Hello good folks! First post, so here goes. So like all good adventures it started with, Hey neighbor can you give me a hand? My neighbor asked if I would help him tear down a garage. I was all game and went to look. After quick assessment and measurement I suggested we move this fine structure to my property just 1000 feet away. With a very low budget in mind and the use of as much reclaimed or locally sourced material as possible we rescued a 70 year old crooked little shack from being torn down. I always enjoy taking something that is a bit of a lost cause and turning it into something that can give a sense of pride.

Wow, I was skeptical when I saw the first photos. Though "how could it possibly be worth restoring", but it looks great at the end, definitely a garage to be proud of.

Very nice work, you should be proud.

Being from Michigan myself and never hearing of Menominee before I had to look it up on the map. Wow, I guess that is technically Michigan, but just barely.

Salvaged the stamped tin ceiling literally out of a roll off dumpster. It was roofing on a 125 year old house that was being reroofed. I love the stamped fish scale look that was meant to replicate the cedar shacks of the day. I really like the craftsman style buildings and made this design for rafters tails patterned after a Hudson Bay axe I have.

Holy moly !!!!

What a transformation !!!!! You took something most would have torn down and turned it into the most wonderful building I've seen in a long time. How long did it take to get it all fixed up ?

I work full time on second shift and worked on rehabbing the garage in my spare time over the winter. Took about 6 months total , I have about 200 hours or so of time in it. Was a very satisfying project. Could have been a lot less if I used new plywood and poured a concrete floor and all that boring stuff! ha I wanted a wood floor and found rough sawn air dryed Red Pine from local sawmill. Gave me a good excuse to buy a thickness planer :) Also used all used 1 inch pine boards and ran them through the planer to freshen them up and just put a chamfer on the edges and butted them together to give a tongue and groove look. Cedar shakes were salvaged from roof of a 100 year old Church. I bought them 2 years before moving the garage for $20 and had them "In Stock" waiting for a good use :)

Very nice indeed! Didn't expect much after seeing the first pictures but wow what a transformation!!! Very nice you used 'used' materials to finish it as well, you can't get that warm feeling you got with new materials.
Superb entry of the 'journal' :).

Excellent job and I really like your Austin Healey Sprite too. I had one of those, a 1970 Mk4 British Racing Green, when it was 8 or 9 years old. Yours would appear to be the much nicer Mk2 1962-64, or thereabouts??

Saved from the clutches of death, and restored to be better in every way possible. Many kudos to you for this terrific accomplishment!

My daughter in Massachusetts has what i believe is 1920's "prefab kit"garage sourced from Sears or Montgomery Wards. It was built in sections and bolted together on the slab. It needs a "JOB" like you've done.
You've done a super job!

Sprite is a 1962, makes the 12 x 18 garage look big! ha Building is set on a bed of crushed limestone with treated 2x10 runners laid flat 3' on center down the length of building and then two 2x10s spiked together to form a large L shape for the main perimeter of garage. Saved a couple of the rough Red Pine boards for a work bench, left the bark on for the beauty of it :)

Thank you all for the very kind comments and questions. I am overwhelmed by the positive words. I know there are many amazing garage rescues that have been done and are ongoing that make my efforts look very underwhelming. I did this for myself and I wanted a certain look and I did it in a way I that thought was best. I could have done more and spent a lot more money and had a building that the next guy that owns it would maybe appreciate more. When it comes to restoring cars or old buildings I say F#@%, they next guy . Do it the way you want it. Thank you all!

If the next owner(s) have little or no appreciation for what you've done to that building, it will be their loss every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I think you should frame a photo collage of the transformation, and permanently screw-mount it to the wall!

I love it!! That floor looks fantastic!

I put a wood floor in my 12x20' garage this winter as well, looked about the same condition as your shop when you started. You'll love it, but I'm sure you know that already. Gorgeous walls, and lovely work on the exterior finishes as well.

Very cool, nice work!! I love when something that would normally be demolished is made into something to be admired.

The stories behind the buildings are what make them great.

Thanks for the suggestion to mount a photo collage to the wall. I will do just that! I am proud of this little building of small stature and I do appreciate the history of stuff. So maybe someday the "next guy" will raise a cold one when he is out in his cozy little garage and salute the old fool that saved that building.

So this is a different building than the other shop you’ve posted here recently?

May post a link to show your work off in both threads. Members usually post that under their comments/ reply section.

We moved the garage first week of Demeber of 2017, had a lot if work to get site prepped before ground all froze up. I remember the first weekend of February the low temps were below zero with highs in single digits. But it was sunny and I had lots to do. I worked all day long both days getting shingles tore off and replacing rotten boards. My girlfriend and neighbors would stop by a couple of times and ask if I was nuts. They said there is no big rush to have to work like a man possessed. But the air was so crisp, so pure and clean I truly was enjoying myself. My Grandfather would walk away from his home with his team of horses, leave behind his wife and children on December 1st every year to go logging in the North Woods of Upper Michigan and return in the spring. Me working on that garage was child play.
