Garage wall art from Jay Leno's garage?

In my garage, I have very high ceilings (~24'), which results in a LOT of wall space. Right now, they're just bare, but I'd eventually like to put something up there.

Was watching a Jay Leno's Garage video the other day and noticed he had some very large wall art up in his garage (well, warehouse) and I was curious if anyone knows where one can buy that type and size of wall art?

Here's a sample I pulled from the youtube video -- you can see the wall art in the background.

Any print shop that makes vinyl banners will do any artwork for you at 600dpi or greater.
Any custom size, full color.

A10x26' costs, I think, $271+-.

10x26' @ 600dpi is about 13.5 gigapixels. That's a big image.

At a reasonable viewing distance for a picture that size you could be well below 100 dpi and never know it.

Virtually all retail and professional prints (4x6, 5x7, 8x10) are done at 300 dpi and those have a viewing distance of 12 - 24 inches.

Are there auto-themed websites out there that offer images of suitable size/resolution to make prints like these?

Jay has mentioned those big posters in the past. He finds a small picture he likes and then he takes to NBC and has the graphics department enlarge it for him.

You could try this place: http://www.fathead.com/ They sell mostly sports related posted (like full size football players) but it appears they will make posters based on your submitted material.

I've been there numerous times. Some are hanging art attached to the walls & others (in the workshop part of the property) are painted directly on the wall itself.

& like stuart said, "the graphics dept enlarge them"... but more than a few of them are actually painted by the scenery guys. In fact, I've seen them up close & I can't think of one that is printed.

Try U.S. Nameplate in Mt. Vernon Iowa attention Nate Smith. They can make huge banners and such. They do many different types of materials too.

I'm in love with Jay's garage, I would love to see it in person.
My dream would be to have the antique radio version of Jay Leno's Garage.
Oh to have walls that high to put some nice enlarged radio advertising on.
I looked at a couple of the mural links and they do some killer stuff.

Just be aware that if the image is copyrighted any reputable print shop is likely to want to see proof that you have permission to reproduce it.

The vast majority of old ads will not require any copyright proof. From what I've been told several of his friends/employees have given him some of that artwork as well. He has an original sign from Foreign Motors somewhere in there my then boss gave him. (for those who don't know - it was a car dealership in MA where Jay had his first job)

Jay's garage looks awesome. I've got 2 standing invites to tour it if I can ever get out to LA, one from Jay himself. I was on an episode of his web show back in 2010 - one about automotive literature (my previous career). My boss was too shy to film with Jay at Pebble Beach. I got a frantic phone call while I was looking at the show field to get back to the booth asap...walked into Jay and his camera man/producer and a mutual friend of ours. I had 2 minutes to watch him film a segment with the guy next to us (the other vender in the episode) and then a minute quick conversation with Jay before the camera started rolling. totally mentally unprepared, but it came out much better then it felt, and afterward got to talk with him a bit before the crowd realized he was there and started amassing.

Question for the guys who have been to there.....what's the story with the Dennis Gage mustache guy sign that always appears in the right corner of Jay's videos?

I just looked at Youtube, and there's a little picture of Jay in the lower right corner but no picture of Dennis Gage. :dunno:

Jay has stated numerous times in videos those big pictures are hand painted. Not sure about the smaller stuff.

Do you know if he has ever thought about opening it up to the public ?

There was a guy on here that posted some pretty cool vinyl graphics that he does/make. But I can't find the post now. Somebody else know of his post and put it up?

If you are looking for vintage originals pm me. I have a few sized 20"x41" up to 6'x6'. I also can point you the direction of other dealers and collectors that you could source from.

I am strictly speaking of original prints that range from $5-$thousands.

Google for high res images. You can find some decent stuff for free. As long as your not reproducing to make profit I wouldn't work to much about copy rights. If its on the net and its free your pretty safe. Next thing is find a grand format printer in your area. Most sign shops have 64" wide printers but the larger graphic houses have 126" and 197" wide grand format printers. Just have banners printed and hang them on the wall. Cheapest way to get the look you want.

Good files will be your toughest problem. 75 DPI at FULL SIZE is a generic target but it really has to do with the quality of the photo. I have a photo on my way that I enlarge from a 21 DPI file and it looks great. The guy that took the shot just had a great camera and 24" lense and shot it from 80 feet away and you can see the grain of the riders leather suit.

Expect to pay $2.00 - $3.00 per square foot for the banners depending on the print quality of the printer. Lots of 1000DPi grand format printers on the market now. For bill boards the standard was 100 DPI but like anything else technology has pushed the DPI higher and higher. This is great but slows down the printers output speed and cost more for the printing.

Good luck
