Garage Wall Lettering

I have seen some of you have custom signs on your garage wall. I would like to put up a large (15" high letters) garage name on my brick wall. What is the best way to do this? Get a stencil made and paint? Or create on a painted piece of plywood so it is more flat and mount the plywood sign to the wall? Vinyl lettering? Any pics would be greatly appreciated.

Here's mine. I fabricated it out of polished 304 stainless steel and had a local sign shop bend the neon to my pattern.

Could use a overhead projector and project the lettering on the wall then freehand paint it

This...

Particularly if you're looking for an "old school" look to it. I love the look of a painted sign on brick - even better if you "weather" it a bit:

And no sign here, but some downlights just add to the effect:

Mine is going to be a tricky SOB.

I'm going to do an American flag, but with metal strips as the stripes, and stars cut out of a sheet. All to be painted, then lightly blasted with sand to allow rust to set in. Giving it a worn patina look at which time I'll clear coat it to protect it. The letters will be underneath with the same worn texture.

You can get large sign-making letters that are machine-cut from thick rigid foam, they are all over ebay, they look very cool and are not too expensive, unless you are spelling out something really lengthy.

PAToyota,
Your King Midas painted wall would be ideal! No idea how to achieve it without spending tons of money to bring in a painter. I don't think I can paint that myself. Any thoughts?

This is the brick wall I would like to have painted with the garage name. Any thoughts? I don't know that I could get the projector idea to work out well. hahaha I also have concern about the electrical conduits getting in the way of a nice clean look. I am having an electrician out this week to see about hiding some the the conduits, but it is a brick wall and I will probably be pretty limited in what I can do with them.

I think a projector would work out great for that. If you don't or can't move the conduit just paint right over the top of it. It will give it the industrial feel

I agree, just paint over the conduit. It'll help it blend in - cheaper than having them moved too.

What would be the best paint to use? I free-handed one of Gus Maanum's pictures in pencil on the wall in my basement shop, then I used acrylic paint to fill in. The cream came out perfectly, but the black didn't cover the original wall color. So there are visual brush strokes, which I kinda like. Here is an in-progress shot -

The band saw gives dimension to the painting. I wonder if a different paint type would have covered better? If I decide I don't like the bleed thru, then I will add another coat of black. But I need to decide quickly because I will soon be building a workbench in front of it.

Thanks guys! I like the brush strokes too. I was going to use a projector as has been suggested, but I couldn't find one to borrow, and I certainly wasn't going to spend hundreds of dollars to buy one. The painting isn't quite finished (kinda like my garage!), but it's almost done. Here's the original that I used as a basis for the painting.

I have some memorabilia from our trip to Bonneville in 2005, as well as some traditional hot rod posters for the other walls. I will post up pics once it's done and the workbench is built.

[sorry for slightly drailing the thread]

Very cool. The brush strokes makes it look even more like its in motion, leave it alone!

All these look great! One thing you may want to consider if you paint it, is to paint it on a large board or canvas. That way if you ever move, or rearrange your garage, you can take it with you or put it on another wall.

If I spent the time to make something that nice, I would hate to leave it behind . . .
