Overpaid for a pair of these and spent the weekend shining the girl bikeup. They are in amazing shape and should be fun to cruise...

Thats ironic. I just paid too much for a Wards Hawthorne Women's bike yesterday. Mine is in dire need of a complete resto. But it was just way too cool to pass up. It's 98% complete. I haven't done much research yet. But I couldn't find many like it online. It is the skip-tooth sprocket and has what I believe a planetary gear box inside the rear hub to change gears.

Edit: I found this pic online. Mines just rustier

Well that bike is the bees knees. I wouldn't be able to pass that one up either. Great score..

Here is the pair I got.. His and hers and the boys bike is in much better shape. I haven't got at it yet but I'll probably take a stab at it this weekend. They are both single speed bikes that just look cool in my garage.. It was worth the money just to tinker around with them...My wife thinks I'm nuts

Those are good old bikes. Heavy as heck but they'll work forever. :) It looks like someone exchanged the handlebars on the boys bike at some point, the girls bike handlebars look correct for a Schwinn of that vintage.

"...gee Wally, that's a pretty neat bike!" (some of our younger viewers may not get this reference)

nice finds. both are about mid to late 70s from what I can see from the pix. unless some parts have been replaced of course. the ladies bike has no reflectors on the pedals so I may be earlier 70s.
I bet both of those bikes have a serial # on the headtube just below and to the left of the headbadge. if not its on the left drop out(where the rear axle mounts) a simple google search will tell ya the month and year these bikes were made.
made back when Schwinn was still made in the USA(Chicago).

be careful. bikes are cool and relatively cheap(compared to cars and motorcycles) but they can become addictive:beer:

Sat - my wife would be thrilled if all I dragged home was a pair of bikes to tinker with! :spit:

I had a Typhoon in the same color (anyone know how to match that) ! I loved it. I put "high rise" handle bars on it to hold my newspaper bag and heavy duty tires for riding in the snow (Yes, you can ride a bike on hard pack snow ! Trickier on glare ice !!) I must have broken 3-4 goosenecks, at least the same number of pedal sets and at least one crank (1 pieces cast; some how (?!) the pedal cross threaded the crank !) I used Vaseline to lube the bearings !
