I would like to insulate my garage. The walls are insulated and dry walled. The ceiling is not insulated. The garage is not heated or cooled. What kinf of insulation to use. Is it OK to use the unfaced insulation (i.e. without vapor barrier)?

Thanks:)

Home Depot here in MI has 15" wide by 24 foot long unfaced rolls of R-30 fiberglass insulation on sale for $9 and change, a pretty good deal!

Yes, you are supposed to have a vapor barrier, especially if you heat building. I know of people that didn't though.... :dunno:

Its a lot nicer, cleaner job if you get the type with the paper backing. Staple it up to the rafters and your done. I think with the non-backing stuff don't you have to run wire or string to hold it up?

Why not blow in insulation? Its relatively inexpensive and will take much less time to get the R value you're looking for.

I used unfaced R20 insulation batts. I can't recall the last time I saw faced insulation available here. I have a 6mm vapour barrier on all walls and the ceiling of my garage.

Do you have a drywall ceiling or not? I did a LOT of blown in insulation and it made one heck of a difference in comfort in the garage.

I put 6'' bat insulation up under the rafters, used paper faced insulation, stapled to rafters, then I put up blue tarps over insulation, staple to rafters, been there 8 + years still looks good.
