GarageDeck Installation Help

The Garage Deck should be to me day after tomorrow and I need opinion on an aspect of installation. The exact dimension of my garage is 20' deep by 19'7" wide. Standard 16' door centered. Looking into the garage from the garage door I have the door to the house about midway on the right side wall and door to the backyard in the far right corner. I go in and out of the garage door into the house on the right hand side of the garage often so the cars are always parked just slightly justified to the left side of the garage. I have attached my design below.

The question I have is when leaving an expansion gap I need 19'6" of tile. So do I install just like it is in my diagram below OR do I install a 3" piece of tile down each side in order to make it perfectly even?

6 inch piece on one side seems like less hassle...perhaps all the way to the left of your garage because the entrance to your house is on the right. Would you settle for 3 inch edging on the side and leave 3 inches not tiled? Then you dont have to hassle with cutting any tiles.

On the left side of my garage, I have only 2 inches that I decided not to fill in. Lazy me, but its more $$ spent on tiles. If I ever have to move the floor to another garage (god forbid!!!) , these spacers will probably be chucked.

On the right side of my garage, the tile is almost flush to the wall. Man, is it nice to step out onto the tiled floor in the morning!

I considered ordering edging for both sides thus making making up the 6" but was concerned that I may run into a narrow spot or may want just a bit more than a total of 1" expansion space. That and the fact that the edging would have been quite a bit more money than just cutting a tile.

A tile is going to have to be cut regardless. So not a huge deal to basically cut a piece out of the middle of the tile in order to have the 3" piece for both sides. I'm more concerned the smaller pieces may not connect together all that well. If I just do a single 6" piece I think the right side by the doors is where to do it do to the placement of things inside.

Why not just keep whole tiles for the width and put the sloped threshold pieces on the sides? Wouldn't that be less expencive than cutting 20 tiles?

I know what you mean. Sometimes these things dont come up until you actually lay the tile out.

In my case, after driving myself nuts by measuring many times over, I was pretty confident I'd have a few inches on the sides; it turns out I only have 2 inches.

Nope. 3" edge are $1.89 each. Full tile is $2.02. I can get two 3" pieces one for each side out of a full tile. So a little more than half the cost to cut.

For what it's worth, if you're going to have stuff stored along either wall the off-center pattern may be less noticeable.

For me I would cut my cutting in half and just cut on the one side. Make sure you leave room for expansion and contraction. Also, use the small piece on whatever side is likely to be covered by other things in your garage
