The logo is a bit obscured but i'm going with pre 1880s for that anvil. If other members on here don't chime in by the weekend, i could figure out a fairly exact date of manufacture by the logo.

your PW is newer than 1880's to i think 1920's range. I had them memorized at one time, but that is close. with the England stamp on it under the Patent under the Peter Wright name is where the dates are figured out from.

i had this one that is close to yours in size and age that one of my clients is using to make Steampunk type lighting. pictures attached

It looks like it might have about a 3 or 4 inch crack on the edge alongside the hardy hole. does it or is that just the picture? any other cracks, welds or issues that you see or know of?

also did you drop an inch round steel ball on it from about 6 inches above it onto the face and see if it bounces up about that far?

just don't used any pounding on it with cold steel because anvils are for heated metal. cold steel you should pound on an old piece of RR track.

good find

You quintuple ****!
From practical machinist
"Hundredweight =112 lbs.
Second position is 1/4 of hundredweight.
Third position is straight Lbs."

So your 1 1 9 should be 112 + 28 + 9 or 149 pounds.

Hop2it,

Where did you find the sale? Advertised online or just a garage sale you found in your travels?

I went to a couple sales in the area this weekend. I need to know the circumstances of how I missed the anvil. Oh, the pain!

Great score, btw.

I was driving home from taking the dogs for a walk in the woods and saw the sign and knowing the area that there was 2 houses on the street 1 was a repair garage owner that closed about 1972or 73.it was his daughter and son in law that had the sale.I just arrived at the right time.

I noticed a lot of areas not finished off as nice as I would have liked but they are underneath.the spot by the hardy hole looks solid and tight, I haven't found a steer ball to try the bounce test yet.I will post some pictures.

is that a crack or just a score mark from having been around for 100 years? it's pretty heavy so not everybody can move those correctly and somewhere along those years somebody might have dropped it.

if you do drop a steel ball on it i'm guessing you will hear a very nice ring and not a thud.

Just an FYI. some of the old anvils popping up were in fires and have no rebound left in them so always check that part along with welds, cracks and rough spots. most of the users will like a perfectly flat surface on top and edges too if possible, but a few nicks might be sanded or even milled off.

good score and rewards for getting a little exercise and walking your furry friend. I gotta know how you carried that anvil the rest of the way home or did you buy a hand truck too?
