Garage Wall Prep for Paint

Having a slight issue prepping for paint on my garage walls. I'm not really sure how to address the area around my garage door. There are exposed boards and the drywall is between those. Caulk? Spackle? I'm not looking for perfectly smooth, or anything, just want to fill in the gaps before painting.

Either leave the wood natural or put some primer on it like killz and paint over the whole thing.

To keep it simple caulk is your best bet. The wood will move with humidity, so a flexible joint like caulk is best (without getting creative). When the wood shrinks it's not likely the caulk will stick well to the end of the drywall and you may end up with some hairline cracks. When you go to prime everything make sure to prime inside those drywall/wood joints and then caulk after that. Do your top coat and it should all look fine.

use a Flexible & Paintable caulk... as stated above expansion and shrinkage with temperatures MAY cause separation and cracks. and Kilz/ Prime the wood BEFORE paint so there is no variation in color.

Second this. Did this when I painted my garage last fall and turned out great.
