HI Guys,

The wife and I are finally purchasing our first home here in Phoenix. I have required there be a garage either attached or detached on anything we see. We found a house we love but the garage seems a bit on the smaller side at 15' x 19'.

How usable is this going to be? We have a long driveway to park a car, then the side yard that leads to the garage has another couple spaces for parking. So my wife and I's daily's would go there most likely and then I would have the garage for my project car. I have 3 E30's right now but I do not think i would even be able to cram 2 of them in there unless i was just going to be parking them and that is it.

Does anyone have a garage this size with pics on how you have it done up?

Thank you!

One car in there and it'll need to come out when working on any other non car projects. I would do a workbench along the 19' dimension as you have a little extra width than a normal 1 car but you're also a little on the short side (generally 12x20-22' ) get everything else up off the floor that won't fit under the bench (wall cabinets, shelves, storage lofts ect) if you have pictures that will help with ideas based on door/window placement ect.

I have a 14x20 attached. I have a 79 Camaro in there now most the way through welding in new floor pans. I have a workbench down the 20' side 2' deep. Cabinets against the ceiling to maximize storage space. 30"x48" weld table in a corner. Couple tool chests along the back wall. Storage area in attic above garage for seldom used tools and car parts. 8x16 shed in the back w/ lawn tools, carpentry tools and building materials.

The small size *****. I have to plan out each project w/ space utilization in mind. For instance, I pulled the doors off of the car to gain access to the floor pans because the doors won't open all the way up inside the garage. Any maintenance on the DD is in the driveway. Carpentry projects are on the back patio. Must keep work space organized as I go due to limited space.

I have to decide on new tool purchases with a plan on where I will put them. I would love to buy a large air compressor, but I don't know where I will jam it in.

If the wife must have the house, make sure there is room to expand on the garage.

Thank you! Yeah, I will submit some pics next time I can go there. It was too dark last night when I was there. I like the idea of the long bench across the back, then do some cabinets on the sides and try and keep them as deep as I can without cutting into the space.

19' deep is only good for a mid-sized car.

The cars that would be in there are 14.5' in length and less than 5' 5" wide. They are fairly small cars that I work on. I wouldn't have an issue moving them out for other projects either.

I was bummed, the other house we liked had a MASSIVE garage, tall enough for a lift and 3 cars in there. but the house just isn't what we are after

Great info! Very helpful. My biggest thing is going to be keeping it organized. I have a bad habit of just buying large items when i do not have the space for them haha

It's going to ****, plain and simple. What you have is essentially a single stall with a little extra width. Even with nothing in the garage it is going to be tight to work on the car, add in tool boxes, machines, bench, etc and it gets tight fast. You will have to focus on what you absolutely need and make sure you optimize your choice.

I have a 16x20' attached garage. I use it as an auto shop and woodshop (need to pull the car out for this).

Right now there is a full size car, 2 spare V6 engines, 3 complete AWD transmissions, two rear diffs, 3 complete sets of tires/wheels, engine stand, cherry picker, work bench, 44" toolbox, 4 drawer filing cabinet, 3 shelf side cabinet, multiple plastic totes full of parts, welder, multiple jacks and jack stands, all kinds of power tools, etc, etc. You get the point :)

If you are smart in laying things out it is very doable. I think one of the best things you can do is build a shed to put all the lawn equipment in.

With that said, I would take more space in a heartbeat.

I would get some A/C in there right now so it will be useable come May. Probably a larger window unit would work well in that space. In my opinion swamp coolers and shop tools don't go together....

Yeah, if i could find something bigger I would. Most the garages in the homes we like are all smaller. couple had had two cars but mostly its detached with a single bay.
