So. I have a low yield well. Water is clean but not enough for outdoor water activities.

I bought two 300 gal, ibc totes, the shop has about 1000sq ft roof, and I had it draining down in one spot, now it drains into one tote, they have 2" outlets which I tied together, and they feed a RV style water pump, which feeds my shop hose bib (fed from house well). So now I can shut off my homes well to hose bib tap and my outdoor hoses are fed from the totes.

I have a large, then small strainer on the downspout inlet, and a small inline strainer before the pump.

The totes are apparently food grade, contained fish oil. The one was quite clean with almost no smell. The other had some dark coloured stuff in the bottom, had an odour, if it is in fact fish oil it should be harmless? I didn't think water could clean oil very well, and I didn't want to use any degreasing chemicals so i just let it start filling with rain water.

Fish oil residue shouldn't harm the lawn or the garden ?

I take an Omega 3 Capsule two times a day, Omega 3 is basically a fish oil.

My workshop has a Potable Water service, from the city supply.

If worried, sell those and buy new plastic water tank. Depending on location a 500 gallon is $300 to $500 depending on dimensions.

Is it possible to back feed the tote water to the house if you forget to "shut off my homes well to hose bib tap". If so, you might consider putting a check valve in the line from the well to prevent that from happening.

Thanks. Setup works good. Just need some rain to fill my totes! I got about 100 gallons the other day. Watered the fresh sod a few times, seemed to like the fish oil. I will not be using this as potable water.

After some use the one tote that had some fish oil residue I'm betting will be clean.

And ill put a check valve in between my well supply before it goes to the hose bib feed, since the hose bibs have their own feed from the mechanical room (since they don't go through the softener/filter/uv etc)

You can put a cup full or so of Bleach in a full tote, to help keep anyting from 'growing' in the water.

Check valve or not, I wouldn't be comfortable having my potable water piping connected to non-potable collected rainwater.

Last time I checked, fish are not water soluble.
