Hey guys, been trolling this site and am just starting a remodel/renovation/upgrade to my detached garage. I am in the progress of finding old pictures of my detached garage, and will take some more. Love the site!
A view looking towards the double garage door.

Shortly after I moved in. The guy before me LOVED pegboard. All but maybe 16 feet of the walls were covered in pegboard, orange, brown, and white...HAD to get rid of it. And thats what Im working on now.

I will post updates as quickly as I can. Not much of a budget so dont expect to much to soon.

That is what we call as having potential. Take plenty of pix as you start. It will be fun in a year to look back and see how you started and what plans you thought you were going to do in there. Be aware that your plans will change as you surf here more and more, but that is OK, bucause the plans will keep getting better.

Welcome to GJ!

BTW, post some stats on the size of your place - size, height, etc...

Lots of potential in that space. Let us know your plans so we can poke and prod before the work starts. ...Great fun, spending other's money!

Welcome.

Thanks guys!

Yeah I have changed so much in my head already by browsing this site! Almost overwhelming!

I am still trying to get some old pictures from and old phone on here. Already started on some of it but I will post some other pictures of the progress. Anticipating the prodding and suggestions by all!

Here are the other pictures I was looking for.

The garage If I can remember correctly is 20X40 roughly. 9' ceilings. 2 car wide garage door.
Here is the house from the outside from the listing when I bought it 2 years ago.

Here it is after about 6 months. before I decided to start to remodel it.

A modest sized house to protect the family, a nice sized lot to keep the neighbors at arms length, and TWO garages to protect the toys.

I love it!

Has anyone put all recessed lighting in their garage? I know I will spend a bit on the can lights and the lights going in them. Can you get adequet lighting from recessed lights? Or am I better off keeping the 8 footers in the garage?

Depends how much of a masochist you are. :)

I roughed in 8 x 4" recessed cans in a 16' row today, and I'm intending to fill them with 8 x 575 lumen LED Cree Cr4 lights. There will be another matching row on the other side of the shop, which still leaves me wondering what I'm going to do for the open middle of the shop (which is about 22x20 overall).

It's going to be fairly expensive to go all-LED, and fluorescent would certainly be way cheaper. But maybe I'm a masochist.

Using non-LED recessed lights, you would either have to deal with crappy CFLs or heat-generating halogens. Neither are particularly attractive. I suppose you could use plain 65-watt incandescents as well, but then you'll have heat AND short lifespan to worry about, all while being pretty dim.

Fluorescent tubes are the way to go, on paper. And I'm still not going to do it. I'll let you know in a few days how the LED approach works.

Im willing to put in the time and money to make it look good...if it will look good. Do you have any pictures of what you have done with the lights in your garage?

Here's six of the eight recessed fixtures, just before I did all the left-to-right alignment. I've since aligned them and have started wiring them up. Should have actual light maybe tomorrow or Sunday.

I used the 6" version of the Cree lights (the CR6 model) in our kitchen remodel. I was sufficiently impressed with them and the quality of light that they produce that I decided to use them in the workshop. The big obstacle is that you generally need a lot of light in a workshop, so I'm looking at in excess of 25 individual lights by the time I'm done with it.

Since the 4" and 6" Cree lights produce the same number of lumens, I'm using the 4" version so that I can cram more of them into the ceiling.

You will definately have to let me know how they turn out. Thats what I would like to do, put on two seperate switches, so you can turn on half the lights, and then the other half with another switch, incase you dont need all that light. But I like you said you will need better lighting in the shop and having the ability to flip another switch and get that light would be nice.

Looks like you are spacing them around 2 feet apart, and then every other ceiling bay?

They're on 24" centers, but then it gets complicated. Those are being roughed into a soffit I've framed in. On the left, the ceiling will open up and follow the roofline. On the right against the wall, there's going to be a suspended shelf hanging from the rafter ties, just below the soffit. So really, I'll just have this one row on this side of the shop, and then a matching row on the other side of the shop. I'll have more lights along the front edge (roughly where I'm standing when I took that picture) but the open middle (where the ceiling rises) is still a big question mark. I can hang some fluorescent fixtures in there if I have to, but I'm still looking for alternate solutions.

There's a veritable revolution going on right now with LED lighting. A couple companies have figured out how to make very good, very bright lights for an almost reasonable amount of money. Since LED lights lend themselves to new and innovative form factors, I'm sure I'll find a solution for the center of the shop.

Eventually. ;)

Well been working hard!

Forgot to take some pictures but got one wall done, got some mud up on it and started painting. Paint and Primer in one is NOT the way to go for new drywall. Always get new drywall primer!

Wow, didnt realize this one was so blurry! ( I will work to get the quality better!)

I take that back, I did take another picture...so heres a clearer one! Very cluttered. Being "winter" here snow can come at anytime and do not like the idea of the stuff being outside So moved what I could into the attached garage but didnt realize I own so mjuch stuff! Lots off shuffling **** to get one side done and then move it back to work on the other side...once the walls are done and painted it will become easier.
