Garages: are they for parking in?

Seeing this questioned in another thread, I had to ask what everyone here thinks?

For the record, mine is a two door (plus a man door), zero car garage. But my Jeep has been parked behind each door at least once, though that was a long time ago. Only one door currently is able to be opened, and I either park the lawn mower or snow blower behind it, depending on the season.

I had a two car garage,my wife passed away after 27 years of married life,so I rented out my house,the renters have packed the garage with their stuff,so now my car sits outside where I'm living.

Depends on the garage. I currently have a 24x32 garage that the only thing parked in it is the mower and gator. I can get one vehicle in there if I take those two out. I am in the process of getting bids for adding a 30x36 three bay garage onto the house, just to park the daily drivers. I also have plans to add onto the detached garage so that I can have a shop and a garage. I guess after talking it out, a garage is for parking and a shop is for working in.

My garage is really weird. It was built in the 1940s, and it's extremely low to the ground. The ceiling is less than 7 ft. My Tacoma is too tall to fit inside. Plus, it's at an odd angle to the driveway. You have to make a 90 degree turn to get into the garage. It was used as a boat repair shop by the prior owner, so I'm sure that has something to do with the setup.

My new pole barn will have some cars in it as soon as I get the interior finished. Although, no vehicle under 40 years old will be allowed.

Basically this. I have a 12x22 garage for parking the wife’s car and I have my 28x32 shop for my project car. It works for us.

My Jeep is in pieces but parked in there, and will allow the wife to park in there if severe weather is coming, but that's about it. So combination of 3 and 4.

Have a 3 car for parking cars in, and there are 3 cars in it. Have a 4th bay that's perpendicular to the 3 car. It's abig 1 car (24x15) that I use as my general purpose workshop/workspace. Only that 1 car is heated/cooled.

I voted yes, but in my situation we have a 3 car attached garage for the wife's SUV, my truck and in the 3rd bay we store our snowmobiles. The "Real" garage/shop is the adjacent 30 x 45 next to the house where the other fun stuff is kept and work is done in.

Yes. When the house was built 3 years ago, we sited the house and the driveway to allow an easy shot from the street in the garage. Our POA requires side-load garages so most houses requires a ninety degree turn to get a vehicle in, so most of our neighbors have only one or zero vehicles parked in the garage.

We also have a 24x32 detached garage that is my shop. Currently, my wife parks in the attached garage. Most of the stuff from my shop is in the other half while I insulate and drywall the detached garage.

We have a two car garage that always has the wife's 454SS in it and really only fits one vehicle. So kinda of a combo of option 1 and 4. But it is also my 'shop' space for working on vehicles, home projects and what ever else and it's also storage space since we don't have a basement... We do have a shed that the mower lives in and is also a storage space for outdoor type stuff.

Both! But, ideally I'd have one garage for parking daily drivers and another for project/collector car storage + workshop. Until I win the lottery to afford the aforementioned setup I'm stuck with a miniature "2 car" garage in which I store my track car - all other vehicles are parked out in the elements on the driveway.

20-ishx27 attached "3-car" here. There are 3 vehicles in it, the two on the ends are parked tight to the side wall. I have to pull one or more out for any real work. My wife would probably divorce me (or at least "cut me off") if I tried to make her park outside for anything more than a couple days.

I haven't done much to it yet, but I have plans to make it more usable in the future. Everything is going to have to be portable/movable/foldable to an extent. Will be purchasing a 4-post lift in the future to take advantage of the 10.5-ft ceilings.

No room on the lot for a detached...so this is going to have to make do until we can move up/out to a place with more land. Fortunately I do have a 12x16 shed out back (needs insulation, electric and heat added) that will serve as a place to tinker with stuff and/or serve as a wood shop.

I voted for number 4 but that's not completely true. The race car often sits in the shop but the daily drivers are almost never in there unless their broken.

Someone asks this question every few months, but there's no one answer that will apply to all people. I can keep my cars in the garage along with all my junk (I have a big garage) but others have different situations.

3 car wide but only a double door. 3rd stall has a slight setback ~18" and that area is landscaped so the front does not look like a fire station. 3rd "stall" is my workshop.

Cars sleep in the garage every night.

Have a 2 car attached garage. All of my woodworking machines are on mobile bases. Wife's car is in the garage every night. She told me I could do whatever i wanted in the garage (within reason and sanity) as long as she could park her car in there every night. My run around vehicle sits outside. Works for us. At one time we could park 2 cars in the garage; I was told by a coworker that was Un-American.

Now that we have sufficient space, our attached, oversize one car garage is strictly for parking (and a gas grille and a few other small items). We have a big barn for a shop. In our last house, we had no basement, attic, or much in the way of closets. No room for a shed or other outbuilding. Where are you going to put stuff? Our new house was specifically designed to eliminate this problem.

In the first neighborhood where we owned a home, a fair number of older homes had their garages converted to rooms. The cars stayed in the driveway or on the street, and I guess all the other stuff was in the back yards.

I only have a 20 x 22 attached garage, which is my shop. No outbuildings. And by shop, i mean my place for me to work on my cars. It's barely big enough for 2 cars, but with my junk in there only one car fits right now. And I have 5 cars, so needless to say most of them sit outside. However there is almost always a car in the garage, whether I'm working on it or just storing it there. Hopefully some day I'll be able to build a nice detached shop and use the garage for parking and storage.

Mine is used for a variety of activities, Cooking, sausage and jerky making, wood working, vehicle repairs and maintenance, parties, storage, you name it, and it's probably happened in there. It is a drive under, so it is somewhat climate controlled.
But I park in it. Occasionally one or both of our vehicles will get pushed outside while a project is going on in there, but as soon as possible, they are both back inside where it's warm/cool depending on the season and dry.
Our vehicles are low mileage and have been garage kept since day one and they show it.
Our '14 Journey has ~27K on it and looks new, my '08 Ram has ~65K on it and still looks darn near new.
I think it will pay off when we trade or sell. If not, we have nice clean cars to drive.

Our house came with a two car. I added an oversized one car & took an adjoining guest room as a shop area. Total sq. footage is slightly larger than a two car. I kept two cars & several motorcycles for a few years, but when I aged out of motorcycles I put my convertible in the new garage. We now have two convertibles & an SUV inside. I never saw the advantage of leaving over $100,000 sitting out in the weather if I didn't have to.

Uh, to make up for the loss of the guest room I added a second floor with a LARGE master suite & a guest room that some mistake for the master at first glance. When I first drew it out my wife said "you build me THAT house, & I'll never ask for anything else!" We both look back at that comment & laugh...

2 car (actually an oversized 1 car) attached. Both vehicles live in it daily, and I have a small workbench built in the back. I built shelving everywhere, including above the door header, to store stuff. 30 gallon upright compressor buried in the back corner next to the rolling toolbox. Everything else is in a 10x14 shed in the back yard. It's cramped but workable....next house will have a much larger garage, that's for sure. To do any maintenance to either vehicle I have to pull the other one outside

I don't have a garage. When we bought our place we converted the detached 2 car garage into living space. I have a 16X20 shop but it's not in a place to park a vehicle. 16 years ago I needed conditioned space. Now with 2 teenagers and a 20 year old I am thinking of converting it back into a garage. The wife doesn't know that as yet...

☒ Yes, all the time. But I back the cars out when I need to, because my garage is frequently my shop.


The two big empty spaces makes for a roomy workspace. Then when I'm done, I wheel the tools, equipment, etc. to their storage spots and park in the garage.

It's the best of both worlds - my wife thinks the garage is mainly for parking, I think the garage is mainly for working in.
