I have a Craftsman 3-button remote with opener that I purchased about 5 years ago that operates a door on my existing garage. I've installed a second garage door on the backside of the garage that I need to buy an opener for. The Craftsman opener that I was considering also has a 3 button remote but it runs on a different frequency from my original remote.

I would like to operate both doors from a single remote and eventually operate a third door from the same remote when I get the openers for my new detached garage. I know of an adapter that Sears sells, but the total cost will be about half what a new garage door opener sells for. I might as well replace my old opener. Anyone have any better solutions?

Also, do different manufacturers have different frequencies for their openers, or is it standardized throughout the industry?

I had much the same issue when I put a new opener into our detached garage. There was no opener in there previously. The previous owner had installed an older Liftmaster in the house garage and I wanted them both on the same remote. Same issue though, the old opener and the new use different remotes/frequencies.

The installer just put a new board into my old opener. I think it only cost about $75 installed. It solved the problem.

If it is a Craftsman it is most likely a Chamberlain.
The little folder that comes with their replacement remotes does a good job of listing brands and models that the remote will work with.
Write down what you have and then check out a remote at the store.
There was a radio band change a few years ago. Nothing to do with brands. Everybody had to shift.
If your existing unit pre dates that shift you may be out of luck.
But it wouldn’t hurt to check with Sears or Chamberlain. They may have a radio update kit.

You can get an external 315 mhz reciever from Sears or Chamberlin and connect it to you old opener, Then you'll be able to program your new remotes to the old opener.
Problem solved.
