Shelving is looking good. I do like your set up for painting them in the upright position. did you hold a piece of cardboard behind the racking while spray painting to keep overspray off your newly painted walls?

looks like maybe you didn't bleed either when you nicked yourself and that takes real skills (probably still hurt a bit though).

keep at it and you'll be putting stuff on those racks very soon!!

Thanks.

I used a piece of the leftover 3/4 foam as a back blocker.

It didn't bleed much, I put a band-aid and electrical tape on it right away to keep the flying grinding mess out of it. It felt really good when I hopped in the shower later.

The rest of the racks will be getting assembled today, that's the plan. I have to go in to work at 1700, so I'm off the first 10 hours. I grabbed a sheet of 3/4" plywood yesterday for one shelf.

Interlake vs Teardrop pallet racking. This isn't as easy as I was told.

These are the beams, see the round pegs. I was told they just need some grinding to take the edge off.

attachment.php

I did that along with opening the hole up on the upright so the peg would fit. I used the 4.5" grinder and cut off wheel.

Then I found out the measurement from the peg to the inside of the beam was different. This caused the beam to cant at an angle. So I opened the hole up more.

attachment.php

Then I ground open the hole to the safety pin to fit. Then the next issue. . . the holes in the upright had a different spacing.

attachment.php

To temp solve this issue, 1" of spacing is needed. Right now, it's 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood stacked. The future will be a steel block of some kind.

Is there room to drill it and add a Grade 8 bolt?

there is the rub about used pallet jack beams. ask me why I have more than a few extra ones. it's not a one size fits all sort of racking which can be frustrating.

i hope you figure it out which it seems like you have.

Even though they seem be locked in I did add a 5/16" grade 5 bolt in each connection. Once loaded, most of the force should be downward. I'm not going to be constantly loading/unloading like in a warehouse so it should be ok.

I believe once I get it all set up, I will bolt the two sections of racking together. I figure that they will be perpendicular to each other, along with close to the ceiling that they can't fall over.

Add in the fact that they are second hand, or 3rd, possibly 4th hand and just to put plainly, used, contributes to the whole scheme of things.

I'm thinking in the long run or if I had to do it over again, I would take a serious look at buying new. Nothing bent, twisted, rusty, scratched paint, mismatched paint.

buy once, cry once.

I hear you there and if I wasn't retired and had more time than money that might have been my thought too.

I hear you on most of the weight putting weight downward and if you are not loading and unloading a lot bolting each side is a but much so i've used heavy duty ZIP TIES if I didn't think bolting was necessary for every beam that has worked great for me.

good luck!!

So I did a few things the other day when I was off a partial day. Mocked up the height to make sure the tool box would fit. Moving a box without any drawers is real easy.

attachment.php

It appears somewhat high but I'm tall enough to use it. It will also allow my torches and new welder to roll underneath this shelf.

attachment.php

I bought a sheet of plywood to use a bench top. That was my plan today was do a final on the pallet racking. But I just got called in to work the rest of the shift.

I spent some yesterday and today working outside on the garage and area around it. It was finally dry enough for me to work the dirt and move some.

attachment.php

It still needs some work.

I got a load of stone and filled in another area that will get concrete later this Spring. We'll see what the weather does and when I can pour the pad.

attachment.php

I didn't go hog wild with the stone as most of it will come out when the pad gets formed up. What comes out will get spread on the driveway.

attachment.php

I hauled a second load of rick rock to go around for the perimeter of the building. Once I had most of it in place, I put a load of dirt at the base of it to keep it in place. Then it started to rain. Atleast the rock will get washed off and look better. Once it dries up again, I'll move more dirt. I'm probably going to have to get some top soil before I put down any grass seed. There's too much clay in my opinion.

Good idea on the 2x4 block under the lights. I think that I will do that in my new shop addition with 18' high ceilings. I want to do a metal roof also. Fantastic thread!

Garage is looking good! I been thinking about pallet racks and your info has given me things to look for when buying used. Would it be easier to just drop the coins on new one, yea sure. but man they take a hit to the wallet for what a hobby/DIY would use it for in the garage.

Thanks. Keeping the lights a slight bit off the ceiling helps to allow the ballast, if you have one, to stay cool.

The outside is looking good, nice job with the siding.

Thanks.

Thanks for the compliment.

As far as the pallet racking goes, just keep a constant eye out for it. There are places that sell used. Some is "used" harder than others. Yeah big hit on the wallet but it would be nice to buy and be done.

Apparently there must have been a server issue last night for a short time. I was trying to make an update but ended up logging off and put my laptop away.

So I have moved more dirt trying to level it out and let it dry up as I go.

attachment.php

From the back.

attachment.php

This is what I still have left.

attachment.php

I 'm working to level the dirt out evenly and make a smooth transition. I'll probably get a bunch of top soil to do out front so the grass grows nice.

On the inside, the pallet racking is up. The extra beams are stacked on one of the top shelves out of the way. I also bolted the 2 sections together to make it more rigid, which it did.

Then I set about laying out the shelf that will double as a bench top.

attachment.php

You can see better that I used a combination of 2x4s and 2x6s. I made a dado cut so the plywood top will only be 3/4" off the beam. The step down in the beam is full thickness so the 2x's lose no strength in the end cuts.

Then is was to the top. 3/4" plywood will be fine. I also screwed a 2x4 to the front edge.

attachment.php

Then it needed a coat of black paint to match.

Sunday was the the oldest daughter's birthday so we took them all out to eat. She wanted Wokano, Japanese steak house, not my favorite but it was for her. I told them for my birthday, I simply want to go grab a pizza. My youngest tells me that I picked the most expensive pizza in town. I laughed and said it my choice (my B-day) and I'd probably be paying for it. Sheesh, kids these days.. . .

So to make the trip worthwhile, I picked up a new set of speakers for the addition. Polk Audio T15 speakers from Best Buy $80.

It could be worse. My kids, 25 and 21, think they know everything and have no problem telling me that I am wrong. Millennials!

Fortunately my two daughters know what this means. . .

FKB

Father knows best.

They used to think I was being a goofball when I said it but as they have gotten older, they have realized that dear old Dad is smarter than what they thought.

However, they do roll their eyes when they get a text from me like this. . .

Dad is great, he gave us _________.

I let them fill in the blank and they know what the answer is.

Eric,

Will the new addition have enough of an over bang to keep the weather off the garage door? And which direction does side Alpha ( front) face?

The shelves look good after all the work you did to them.

The speakers will be fed from the receiver in the other end? Will they be on all the time or can you isolate them if your not out there?

Alpha side faces North. We get primary wind/weather out of the West. So having the setback will help but not when the NW weather rolls in.

The speakers will get tied into the speakers in the garage. It'll play through out the garage with no real way to isolate. It's just me so it's fine. To run new wire, I'd have to venture back across the attic where the duct work. . . . no thanks.

Thanks for the compliments. Black almost looks too dark but all other benches in the garage are black so it followed suit.

Picture from the back makes your garage look nice and symmetrical.

racking and new workbench looks good too.

as much as I'd like to buy new racking with all my experience now buying used racking i'll probably still buy used if i need any cause I kinda know what to look for and I can walk away from little bends or wrong pins or damage.

keep up the great work!!

So after working Thursday, Friday was payday and that required some running to get stuff done. A trip to Menard's to pick up a few more plumbing pieces for the airline, which I hoped to work on Saturday.

The item I needed and wanted to get was some top soil. The local landscape place wasn't going to have any till atleast nest week so I went with some bags. I wanted forty 40lb bags @ $1.50/bag. The lady tells me there's 50 to a pallet, give the pallet and I also grabbed a bag of grass seed. I tell her I'm going to go home and get my dump trailer and will be back. I go home, hook up trailer, load up the dog for a ride to town. Then I find out there's not 50 bags to a skid. I go in pay difference and get the pallet loaded. Unloaded at home so I can put trailer away.

Hoped to get it down Saturday but got called for a shift of OT. So I've been at work since 0700 Saturday and won't be leaving till 0700 Monday morning. So the plan for tomorrow is getting top soil and grass seed down out front before April showers start.

I did get a couple of things moved into the addition. This is my $25 desk I bought from a Gordman's store that was going out of business. I brought over one of my other shop stools to sit at.

I did start with getting airline through the wall. I needed to go through the double wall and was thinking to myself, I have this covered. I have this long bit.

attachment.php

Yeah, this is it.

attachment.php

It wasn't long enough. . . so what next. How about a spade bit. . . oh yeah, the extension for the impact driver bits.

attachment.php

Worked like a charm. Sometimes, you buy a tool and know at one point, you will use it.

Been doing some outside work the last few days. Here's my off loaded stack of top soil. 65 bags in all.

Out front where I planned on putting it all.

Since all the top soil was down, I added grass seed and went back over it with a rake to get a light covering over it.

attachment.php

The side yard I had got more top soil from the old dirt pile where the squirrels planted black walnut trees. Since I had a decent start there, I used the rest of the bagged top soil to get the side done. All seeded and ready for rain.

attachment.php

Yesterday, I added a tile to hopefully take care of some ponding issues. Once the tile was in, yep, used the back hoe on the John Deere, I filled in the trench with some river rock to allow the water to flow into the tile better. Then I followed up with getting more dirt down, leveled off and ready for top soil. Since I was out, I went back and bought 20 more bags . . . . which wasn't enough. I went back and got another 30. This got close to the remaining pile of dirt. I finished it off by seeding and raking it in.

attachment.php

Now I'm ready for some rain, which probably won't fall.

That’s a lot of bags to be moving around the yard. Did you at least keep the bay door closed to the JD so it couldn’t see you doing all that work?

I’m tired just thinking about moving all the bags of top soil.

When you work OT, are you working as the OIC or working the vacant spot as a FF or apparatus driver? I’m sure you rules are different with a much smaller department than mine.

Depends what the vacancy is. Sometimes, as OIC or just filling a spot.

Awesome score on the service writers desk!

Thanks. I would have preferred to have one with the cabinet at the bottom but at the price, I was happy.

I wanted to upload a few pics last night but Spectrum was cooperating with providing a stable 'net connection. Wind and misty rain always seems to create an issue here. None the less, I'm hoping today is better.

As in recent posts, you can see where I tee'd into the airline. This along with the wall will need painted. Some addition caulking around the OSB needs to happen first.

attachment.php

Coming through the wall, there is another tee. One side goes right to a drop and the left to an air reel and another drop.

Made some stand offs out of some 3/4" pine. Got a coat of white paint and the primed the metal straps to hold the air line.

attachment.php

Air line just hanging in the air till the paint on the stand offs dried.

attachment.php

I cleaned the black pipe off with some lacquer thinner. What they cover this stuff with I don't know but it's some nasty stuff. Once it's all hung up, it'll get painted orange like the rest of the air lines in the garage.
