Garage Transformation

My wife and I purchased our home about 5 years ago. We put in a lot of work and the house was really starting to shine but the garage was not functional for me. It was always cold the cement floor looked terrible. I had previously epoxy coated the floor to make it look better but it was not holding up very well. So out of the blue my wife suggested making the garage the next major project. (Guess I finally accomplished enough of the honey do list) Here is what the shop looked like before

This was just after the epoxy coat. It looked great for a while but didn't last.

Fast forward 4 years and this is where I begin again. I decided to insulate and drywall and then make the garage function the way I needed it to. So off to the store for insulation and 5/8 drywall. My wife wanted to help through the entire process, and we spent many many hours installing insulation and then hanging drywall.

Then came countless hours of sanding and mudding. This was by far my least favorite part of all of this. If I never do drywall again it will be to soon!

Now it's time to paint and make it look presentable. My wife really liked the dramatic difference this made. Not only does it look good but it really brightened up the space.

Now at this point we both knew that the garage doors were total garbage and really didn't fit the theme and look of the house. I knew I was installing a lift in the near future and so the doors had to have a high track and be insulated. Then it was my wife's turn to chime in and pick out the style of the doors. The install took 1 day and once again transformed the look of the entire space.

One tip if you get direct sun all the time thru those garage door windows; have your windows tinted, keeps the heat down and nosy people from looking in too.

Now it was time to figure out what we were going to do with the floor. To be honest there was really only one consideration......Racedeck. The install was very straight forward and took the better part of the day.

I am planing on completing the ceiling and painting the header come spring time. The winter weather has come and the garage is still unheated.

Very nice. The before looks like my garage except I have a single 10' door rather than 2 smaller. Also I have to hoist my bicycle over my head and carry it above all the junk to store it for the winter in the garage somewhere, lol.

I have insulation left over from the house, but that's all I have. It's nice to see what my garage can look like maybe some day if I can get the cash to do it. I don't have high ceilings though so it would be a waste for me to spend on a lift just to lift up the car 6 inches, lol.

Love the floor. I have to do that some day.

I second the ceiling insulation and drywall.

My garage is attach, no heat. But it is sealed very tight (biggest issue was sealing up garage doors) - it rarely freezes. Actual temps of -10 this week and it just dropped below 32 for a little bit.

Nice work over all...looks wonderful.

Great looking work! Amazing the difference.

I was lucky to start w/ a finished garage but really need to make time to paint. I have tan walls and it looks nearly as dark as your garage before your update. Drives me nuts. Plus no windows.

Just curious, but what kind of epoxy did you use? I've been debating w/ myself over rather to do a high end epoxy material or splurge for the Race Deck tiles. I like the fact I can take the RD tiles w/ me if we move, etc. They are just more expensive. But I wouldn't have to grind & prep the floor (my understanding for good epoxy adhesion -- and then it seems some still have bad results).

Holy ****, nice job. That looks great. Just finished something similar to my garage. Nice workbench by the way. Like the light above it. To those who like the car as I do, I doubt he'll sell it as it matches his workbench.
One question though, where did you purchase the garage doors and if you don't mind the cost? I've looked and never really saw anything that I liked until now. Thanks
David

I originally had used the Rustolium epoxy on the floor. I had done days of prep work and within a few months it was starting to peel. The garbage doors, openers, high lift track, came from Fimbel and the entire setup cost right about 3500 installed. While I appreciate all the offers to remove the blue piece of metal from taking up space, I think I need to keep it after all the wife bought it for my 30th birthday.

Great job getting it done Bgcj5!
Mine is very similar to yours, only I still haven't found the time and oomph to finish the transformation yet.

Congrats and well done!

Wow excellent job! I love your 68 camaro as well (I'm a 69 owner). Color combo looks sharp with the car. I hope to do a lift someday as well - bet that is really nice to have in your space. Keep the updates coming!

The garage looks great! Great job on the transformation. Love the Camaro as well. What's the story on the blue cabinet on the back wall?

How about a ceiling?
I sure love what you did with the space and the Atlas 408 SL 4 post lift is what I want too!
I am a big fan of Cameros, your is pretty cool.
Hope you don't mind a Mustang guy doing the same with his garage?

Looks good. But ceiling drywall is normally done before the walls so the wall drywall will support the ceiling drywall along the edges.

The bench is an old valve service table. It was sitting in a dealership I used to work at. At the time it was used as a paint mixing bench and had approx 3 inches of caked on paint. It was offered to me for free just to free up the space. I took it home, stripped it down and repainted made a new bench top. It has worked out great the last 5 years.

Great job on the inside of that garage. It makes me want to completely rip down my interior I finished with OSB and throw up some drywall. Keep us updated with all the improvements.

Oh she is a keeper for sure, both the wife and the car! I am not planning on doing drywall on the ceiling. My current plan is to add some lighting, insulate, and then use soffit vinyl for a plank wood feel but with no real weight or loss of height.
