Are there any heavy duty 42" wide shelving options out there? I'd like to move my tool box to the other corner of my garage and put some shelving where it's at now, eliminating the totes in the process. I've got a space 42" wide and 47" deep where the tool box is sitting now.

My other option is to pick up something like this and putting everything along the right side of the garage wall.

I did get a real bakers rack. Sunbeam Bread Rack, 42" square x 6' tall with 12 plastic trays. I cut 1/8" and 1/4" inserts to lay on top of the ventilated trays to spread the load. This rack was galvanized and collapsible, I welded up the hinging points and made a fine corner unit out of a $10.00 auction win.

The baker's rack are available in the size I'm looking for, but I don't think that they are going to be heavy duty enough.

I'm looking to store a couple of sets of Jack stands, some heavy specialty tools in blow molded cases, cases of oil, charcoal, etc.

Why not just build your own? Will generally be cheaper and can fit it to exactly the space you have and the items you want to store.

2 x 4s. 1/2 inch plywood, box of 3 inch deck screws. and a skill saw
Cut and screw to size
(Paint all the wood white on all 4 sides before you cut it.)

I could stack a couple of these. Building is starting to look like the better option to utilize the space best. I could build something 42" wide x 36" deep.

Does anyone have any recommendations on steel shelving supplies? Home Depot has some stuff from storage solutions. Not sure if it's heavy enough for my uses. Looks like it's mostly 16ga with 14 ga 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" posts.IMG_20191230_150704_MP.jpegScreenshot_20191230-163838.jpeg

You'd be surprised how much weight those shelves can hold. The boxed one in your picture above shows it's rated to hold 1,000 pounds PER SHELF. I know you don't have that much stuff you're putting on this, at lease not from your description of your use for it.

OP if you get the red one pictured (i have one) just get 4 heavy duty casters and make a rolling wood base to set it on. I used two 8 foot 2x4's i had laying around cut to length and two 2X8 pieces for the width then use carriage bolts to bolt through the 2x4's, 2x8's and the heavy duty casters. (hint: cut the 2x4's long enough to set the rack in between the carriage bolts or counter sink them.)

M6: so are you talking 42 inches wide or deep? that first shelving unit you posted i've had several before I changed over to pallet racking. i'd buy 2 sets at Costco and make about a 20 foot wide shelving unit out of the two boxes that would be 24 inches deep.

pallet rack shelving comes in several widths and I think they start at 24 and go up to 48 inches deep. I usually find that at auctions or on Craigslist for about the same price as the new shelving that is smaller and doesn't hold as much weight.

The shelves in the set up i'm posting a picture of will hold about 500-1000 pounds per shelf if I recall correctly, but i'd stay under 500 to be safer.

are you just trying to put one car in the garage or two?

ALL: another option some members are happy with is making shelving out of unistrut steel instead or wood/plywood cause they can also customize it to their needs and may like the metal look better.

Have you considered overhead shelving like these SafeRacks? They can be had in the 4’x8’ or smaller and are available at different hanging heights. For your reference this is a 9’ ceiling with the racks hanging 24” down. 72113fcbb83cf413056f51f9d495d2d2.jpg783b83e110e289f5908ea3ade095b6a0.jpg

I love the fact I can walk under them and are using space that would honestly be wasted.

I'm going to look into the overhead stuff for additional storage.

I ended up picking up one of those 36x18 Muscle racks and it cleaned out my totes. It seems sturdy enough for my purposes at this time.
