Garage Wall Materials / Building Code?

By accident I read something someplace that has me concerned.

The wall adjacement to the living space has to have at least one 5/8" sheet of drywall on each side.... right? Or did I read that wrong? What is it supposed to be?

Im planning out my garage. It's an attached 3 car that is unfinished on 3 walls, however the adjacent wall has fiberglass insulation between the studs (2x4), with a layer of 2" blue hard insulation foam, then 3/8" T111. Hardly what I'd consider a firesafe wall.

MY fix?!?!? Was thinking of taking that wall back to the studs, possibly re-insulating it (more for sound issues), then putting up a double layer of 5/8" drywall, THEN doing whatever it is I want - on that wall in particular... 1/2" t111 to 4', pegboard to 8' and then shelving at the top. OR is wood on that wall a bad idea?

Help?

Edit - Remaining walls I planned on insulating (after running airlines and electric - both in conduit) and then facing with the same 1/2" t111 floor to ceiling and paint it all white.

The firewall is a good thing....I would hate for the house catch fire and burn up my garage.

LOL... as long as I can get my Camaro out first I don't think I'd be terrribly upset if the whole house burnt to the ground.

I just want to do this right...once.

I could be wrong, but I think a single layer of 5/8" fire rated on an insulated wall is enough. It's all I've seen around here but check with your town inspector to be sure.
Now if you want to go above and beyond for sound insulation, there are some threads about that.

What is the wall material in the living space side of the wall? If it's 5/8" drywall, that's a good start - you'd only need to add one layer on the garage side of the wall with fire taping as a minimum finish. Apply whatever paneling you want over that.
