My house has a bunch of mickey mouse bubba job wiring.
A few of the interior lighting and outlet circuits are overloaded.
I had a 200 amp panel installed a few years ago. The electrician made my house panel into a sub panel and ran conduit for my shed and a shop I want to build in a few years.
I want to take the garage off of the house panel and put it on the outside panel (it has plenty of breaker slots by running new circuits and outlets.
This will free up a few 15 amp circuits on the house panel...then I can straighten out the interior circuits.
When I had the service to the house upgraded, I had two 220V circuits installed for an air compressor and my table saw.
The electrician ran a piece of 3/4" metallic conduit through my exterior brick wall straight into the garage. to two 2" deep boxes.
One has the outlet for my table saw, the other I use for my compressor.
I now have a jointer, a planer and a lathe that are all 220V and I'll be using my garage as a shop for the next few years.
I want to add one additional 220V circuit with two circuits for the lathe, jointer and planer.
I will use L620 twist lock connectors on the machines. I want to drop one outlet on service cord from the ceiling.
I also want to run two 20 amp 110V circuits and run 6 outlets on each circuit.
All of these would be on my new exterior panel.
My garage is drywalled.
To me it looks like I have two options: run conduit and THWN 12 gauge through the existing conduit that the electrician installed.
I can have up to 16 12 gauge THHN/THWN conductors according to code.
Assuming two wires for each circuit and 1 12 gauge ground for everything, that would add up to 13 conductors.
I could 3/4 conduit to a box in the center of the ceiling and branch off to metal outlet boxes.
This way, I would have to deal with the drywall, which would be a royal pain in the ***.
I am assuming I would have to use THWN as these circuits would be routed through conduit that goes to the exterior of the building?
I'd rather use THHN as I can easily get it at the box store.
The other option would be to run through the attic behind the drywall, through the existing circuit breaker panel and into the outside panel using romex.
The problem is that I would have to come into the bottom of the existing panel as the top side is full. This would be a royal pain as the the roof line is low, so getting to the walls from the top would be a *****...and even getting the romex to the panel would be a *****. I would also end up ripping out a crapload of drywall.
I am starting to wonder if I should install another sub panel just for the garage...
