pack of beer! Friday and Saturday are supposed to be decent weather. That is going to be so nice when you get it done!

He's good with working the OT spot. He just got promoted to Lieutenant and is enjoying the pay raise . Having his knowledge and experience, he should be a Capt IMHO. He was happy to boost his pension.

Maybe I'll buy him a cigar.

Glad you mentioned the DROP. I have 15 months and 11 days before I leave.

But whose counting?

The siding looks great from here. How much coil stock is needed to complete all the exterior work? Will you wait for the door install prior to wrapping the garage opening?

The guy who worked the rest of my shift has about 23 days till he can retire but will go on DROP.

Me ? Tomorrow is the 20th, I have 22 months and I could go. Less if I buy more military time.

I still have a partial roll left, like 8' something full width. I think, off the top of my head, if I lay it out correctly, I can get everything wrapped with the little bit I have and a new roll.

I'll wrap the door while I'm waiting on the door to arrive. It's got another week or two before it comes in.

So this evening while I was cleaning up. Trying to pick up all the scrap pieces of siding and cut offs so I can put them in the dump trailer tomorrow. . . which is at a friend's shop. We are doing his roof tear off tomorrow so I want that stuff in the dump trailer.

A guy in a nice GM/Chevy diesel pick up and 12-14 enclosed trailer pull into my drive way. I thought the guy looked familiar. He introduced himself and it was who I thought it was. He owns a local siding company, they do doors, windows and roofs to. I think he has branched off into general small residential remodeling/construction.

I thought this was going to be a sales pitch, you know first impressions. I was wrong. He's also pastor at a small church. He proceeds to tell me that he has driven by several times a weeks, sometimes twice a day for 25 years. We've been here for twenty and counting. He's watched my progress over the years and knows what the place looked like when we started.

Since I have started this addition, he has been by every day, seen me work, and doing it myself, with exception of the concrete work. He just wanted to say thought I was doing a nice job and that I was a hard worker. He commented on the house, front porch like many have but when he saw the garage addition, he said he thought "that guy is going to make it look like it's always been there." He told me, I did it right.

We talked for about 15 minutes. He chuckled when he saw me put on the Zip sheathing. When I taped it, he said, this guy is "****" and I laughed. He asked how big the addition was and why I didn't do it as a pole bldg. He was inquisitive about the build.

I know many guys here have made some nice compliments as have friends and family. There's been a few around the area, give me a thumbs up (ODOT mowing crew) and strangers say it looks nice. But when a local guy with a business like his stops and pays you a compliment, I'll take that one to heart, no offense to anybody else.

Got a few things done today. Nothing major as the ground was still muddy from the recent rain.

Hung one of those legendary blue garage doors.

attachment.php

Then went inside and put up a few temp lights. I want to get a cheap extension cord to use for power that I can leave out there until I get the power up and going.

attachment.php

Then went back inside and made an attic access cover. 22"x32" with 6 layers of R5 polyiso insulation. I used a piece of the Zip sheathing. In lieu of painting it, I cut a piece of white aluminum trailer siding left over from my enclosed trailer project. It's through bolted with some 3/8" carriage bolts.

I spent the morning doing a similar thing for my parents and the attic access cover for their new building. I went over and grabbed it and cut out the foam and through bolted theirs. However their cover I made from 1/2" BC plywood and painted it white to match the ceiling. Then I was the good son and helped get the Christmas decorations out of the attic. :D

As I was building mine, I was thinking about the discussion I had with my buddy today about insulating my ceiling. I was considering using polyiso between the bottom chord of the trusses. Spray foam the edges and put in unfaced fiberglass R19. Then blanket either R11 or R13 on top of that.

So I'm pricing the material from Menards and notice, either faced or unfaced R19 in the rolls that I would buy have a volume pricing discount. The 14 rolls I need for the walls are about $490. The unfaced 5 rolls I need for the ceiling are about $169.

However, if I buy 20 rolls of the R19 faced, I get volume pricing and it's about $490, the same as just the ceiling. It'll be like getting the ceiling insulation for free. But with Turkey Day coming, I'll probably have to go get it tomorrow, especially if I want to take advantage of the last 11% sale.
