Garage Ventilation?

Fellas, I need your ideas on how to vent this garage. During the warm season, it becomes a baking greenhouse in there. I have no ventilation nor insulation (see pics and video). The roof has that cement tile. I was thinking of an attic fan but I would need to locate a spot for a gable. Any ideas? Thanks.

I agree on the ventilation but I dont have any ideas on that issue that wont have you cutting holes in the roof.. however, there is a heat resistant paint out that would cut down on the heat coming in the garage. You could spray it on your roof decking. I dont recall the brand right now.

I did a search and found this:

Looks like they have some vent boxes that can be installed or a clay tile covered ridge vent. Only downside is this might mean you'd have to remove some or the roof to install!

Another option is to install some double bubble foil insulation just under the roof sheething. This will block some of the radiant heat from coming through. Something like this (can find it at any home-store):

You can also cover the ceiling with drywall to put a ceiling on the garage space (and make an attic) and put standard insulation on that.

Good luck, hot garage is no fun!

You might consider a couple of eyebrow roof vents. Still have to cut the roof but your house roof looks so nice you'd need something architecturally appealing. An eyebrow with cement tiles would match I think.

Maybe face the road with one and the side or rear with another for some cross flow.
You could also put some foundation vents low on the sides to get air coming in low and give you a chimmney effect out the eyebrow vents.

Other option for the roof might be a matching chimmney. It'd just be a vent but at least it would match.

Thanks Fellas. I might even ask if a roofing company may attach some eyebrow vents. I am weary about messing with the roof...possible leakage in the future :(

Man, you need some insulation! I suggest that you buy some foam insulation as thick as you can find and cut it into strips to fit between the rafters, then glue it in place and add some furring strips below it just for good measure. You also need some sort of vent fan to pull the hot air out from the high point, maybe one of those mushroom type fan through the roof to the side. Without a way to **** the hot air out the room will never be comfortable to work in during the summer months

Here's a few ideas:

- Add a radiant barrier between the roof trusses. It's kind of a pain to install but WILL make a difference. HD has rolls of it in several types.

- Add a ridge vent along the peak. Remove the peak tiles, cut the roof sheathing back about 1-2" along the peak, then add a spacer/screen along the cut. Re-install the roof tiles on top of the spacer. There are several types of ridge vents available; some look like coarse abrasive pads, others are molded plastic with baffles. They're usually about 1-1/2" thick, so the peak tiles would be raised up by that amount. Not really noticeable unless you're looking for it. Not a bad idea to add ridge vents to ANY roof; keeping a little air flowing through the attic is key to preventing problems.

We also live in Southern California and know all about extremely hot garages in the summer months. We had a cement tile roof installed about ten years ago and had a power vent installed over the house's attic space. We were impressed with its performance and regretted not having one installed in the garage at that time. Recently the company that installed the roof offered a free inspection. Inquired about installing a vent in the garage and they gave a price of about $550 for the fan and installation. I did the wiring. The vent fan came with an adjustable thermostat which we've set at the highest temp. We installed a parallel wired switch that lets us turn it on manually. This has turned out to be a good investment. Just by having a vent near the top of the roof allows lots of hot air to escape. On the hotest of the summer days it will run for relatively short periods. Now the garage is no warmer than the ambient temp. I wasn't about to tackle messing with the roof tiles myself. In my view this was a job best done by the professional. Interestingly they had it installed in under thirty minutes.

Could always put a sidewall fan in if you were shy of messing with the roof tiles, and run some ducting from it up to the highest point in the attic.
