Garage Size Advice Needed

I am getting an estimate from a contractor for building a new home with attached garage but unsure if the garage size will be functional. Currently, the plan is to have a 30' x 36' garage attached. I know this is good size, but will it fit average size cars (3 or more?), etc? It will be out in the country with no zoning. House size doesn't matter. Thanks

Depends what you are doing with the attached garage. If it is just for holding cars then 30 feet is deep. 36 feet wide should be OK. What vehicles are you planning to store? What else are you planning to use this space for? Storage? Work bench? Need more information, but it is truly subjective and depends on how tight or spacious you would like it and can afford.

I would go ahead and do it 40 wide so you can put 2 16 ft wide doors. Also how tall are the ceilings? Regular 8ft ceilings with 7ft doors or are you going 12 ft ceilings so you can put a lift in one day?

Well, it will just be for storing cars. My guess is there will be three in there but this is my concern-if i went just a bit larger, would four fit without everything being bunched up? I would hate to build it and then realize i should have gone 2 feet wider/longer, for example.

I have a 36'x40' building. I've housed 6 cars. And still had room to tinker. It would hold 8 but that leave no room for anything else.

3 would be your max. 30' deep is not enough to put two cars end to end unless they are really small cars. For purely car parking, I would go shallower and wider.24 x 45 would be the same square footage and park 4 cars easily.

My garage is 32' wide X 36' deep with two standard size one car overhead doors. I can get up to 4 vehicle into mine, but would not leave a lot of working room. For you it all depends about what your plans are, at a minimum try to go with at lest a 12 foot ceiling height.

As far as your garage size, later we all wish that we had built it larger.

mine is 36 x 45 and I can get 8 cars in no problem and have a 2 post lift so could get 9 if I tried. But with all the other toys the space goes quickly. I also have a loft above half of it for storage and access to 2nd fl of house.

Go BIG! Take your vehicles and park them beside each other in an open area and stake out the size you think you want for your shop... Then think about having cabinets on the walls, a work bench, and leave enough room to walk around.

Depends if you have 1970 Lincolns and crew cab duallies or are into Prius and Honda Fit sized cars.

My old garages are 32' deep. and can fit 2 Fox body Mustangs or a short bed pickup with snow plow and John Deere Skid steer nose to tail, but there isn't room to work when things are packed that tight..

36' deep would be preferred.

Unless the house is "Estate Sized", a garage like you are planning is a loser when (or if) you have to sell.

A detached shop would look better and have a broader resale market appeal, at least in my opinion.

mine is 30x40deep.

I have 3 cars in the back and one up front, and room for another.

Plus a mill and a bunch of other tools. Check out my build. But dont do what my P/O did, a single door on the 30 wide side. But thats the way the property allowed it.

Go bigger than you think you need.

36' might be borderline short for three cars. Mine is 38" wide interior and it is a tight fit to swing the car door in the first stall open and still have room to get out. It was really tough when our boys were babies and in car seats.

I think 36' could be fine if you have no interior walls dividing the space. Just make sure you have a few feet between the first garage door and the interior wall of the house.

Spend the money to go big or put in a couple of 4 post lifts. Store four cars in the space of two and have room for working. Add the ceiling height to stack two cars comfortably.

I built a 30x40 about 6 years ago, 10 foot walls, finished, insulated, attic storage, etc. I have 3 "hobby" cars & a few motorcycles plus tools, benches, etc and the first thing I figured out was that I started running out of room when I began tearing one of the cars down for restoration. Made it difficult to keep things organized. I'd go bigger if you can squeeze it in the budget. you can always forgo any finishing touches now to get the bigger space and add the niceties later if up-front cost of the extra space is an issue. I sold my house & shop earlier this year & I plan to go 40x60 on my next one.

Mine is 31' wide. Cars are a little tight. 12' wide per car I think would be reasonable but we don't have large cars. I'd say go 38' wide but once you get to that width then as someone mentioned you are only a couple of feet short of doing a 4 car.

Do a 4 car at 48' and invite us all over.

Just keep in mind if you have entry steps going into your house and/or steps going into the basement they will take up some room also. Mine is 28 deep and 30 wide and with the steps and fridge, freezer, and storage cabinets. my garage is too full! I also have 2 full size vehicles and to many kids toys in there.

The thought of not building because you won't get your money out of it if you sell, screw that. There are plenty of guys that will spend the money for your property. Enjoy the space now and don't worry about the return of your dollar. IMO.......Ill never get the money out of my '65 Impala, but I'll be dead by then so, as I said....enjoy it.

I've never hear a guy say he wishes he went with a smaller garage!!! Go as big as you can, I would say. My version of the perfect garage would be buying an empty car dealer lot, maybe thats just me though.

I agree with this, except 44' or 48', not 45' or any other measurement indivisible by 4.
