This is for all members interested to answer. Before joining this site, how many were content with their garage, but after joining decided to do some remodeling whether minor or major?

I was going back through the "Let's see your workbench" thread and noticed the garages from some members from before and later postings where things have changed.
So it got me to wondering how much of an influance this site has on people. I know that I have got all kinds of ideas. Hopefully someday I can implement them the way I want.

Same here, My garage / workshop has had a complete overhaul, its more like a show room now, where as before it looked like a multiple car crash in a hardware store,

This site has influenced me a lot.

I had absolutely no idea there was so much out there you could do with your garage. I've gotten a lot of ideas, but unfortunately, I have very little money to work with. All I've been able to do is put in an attic ladder and some attic storage. Doing that has allowed me to put both vehicles in the garage, which I count as a major accomplishment. Got some outside projects going right now, which take priority over the garage, but as soon as those are done, I can get into building a workbench and storage shelving. I'll open a 'My garage' thread then.

If not for this site i probably woud never have thought to install a lift in my garage.
When i built my garage i was just happy not to have to change oil lying on my back in the gravel driveway.

I found the site because I am always improving my shop in one way or another.

Only thing different now is I've got a lot more people to copy ideas from.

I got my shop before finding this site, and I have had ideas of what I wanted.
But since being on here I have found great information & ideas to better my thought process.
Very well thought out ideas and planning have been shown on this site to aid in my goals as well as many others.

I found this site looking for ideas on how to jack up the garage so I could add on. Now, thanks to everyone here, I have way more ideas and wants than I have money. Oh yeah, my wife says thanks.....but I don't think she means it! Lol

My new shop was already rough planned, and the project started when I joined GJ, but reading the forums here has had a major influence on all of my decisions about how to complete it.
I have learned a few things here that I wish I had known or thought of prior to designing my building, too.

PS I doubt I will ever be completely done.

I began searching because I had a need to improve my garage and work area. I found this site because of that need but GJ has opened up all sorts of ideas that I would not even thought of if it wasn't for GJ. My Project List has been complete shuffled.
Thanks GJ!

Great topic Kevin,

I have tried to get thing s somewhat set up , you all know we are never really done. Every week I add an item to the to do list due to the forum. The truly wonderful ideas for folks that enjoy and use their garages is never ending. I would say 25% of the direction in my build was influenced by the forum..

I came here looking for ideas for my cabinet project... now I have several new projects I want to do. I even brought up the idea of "frenching" my motorcycle lift into the floor the other night at dinner. (A roll of the eyes is not a NO. Right?) Thanks Jack!

obviously I was never content with my garage before, I bought a disaster that I knew needed improvement.

The only thing that has changed is that I didn't know I needed a fridge in the garage :)

Mine was on its way already but I got a lot of good ideas here. The garage is in a constant state of evolution. I don't know it will ever really be finished.

I thought I was something having my garage drywalled, but then joined up here! Now I feel inferior and will upgrade when the opportunity is available.
Better lighting, cool paint on the walls, something on the floor, etc...

Not only my garage has changed. My way of talking has been influenced too.

Is there a Quote of the Day thread yet?

There were things that I had planned on doing to my garage before I joined here. I think what the site has done is made me document more of what I have done.

This place has put a fire under my **** to get things done and for a few tool purchases like some Channellock tools. It has also made me more aware of "made in china" and I'll leave that as is.

i'd have to say this forum once again sparked an interest in tools.

i've been a "pro" wrench for over 25 years,
repaired, modified and cutomized my own junk since '76 when i bought my 1st car, and was always taking something off a bicycle to put on another one long before that.

i had pretty much stopped buying tools for work about 15 years ago, aside from an occasional impulse buy.
i started building up tools to keep in the garage, that motivated me to do a little more, and venture into bigger projects.

most of my hand tool purchases are used tools, flea mkts, swap meets, and pawn shops. slowly added on more power tools or my s-10 blazer off road project, and added some homeowner DIY wood working stuff.

the torture never stops :lol_hitti

my garage is , what it is, a small, cramped, dimly lit space, i had planned on building a new larger space in back of the old garage, and demolishing the old one,
probably wont happen now
and dumping money into a space thats too small to start with dont make much sense to me. i make do with what i have

I joined when I bought my new (to me) house. I had a decent 3r before, but the new shop blew it away. I came looking fo ideas and tips. I definately learn form the info on here, wether it's new ideas, solutions to problems, or asthetics. My most recent addition to the shop is a Lazboy and corvette wheel side table. This is before the glass top but you get the idea.

Are you kidding me?!! Do you realize how much this site has cost me. I found so much **** i didn't know I needed until one of you pointed it out to me.

I guess this is a round about way of saying thanks.

This is a very interesting question. I don't work daily in a garage environment. I had about 35 years of garage hobbiest experience (off road racing, restoration & fabrication) before joining GJ. I've always taken my hobbies seriously and tried to approach them in a professional way. The garage itself has always been a hobby - something you need and are constantly working on so you can get the things done more efficiently.

I've enjoyed the opinions of a lot of people on here and the written and photographic examples of garages and projects they have provided. In the last 5 years I have added a few things to my garage that I never thought I would. Those would be a TV, fridge and computer. I consider a computer to be a tool but together they have allowed me to relax and spend more time in my garage. It's become an essential room in the house and as I tell my wife and kids ... "freed up more space for them." :)
