Toying with enlarging my garage.

Building is 30x42x14, but the back has an apartment, so it's really 30x26.

Thinking of adding 20 feet at the front, shop would be 30x46, building 30x62.

As is, even my pickup would be pretty tight. It's about 23ft long. Figure stuff along the walls and there's not much room.

More is better but costs more $. So how much more can you easily afford? How does the building fit on the existing property and how about the addition?

You can always follow what I heard as “the drag racer’s philosophy”.

If some is good, more is better, and too much is enough.”

Once you are digging for foundation and framing, it really is a lot less to just make it bigger. If you have the room to comfortably enlarge, make it bigger than you think you need. No one ever said, "Damn, that garage is just too big".

I spent quite a bit of time on sizing and situating our new garage on to our home and lot. After reviewing with my builder, my wife, and MrBill himself, we decided to add an extra 10 feet (in the middle) and go from 30x40, to 30X50. Now that the frame is up, and the trusses are dried in, I've spent D-A-Y-S walk in and around it, thinking at first it was way to big, and I over did it. However, once I measured out the trailer, and cars/trucks going inside, I realized that the extra money spent to add the additional 10 feet, was well spent.

PS: I still question my sanity on the whole affair, and will till I put the first of the toys inside.

Maybe when the heat bill arrives in January.

Always hard to visualize the size of things until you pack it full and wish you had added another 2 feet here and 10 feet there. If you know anyone that uses CAD drafting maybe they can draw something up for you. Or lay out the building with a string line and park everything in the lines and see if it is enough??

As for the mention of the heating bill, you can always build walls to section things off.

Easier to ask forgiveness than to ask to expand the garage again.

Only thing I gave to ask is my wallet and my time.

This is GJ…go big or go home.

maybe consider future equipment/toys/shop use when laying out things. As mentioned you can hang insulated curtains to Isolate heat, as well as, dust from a table saw or other activities like welding.

this is 32x56 and every inch is full of stuff or my shop. Has living above for guests.IMG_2151.jpegIMG_2099.jpeg

I bet the overall cost difference between 20 & 30 feet is minimal. It'll be worth the extra size the first time you have to stash something inside that you hadn't planned on. Put thermals on if you don't want to spend on heating it....LoL
