I have a carpenter's pencil sharpener in the drawer with the pencils. I have come to dislike carpenter's pencils and use mechanical now. So what is the big deal with carpenter's pencils anyways? What is the benefit of using them over a regular pencil?

I use pencils for writing on paper. For marking out metals I either use a Sharpie or soapstone. Sharpies you sharpen by buying a new one, and soapstone I sharpen with a stationary belt grinder, a very useful tool around a shop.

I do like wooden pencils, though, and awhile ago I decided to try to find a decent sharpener. OMG. They are really really hard to find now! I eventually located and bought one of the old school ones like are pictured in this thread. They need to have two cutting heads, don't even think about trying to live with just one.

Carpenters pencils are great if you are doing carpentry. Big enough lead to make decent marks on rough sawn timber with reasonable durability, and critically not round so it doesnt roll off the roof joist you are installing.

Carpenter''s pencils are designed to be sharpened not to a point, but to a flat wide tip like a chisel or marking knife. If you use them for drawing lines against a straight edge, you keep flipping them and they are self sharpening for a long while. A pencil sharpened to a point will quickly wear down, but a carpenter's pencil properly sharpened will draw a fine line all day.

Very few people sharpen or use them correctly. they aren't for drawing or writing, they are for framing and layout. They can be very precise for what they are designed to do.

I use a .50 cent carpenter's pencil sharpener for my carpenter's pencils and mechanical pencils for anything else. I quit using pencil sharpeners years ago...LOL!

Exactly the same here [emoji106]

This is the one from my Grandpa's basement. The most recent patent on it is 1921. It even has an oil port for the crank:

I also have a box of these pointers, with replacement abrasive cups and point cleaners. I'd be happy to trade a pointer/cup/cleaner for a drafting pencil & some leads of the roughly the same vintage:

I can't remember how many years ago I bought this one, but I am sure it was used then, because I probably got it at a garage sale.

I have been moving it from house to house for 25 years now.

It has one more move in its future, to my new shop!

I have the same one. Originally bought it on ebay for my wife to take to school because her kids kept breaking other ones.

When she switched schools, the new school provided heavier duty sharpeners, so it came home and now lives in the shop.

If you are looking for a decent electric pencil sharpener, the old Panasonic Auto Stop is IDEAL. THEE perfect sharpening angle. Stopped exactly when the pencil was sharp. Reliable. (NOT pretty, though). Best electric pencil sharpener I've ever seen.

Have to agree, Panasonic is my choice as well. I have a couple of Boston KS electrics and one works (the other's motor jammed or died) but not as well as the Panasonic.

I got an XActo manual sharpener but it puts a much larger included angle on the pencil and the lead is so razor sharp it almost breaks instantly. So I'm not a big fan of that either.

I feel like I am the only one who doesn’t have a pencil sharpener in the garage or basement. I guess because I only do auto repair and nothing else so I don’t need pencils lol.

I have a cheap hand held plastic one but the first pic brought back a memory from grade school (circa 1950 or so). A classmate was challenged to put his finger in the sharpener mounted on the window sill. He moved the front size wheel and stuck his finger in and turned the crank. Put neat spiral cuts on his finger. Our nun was not too happy with him.

Elementary school nostalgia. A recent purchase at a thrift shop for less than $1. Taking it apart, the rotating blades were covered/ obscured with a brown solid coating. Closer inspection revealed it was crayon. Who doesn’t remember trying to sharpen a crayon or two in the school sharpener?745b4873ec47e45fb478d162527e10b0.jpg4f810eb79909dd59ad196f6bb037104c.jpg
Now where to mount it?

I simply use whatever little one my gf had in the junk drawer. Spent an hour sharpening all pencils then put them out in the garage in a jar above the bench. She’s been quipping about the junk drawers so I emptying them out slowly.
