I would try again to figure out the addition idea over the detached idea. You could put a second bay beside the existing & then ad on a deep double behind that. You could end up with 4 full bays with work space behind them along the back wall. It would give you way more garage & with your roof lines you would have a way larger storage space above!
I like the idea of being able to have the boat hooked up in the garage when you want it.

I know what your saying but the contractor is saying its not a good idea. If he's not comfortable doing, then I kind of have my hands tied. He really knows his stuff and just did 8 months of work for me, so I trust his judgement.

I also do not have the stud height on the current attached garage high enough to be able to clear my boat. My boat stays at the lake for most of the summer, so I just need a place to bring it inside in spring and fall to prep for use and off season storage.

Lastly, I would prefer a detached building b/c my wife and I just had a baby and I need a place I can go and be loud and do guy things and not disturb the baby.

Speaking of my house renovation, here are some pics of that if anyone is interested. Took from March until October with about 6 weeks worth of breaks in there.

New front door, we opened this north facing wall up and were shocked to find no insulation at all in it. No wonder it was cold around there!

Redid the entranceway with tile.

30 year old cupboards look brand new with some stain and new handles.

Concrete countertops in the kitchen.

New 4 door fridge.

Bathroom tub with TV.

Basement Bathroom

Basement Bathroom Tub.

Smaller basement bedroom.

Larger basement bedroom.

Office.

Entertainment room.

WOW !! Looks fantastic! That's your contractors work? Seems like a keeper. I hear ya about the separate building & the noise. What about putting dormers on both sides of the roof of your detached plan? It would give you more storage space.

I would have the same problem here with the bedroom windows. They would be to small according to code here.

The fisheye camera lens I used screws with the image a little bit and makes them look smaller.

When I bought the house I got a copy of the building code and found the minimum requirements for basement bedroom windows. These windows met the criteria (we checked ahead of time b/c we were prepared to change them if they were too small).

The only thing we have to do is dig the window wells a bit bigger which I am going to do this spring to meet code.

Thank you. I wanted to use a lot of Pine in the basement as it reminded me of being up at the cabin. Once your past the entranceway into the house it switches to a dark stained oak. I like having two different looks to the different zones.

Thanks, originally there was a 2x4 structure with drywall overtop to make the railing in that spot. It looked terrible after 30 years of people rubbing against it, or staining it by putting wet things on it, and it was too tall. I knew I wanted to change it but I didn't know what I wanted to do exactly.

I'll admit I got the idea for the glass from a house I saw online. Its a 2x4 structure, with drywall overtop on the dark grey area, with ceramic tile at the bottom to make a kick plate.

We used a mounting system for the glass which left us a gap all the way around so we could put and LED lighting system around the glass. This lights up the stairway at night for safety, but also looks really cool. The lights are on a sunrise/sunset timer, but can also be manually controlled. They can also be changed to any color you wish from the control panel hidden in the closet.

The glass is a 2'x4' piece I ordered from a local glass company. The outer casing of the railing is made from pine, with the corner rounded piece shaped by hand.

I played around with that scenario in my sketching program, I even tried putting an indentation at the front and the back, but it made my work bench all messed up b/c of how I wanted it built in the corner.

I don't really use air tools that much, I just have a portable air compressor I use, and its more than enough for what I do. Same with the Shop Vac. I started to really like the idea of the bigger covered entranceway as well.

So after many revisions, I finally have my building permit in hand to start on my garage. Construction begins in two weeks.

Ended up going with a simpler design, my other plans got rejected. I wasn't allowed to have the large overhang that I wanted over the entrancway as it would have required a support post for snow load. Because of the support post the roof overhang wasn't considered free standing and would get added to my overall square footage which put me over the limit.

So we are going to with 25' feet wide by 28' deep. 1' overhangs on the side and back and a 3' overhang over the front doors. 12' stud height and two 10'x10' doors.

Its not exactly what I wanted but I hope it will be a good compromise. I'm planning on buying some land and building a proper shop one day but until then this will hopefully work.

I am glad you are getting your building, but I have to say- some places put people thru a lot of needless hoops. I have always lived in the country. I have only been limited in building by my pocket book. I certainly don't want someone down the road telling me what I should or shouldn't do. I can see ordinances regarding a nuclear waste dump being put next door, but to regulate the size of a shop... some people just don't have enough to do.

My hats off to you for dealing with it. Also- very nice work on your house. Hope your shop turns out as nice.

Yeah for sure I'll start a project thread. Unfortunately its not going to be as exciting of a garage as I hoped but I plan on incorporating some ideas I've gotten from here, as well as some of my own.

Thank you, I too wish I could just do whatever I wanted building wise. To be fair, they really aren't that strict here compared to other places is, its just that I was pushing to build something that wasn't the usual cookie cutter garage, and I am in a neighborhood that is well established and not seen any new construction since the 1990's.

If I am honest, if I had built my dream garage on this yard, it would have looked out of place. I am happy it all worked out in the end. Now to get all my materials and tradespeople lined up to make this happen!
