Garage storage

Howdy out there! I just bought my 1st home and it has a beautiful unfinished 3 car attached garage. I'm planning on turning this into a fully functional workshop. My first intention is to start building some storage shelving to organize all of my girlfriends stuff which would leave me with the majority of the garage left for building workbenches and everything else. My question is what would you recommend to start this whole process. I have worked with Unistrut products before and think they would be a great way to make a nice customized look to maximize all available space. Cheers/jeers...other ideas?

Too liitle info... How much are you looking to spend? I started out with building shelves but ended up finding an awesome deal on Gladiator cabinets... I just don't care for the look of home made shelves...

I've had almost all the shelving you can buy or make and i'd recommend either buying commercial racking that comes in several depths from 2 to 4 foot especially if you have a fairly tall garage. or costco sells some 6.5 foot wide 2 foot deep ones. both are pretty solid and i like the fact you don't have to put a shelf on the floor so you can roll your lawnmower or tool box or cabinets under them with storage above.

here's a couple pictures of the $150 costco metal shelving unit and with 2 units you can make this almost 20 foot section.

the commercial racking can hold a ton especially if you have the shelf supports. this shelf with about 2000 pounds (has had up to 4000 on that shelf) is 3/4 inch pressboard on little metal supports about every foot.

welcome to the forum and nice topic. you'll also get a lot of ideas if you do some searching and reading because you are not the first person wanting to maximize their space.

Ok here is the wall I intend to build this shelving to. I not scared to spend a little money here but due to all the stuff my girlfriend has, maximizing every nook of space is essential.

Costco sells black heavy duty storage containers with yellow lids that are about 16 inches tall and hold a lot of stuff that are great for storing items and keeping them organized and mostly dust free. especially if you are planning on doing any work in the shop to create some debris and dust.

of course you can custom build shelves and I've done that, but when your needs change the steel ones change in a few minutes and you'll have to rebuild the wood ones you built.

hanging shelves works too and the double hanging ones are my favorite. after all said and done they are probably as expensive and the heavy duty metal ones that stand on the ground so you can load them up.

I've gt a whole wall of cabinets that the previous owner built. I still haven't fills them all. If you have a saw an kreg jig u could make some pretty nice cabinets

Big time... Years ago, I had a live-in-gf who used a whole third of the garage with her ****..... Was glad to see her go, and even glader when her pile of **** left...

This! Put her stuff in Rubbermaid storage containers and stack in the attic or a closet! The garage is a mans room! I don't even let my wife park her car in our garage!
Well, to be fair, we do have a side entrance garage and 5 cars in the driveway. No way she could back out in the morning with the other 4 in the driveway.

My suggestion? Get some graph paper and make a garage layout and do cut outs of what you want in the garage and see how it all fits. Looking at your photos it appears that the garage door track is right where you want cabinets.
