Garage walls?

Just bought a pre 1980 home and the garage has crappy paneling in it and one wall meets the kitchen. So the question at hand is I already have to pull the paneling down due to a water leak and what should I replace it with? I am tempted to use plywood so I can remove for future needs as the arise as I think they will. Or should I go ahead and sheet rock the wall? I like the remove able option but will more then likely replace the paneling with sheet rock thru out.

Thanks for the input.

Also what type of plywood and thickness would you recommend?

For the safety of you and yours you may wish to also consider a self closing solid core door between the house and attached garage. 5/8" fire code sheet rock is also the way to go, after you decide whether to insulate and if you are going to run electrical inside or surface mount on the walls. Plywood is nice but it will support a fire and drywall resists it.

On the wall that joins the kitchen I would use 5/8" sheetrock for the fire barrier. On the other walls I would use 1/2" plywood for durability and ease of hanging things off of it.

In addition to what the others have mentioned about needing the fire barrier and self closer on the the make sure the outlets are sealed. No need to let exhaust fumes get in the house.

If it were me I would sheetrock the adjoining wall, fire tape it and then cover it with 1/2 AC Ply, best of both worlds.

What if you sheet rocked the wall except where your pipes were, then put plywood over it, if you ever had to access your plumbing remove the plywood, kinda like a bulkhead in a basement. MM

I say keep the paneling and go with a "Brady Bunch" theme in the garage....Maybe get some lava lamps, rotating party lights, and some beads hanging in the doorways..
