Thinking about putting a TV in the shop.

Mainly for watching DIY, instructional videos while working on something..

Just trying to think through the whole process so I don't have a "man, I wish I had done that!!" moment.

I'm pretty sure I'll install one centered over my main workbench..

Let's see your shop TV set ups.. Anything you'd change?

Mine hangs in the corner on a shelf. I had one from the house but it died and was replaced with another CRT tv from a friend.

As cheap as flat screens are now, I'd replace one in the house and bring the "used" one out to the garage and use a wall mount.

My garage TV originated as a DIY video only TV.... Direct TV box, receiver, two floor speakers later I have my man cave..... background noise while I work is nice.

I don't have a pic handy, but I have a 42" LCD left over from house upgrades. It's mounted on a hefty articulated arm so I can move it around a bit to viewing. It's on a "Joey" synced to one of the house Dish Hopper units. I have full control of the Hopper from the shop, so anything on our 260 channel Dish setup is available. It's hooked to an old Radio Shack tuner in case I want sound all over the shop, plus I keep a 10' VGA cable in a drawer for hooking up the laptop. The TV is in the work area and there is no ready solution for swinging it around to view in the rest of the shop. I may just hang a small 22" or something out there and feed it with an RF converter.

I just bought a 39" led insignia $169 on black friday for the garage. I am going to hook it up to my computer right by the lift for alldata and the internet. I plan on buying some rabbit ears for the local channels.

I use the laptop with Windows extended desktop seen below the TV for instructional videos and looking up stuff while working in the shop. I could feed the TV with the computer, but the computer monitor and laptop screen work fine for watching instructional videos or looking at reference material.

The TV is used for watching races and movies in the shop.

If you mount the TV high up make sure to angle it down so you have a straight on viewing angle.

If your main focus is looking up things and DIY videos I would consider getting a cheap tablet. They are portable so you can have it right by where you are working. If you want to watch sports, etc. - that is very different.

I've been using an iPad, but want to upgrade to something a little larger..

I'm sure programming of some sort would eventually make it's way to the box. ;)

I was actually looking at this same TV. How do you like it so far?

It's still in the box. I have a few other upgrades for my garage coming in Wednesday so I am going to install/open everything probably Thursday. I let you know how it turns out with pictures.

One thing you can look into is, if you are planning on wall mounting the TV you can go to Best Buy and ask if they have any TV's without the pedestal. I used to work at BBY and they would sell those things super cheap because they are without a pedestal.

Just thought I'd share that with ya.

I bought a 42" Sansui, Samsung, or Sa something or other at WallyWorld and mounted it on my far wall. I can see it if setting at my desk, or I can see it if standing there running the lathe. And yes people, I moved my lathe from in front of the TV.

I had a smaller TV out there, so when I ran the cable over to the new TV, I bought enough cable and ran it over to the other side of the garage and hooked up the little portable. So if I am standing there at my mill, I can kick the portable on and listen to it. You can see the small portable in the second or third pic.

I have no affiliation at all with this company but I am a real cheap asss so I will recommend Monoprice.com if you are going to add a TV anywhere in your house. Once you see what they get for USB cables and TV mounts you will never go into another BBY.

This is kind of wierd...I was just trying to think of the name of monoprice, as I need to order a wall mount for my new 51" TV... Literally like 5 minutes ago...

No pic of mine, but I've got an old school 50in RCA and a 500watt home theater setup in mine. All were free in good working order from the landfill.

I ended up mounting mine on a strut trolley. The only wall space available was not a good viewing area so when I want to watch tv I just pull it over. I just finished adding a wood shelf. I added a wireless cable box and still going to add a sound bar. The whole thing was built with strut and 1/2 BIP
Not the best picture, but you get the idea.

I just hung a old monitor right on the pegboard. Good for procedures and parts diagrams. I can watch cable on my iPad so I thought I'd just plug my iPad into it to watch tv, but they don't let you do that. So I'm still looking for a good way to get some programming out there...

I just mounted a 19" (I think..) flatscreen above the workbench on a pivoting arm.

I hooked up a Roku box http://www.roku.com/) instead of Cable or DVD player. From it I can stream Netflix, Pandora, various news stations, Itunes, Podcasts etc. The thing is so worth the $75 or so I paid for it.

Well, I'm pretty sure he was talking about this coming weekend..

#2 in the nation..

Haven't played a top 10 team since 2009.
Haven't beaten a top 10 team since 2006.
Have allow right at 100 points in the last 3 games against unranked teams.

I think State is gonna put it on them.. Illinois put 35 points up on OSU... LOL..

But then again, I need OSU and FSU to lose to get Auburn in NC game..

FSU isn't going to lose..
I think OSU is..
I'm about 50/50 on Auburn and Mizzou..

I am conflicted though.. One of the most obnoxious football fans I know is an OSU fan, so I want them to loose just for him. ;)

If OSU, FSU and Auburn and they all win out, and the Orange Bowl passes on Alabama, Alabama and Auburn could meet in the Sugar Bowl and that would be excellent. LOL
