Garage Sub Panel

We just bought a new house with a two car attached garage. Currently there is only one outlet in the garage. It is a GFCI that is on the same circuit as every other GFCI in the house. Kitchen, bathrooms all of them. They are tied into a GFCI breaker on the main panel. I would like to leave that outlet be and set up a sub panel in the garage which will have capacity for 4 to 6 outlets, 2-4 shop lights, 220v plug for welder and, 220 plug for future compressor. I use all the usual toys wood working lathe, table saw, small metal lathe, drill press etc. The main panel is 200 amp and there is already a 50 amp breaker running a 220v feed for a hot tub that is no longer there. How many amps should I run to the sub panel? Would 50 be enough for what I want to do? If so I could easily re route the hot tub feed to serve my purpose but, I don't know if 50 amps will cut it.

Thanks!
Zach

This is in the same structure? They make an 8 space 100A panel just for this. Hook one circuit to 120 recepts, one too lights and it leaves 6, 2 for a modest comp and 2 for a mig as well as other 240 and 2 tailor another circuit.

That's normal for the gfi thing, usually in condos or tow houses you see that a lot. 50 amps would be fine but you could prob go up to 60 with that same wire, just have to see what size it is and conductor count

Not sure on the wire size but, I'll check. The lathe is a small craftsman 618 with a 3/4hp motor. The welder is an power arc 140st but, I'd like to get a millermatic 211 eventually.
