Garage shelves using 2x4 as brackets

I saw the design at https://woodgears.ca/shelves/garage.html#google_vignette and really liked that there is no front support making it cleaner.

1 change to simplify I thought I would check with this forum -- Instead of the 1x4 sandwiching a 2x2, I was wondering if I could just attach a 2x4 (vertical) at a 90 degree to the stud with pocket screws and just leave at that.

It would act like how metal brackets work, and the wood perpendicular to each other would take the weight, with the pocket screws (1 on each face) keeping it in place.

Would that be too weak of a join?

If I understand your plan, you want to mount the 2x4 horizontally directly to the vertical with pocket screws like a **** joint? The pull out on those pocket screws won't come close to the shear in Mathias's original design. If you are storing packing peanuts it won't matter. If you have materials of substance to store you will likely be disappointed.

For LIGHT storage on bare (no insulation, no drywall or plywood) walls, I just screwed some short (about 12") horizontal 2x4s in to the studs.

It's not going to support any appreciable amount of weight. You need some kind of gussets or their functional analog.

I built some just like those (the link). Much easier to get lumber on and off the shelves. But there's no way it would work without the plywood or other gussets.
You can get some pretty heavy duty shelf brackets that would work, but they are expensive.
