Garage shelving going out the window

Took a trip to my local Menards (Like a Home Depot, I live in Wisconsin) I was going to add a shelf to my existing Xtreme shelving setup and realized they have swapped out this brand for a cheaper one instore, Performax. I can still order online and free ship to store option, but I feel like the public is getting scammed by having the thinner/cheaper units instore and can not compare the durability of the Xtreme brand units. I like being able to go to a store and be able to inspect the items. I hate that we are becoming an online commerce world!!

I actually just found the Performax stuff this weekend. Is the Extreme stuff that much better? Do you have any pics of yours?
I will try to get some pics tomorrow as we will be going to a concert tonight. Not to say that the weight capacity is much different between the two products, which you can see on the Menards website. Also not much of a fan of the black wrinkle finish on the Performax shelving. Another option I have and like is the lighter duty shelving with the "keyhole" or "skull" looking holes. I think the adjustment is every 1.5" - 2". Will also send ya some pics of that. I had to buy more upright pieces from a local supply warehouse like Granger or one that is off South Town Drive in Madison, WI.

They're not scamming anyone, someone did the math and realized that they are more likely to sell more units of the cheaper stuff and make a higher profit doing it - it's what the general public wants. For those who want something higher quality, those individuals (such as you and I and the rest of GJ) will seek it out and we are not their target market for the store display.

I just build my own out of 1/2" plywood and some 2x2 (shelf supports) and 2x3 (verticals) dimensional lumber. It fits the space exactly, it's stronger, and it is lower cost.

I think there may have been one person that did the movable garage storage out of wood with the black bins that have the yellow tops. Then in less than a month.....BANG !! ALL over the social media pages and everyone doing their own video like they made and designed it themselves. LOL

It is a great idea and using dimensional lumber, you can get an exact fit like you did! When I finished my basement I actually designed the storage room around two smaller metal shelves I had.

I noticed that too a few weeks ago, it's very disappointing. I bought a ton of it for a few different places, it was great prosumer grade shelving but the ugly tan color sucked. I wonder if they sold all the cool accessories, like desk, drawers, cabinets, that went with it.

The heavier, boxed shelves have gone up quite a bit in price, glad I did most of my buying a few years ago.

Not sure if they still have the accessories for the Extreme Garage shelving as I can not find it on the Menards website. I do not mind the tan color, since most of the shelving 15 years ago you had the choices of Tan, Beige or possibly a very light gray.

I did find this in my search though. It is a company in Australia. Looks like a great idea if you have the room.

I wish I would have bitten the bullet and did the 2x4x8 steel shelving ... I’ve built 4 sets of lumber shelving units vs buying once (work pays for moves so no issues moving the weight).

Menards

It's still on their website, ship to store.
that is why I was upset and posted this thread. They removed the Extreme line from the stores and replaced with the Performax. We were also referring to the accessories for the Extreme Garage shelving. They had cabinet doors, peg board, a drawer and a few other add-ons for the shelving. When you do the initial search on the Menards page there is an image of a shelf unit with the cabinet doors.

Consumer grade shelving is garbage.
Usually you can find some cantilever supermarket shelving
that is really meant to hold serious weight and last a lifetime.
I have a bunch of it in use and a bunch in storage.

I see people here are complaining about the color of their shelving.
If that is the case, and that is a problem, we will never be friends
for misplaced priority differences.

Great idea with the supermarket shelving.

My problem is I have high ceilings and want to utilize all of the wall space I have, so I need 96" high shelving units, which are difficult to find. The best bet I've found so far is Global Industries; they have all of the sizes and configurations that I need (besides the added height, I need non-standard depths and widths).

Their prices aren't too bad for what I need, but the killer is the shipping costs, which adds about another 40% to the price. Their closest distribution facility is 6 hours away in Las Vegas; if I knew that the shipping cartons would fit into the back of my Flex I would consider making the drive to save some coin.

I bit the bullet today. Looked at some other options in person, and for the money and the given spaces I want to install it, Performax looked to be my best option. I want 2 shelves above my toolbox, and to remove my existing 3x8 work bench. I've got another area I'd like a couple more shelves above where I store my engines on engine stands. Went with a 96x96 30" deep with the "bottom" shelf to be at around 6 feet with the upper at 96 by the toolbox. For the engine storage area, I grabbed 2 72x96 sections, with the bottom shelf at around 54" to be tall enough to push a fully dressed engine on a stand under it. It was actually cheaper for 2 72" sections than a 96 and a 48, while occupying the same space. Also found it to be cheaper to go with the wire decking over plywood which I found odd.

Picking up my new to me 56" Matco toolbox in the morning, so I'll start getting it all set up tomorrow afternoon. New LED lights are supposed to be here tomorrow too.

Most of my shelving is DumpsterMax brand shelves.
The color is variable but the price is low.
I have a color modification tool
called a bucket of paint.
The height is variable too,
but I have a stanchion stretching machine
called a welder.
