First I am new to this forum, so I hope this is the right discussion board to put this on. My wife is driving me crazy about a shoe rack for the garage. Can you guys post some pictures for me if you have them of what you have done in your garage's? I just want somrthing that looks half way nice and that can hold some shoes. Thanks for all of your help!!!

I hate shoe racks! They look terrible, and the shoes just get dirty if you work in the garage.

I hung a cabinet next to the door in the garage (no pics, sorry). We put our shoes in the cabinet. They stay clean, out of sight, and off of the floor. I put an air-freshener inside .

Here is the one I used:

I have one for shoes, and a second above it for general storage (trash bags, light bulbs, paper plates, etc...). They are about 4-feet off of the ground, so our stroller sits below on one side, and the recycling bins sit below on the other.

Wait a minute, back up the truck. You tell your wife to keep her girlie shoes in the house, not in the mancave. You can leave your work boots in the garage but thats it. You make her a rack inside the house for her.

Read the fineprint on the back of your mancard. It clearly states no girlie shoes allowed in the garage. If the girl wants some loving in the shop, the clothes can come off, but the highheels stay on and should be pointed up, towards the ceiling. Welcome to the GJ by the way. I'm glad we can help you.

The OP never said the rack was for her shoes. ;)

There's probably five to six pairs of shoes/boots sitting in a pile outside the door to the house in my garage, including a pair of muck boots that the wife wears when she's outside helping me. I can see where a rack in the garage would be helpful.

When I bought my first house, the first thing I did in the garage whas to remove the shoe rack. It always seemed likea strange place to keep something you want to keep clean. Glad i get to keep my man card.

Is mancard one word or two?

man card or mancard?

My door to the house opens into the utility room. Shoes/boots are stored there.

I say let her put her shoes in the garage. She'll move them pretty soon after I crank up the table saw with the exhaust pointed at them (covered in sawdust).

Ventilated shelving cut to length on shelf standards/brackets with firmly attached shelf on top for setting things when loading/unloading, taking shoes off/on, putting jacket on, etc. Worth it's weight in gold!

Oh, there are a couple pairs of "muckboots" still on the floor because they're usually, well, mucky. :~)

Can we check with your wife about that statement?

no way would i allow chick shoes in my garage. we do have motorcycle boots, mtn bike shoes, and snowboarding boots in the garage cabinets, but it's not a chick shoe storage facility. that's for under the bed or closet door.

I wanted a shoe rack that didn't take up a lot of space, so this is what I came up with. There is a mud room bench just inside the door, so far this rack has worked well.

I built my stair landing big enough for a 30 wide base cabinet that I installed wire shelves in. It holds about 16 pair hidden away. I'm not home to take a pic...sorry. It's hard to see in this old picture(and the actual cabinet wasn't there yet) but the landing has a nook to the left of the door to the house. The other door goes direct to the basement.

Get a new wife !

What is a wife doing telling you what to put in your garage !

My wife fully understands the rules which were not agreed to by force, it just common sense, I don't tell her what shade of Chartreuse to paint the living room and she does not tell me what goes in my garage.

She has never once asked (well she has but did not expect a answer) what to do in the house or where to move things or what color to paint, she did expect me to do the painting and/or moving of furniture but never asked for my opinion. And in return for her having her house, she never tells me my garage is dirty, needs something, etc. yet she helped me paint the walls/ceiling. Its HER house, MY garage, our yard since we do talk about things there like where to put the pizza oven.

Oh and today is 32 wonderful years with her (about 35 years if you count dating years) so it works well for us.

I built a cubby and wall mounted it near the door. Its out of the way, off the ground, and tidies things up. Half the shoes are mine. Steel toed boots, some beat up slip-ons that i wear when washing the car, and some old sneakers that are stained green from mowing the lawn..for uh...mowing the lawn :).

Those stairs are a perfect candidate for hidden shoe drawers.

Aren't you afraid of a brown recluse or something crawling into your shoes being in the garage an all. I guess I'm too much of a *****, I wouldn't keep in shoes in my garage.

 Nice design. Can you share some more of the details? Dimensions? Material?

Since I just used left over scraps from other projects, the overall dimension was determinted by the scraps. I used plywood for the back, ripped up a 1" x 12" for the front, bottom and sides. 1/4" plywood for the dividers. I used biscuits to join the sides, front and back togther. Just cut a rabbit in the sides and back for the bottom.

I used the boots I was going to store there to get the dimensions of the compartments. Added an inch to the width of both boots and about an inch to the depth where the front of the stand would hold the boot.

Down here we have Black Widow spiders, so I do check out my boots thoroughly before putting them on.l
