Garage size beside a house

Hi,
We are currently trying to plan a garage at our house. We are trying to see pictures to see what a 12 foot and 14 foot garage look like beside or behind a house as we don't want it too seem too big in comparison to the house. If anyone has pictures they would be appreciated. Thanks

12’ walls. 8/12 roof 40x50. Shop floor level is 15-18” higher than the house garage so the detached is only a foot or two lower than the house.

I'm in Ireland, same as the OP.

No planning permission (construction permits) is normally needed for a garage under 25 sq. m./ 269 sq. ft. (iirc), providing a certain %age (iirc, some thing like minimum 50%) of garden remains after the garage is built. Ridge height must not exceed 4 m/13 ft.

All the planning consultants I saw (I had to as I was going bigger than 25 sq. m.)(but 1st consultation is often free!), recommended I should build 'as big as I could afford - you can never have too much space'. 12ft x 14 ft is very tight if you intend working on any vehicles, this needs careful consideration...

Of course if OP lives in an urban area in Ireland, I can appreciate his likely predicament re size of garage vs size of house (btdt).

Start looking around for some barns or carriage houses.
Around here I have a few barns that were made into carriage houses when cars began.
I went with that theme. Or trying to. The size of my garage is almost the size of the house next to it. So I figured I’d make it look like it was there all along.
Lots of details like you would see on a barn or carriage house from Victorian/colonial house era.
Everyone gets used to it pretty quickly if it’s not an eyesore

12 feet wide, or 12 feet tall? Attached or stand alone? Our attached garage is 16' wide, but I dropped the roof line a couple feet lower than the house, and moved the front of it back a couple feet. I'll find a pic if you're interested.

Sorry, yeah I live in rural Ireland.
Probably thinking about 30x45x14 or 30x45x12 size garage. Just my other half is worried about the height being too high in comparison to the house as it is a dormer house. Thanks everyone so far

12 is OK for working on cars and SUVs on a lift. If you might need to work on a taller truck 14 would be nice. But if that is not often you can get away w/ 12 and do some bending or squatting. Another option to get a lower exterior look w/ more interior height is go 10 or 12 walls and use scissor or vaulted trusses. You can use these over just one bay and do the rest w/ standard or storage trusses.

A friend took this drone pic a few years ago. We added the building to the upper right first and the one on the upper left layer. Each is 2400 square feet and the house is 3200 square feet plus the semi-detached garage. We don’t have any restrictions although some neighbors complain any time a steel building goes up. You can barely see ours from the road but complaining Karens are a fact of life nowadays.

Meh.. If they do that, we'd just attach a breezeway.
But good advice in general is to make sure you're clear of all permitting before spending a lot of money on something you can't build.

A buddy of mine lives in a suburban city where they limit how many square feet a detached garage can be, but not an attached garage. So he "attached" the house to the shop. The shop doors face the house garage doors (which are on the side of the house), with the house roof extended to the shop roof, over the driveway between them. He got his 40x40 shop in a residential area. It looks really nice too - the shop is constructed with the same brick, trim and roof material as the house.

How your new garage will look also depends on its construction. A garage using significantly different materials than the house will stand out because it will not be compatible with the house and will look out of place.

There are plenty of big houses. But those of us with modest ones get screwed and have to get zoning variances.

Is it flat? If the garage is above the house it'll look terrible. Below the house, not so bad.

This is a 12 foot, but at basement level.

Garage doesnt have to match if its far enough away. I would be more concerned about disproportioned roof heights. I have a single story MCM ranch style house. The roof is 13 ft at the highest point. The garage wall were 12 ft. I didnt want my garage roof to be much higher then the house. This lead to going the 1/12 single slope or mono-pitch roof. A typical roof with a 4/12 pitch to match the house would have put a 24ft high barn in the back. Alot of time and thought was put into the garage design to keep it from outweighing the house curb appeal and more complementing it.
