Garage w/Alcoves: Design Input/Recommendations Sought

Greetings - New poster here but not a new reader. :)

I live in a mid-80's tract house with attached garage that I would estimate at 1.5-2 cars in size. ;) I've gotten two in before but it's really tight, and it obviously has room for more than just one auto. Irrelevant for now.............On one (long) side of the garage (street-facing side FWIW), there are two permanent, built-in alcoves. These were a little larger originally, but the previous owner framed them in to give a more finished/"interior" look. :dunno: Both are ~32" deep and ~80" tall. One is 36" wide/long, and one is 69" wide/long.

Sort of like: (See .jpeg Attachment)

I would ideally like to put open metal shelving/racking in one for storage boxes and containers, and leave the other open for bulkier items (spare floor tile piles) and garden and "long" tools (rake, shovel, brooms, window washer extension handle, etc.). Shelving to fit either space is tough to find with nothing filling up the space completely (depth or width), and putting tool hooks/attachments up around the perimeter of the inside of the alcove seems to leave a lot of wasted space (especially in the larger alcove).

And so I pose to you all: design ideas on how to maximize the upright tool storage and get shelving in that holds boxes/cartons?

Thanks!
Dan

build wooden shelves?

Definitely an option, but 1) I'm not that handy and it'll just creep in scope/finish/complexity (LOL!), and 2) I travel for a living so my time home is short and other things always take priority. Will consider that option though....thanks!

I'd go for some nice (adjustable?) solid shelving, and maybe a wall of pegboard, slatwall, or similar for hanging tool storage.

OR you could build some recessed workbenches, which would look pretty awesome as well.

I think what you do with those spaces depends on what you want to do in your garage. Do you work on cars or do woodworking? Or do you just need storage? You could use those areas differently.

If you're not handy, you can buy a workbench from Sears, Lowes, or wherever and put that in one of those spots.
