IMHO, Cheap and Good are mutually exclusive. I prefer the Stainless Steel Insinkeraror.

I once bought a Moen and it has been fine.

I installed one of those about 3 months ago after moving to NC where we have a septic system. This thing is powerful! Love it ! It double grinds the waste into almost a slurry and injects enzymes to break down the food further. Whether or not the enzymes have any discernible effect on the grounded up food slurry, I don’t know.

Food scraps in the trash can instead of the septic system make the thought of whether it's a faster break down irrelevant.

We send almost nothing food related down our drains and had to have the tank pumped and the system inspected as a requirement of selling the home. The septic guy specifically stated that he could tell that we didn't put food down the drain based on the condition of the contents of the tank.

Is it really that bad to have one when on a septic system? I find a lot of differing opinions. Any real world experiences?

I had an old bag (70?) of a customer rip me a new *******. Told me the disposal was a POS and kept clogging in her new house (1/2hp badger).

She was grinding up chicken bones vs throwing them in the trash. Told me the bones stink in the trash can so instead she’s using the “garbage disposal”!

I told her to have her husband take the trash out more often.

UFB.
yep, we got rid of 2 gadgets in the kitchen, the dishwasher and the disposal.

Trash goes in the trash, not the sink.
Wife won't use dishwashers, or laundry machines for that matter. Everything is done by hand.

From 1969 through 2007 all my homes were on septic. All had disposals. No septic issues caused by the disposals.

My garbage disposal went out today. It's not quite 3 years old. What's a good garbage disposal to get. I'd like to stay under $150, but if I need to spend more I will. The current one is listed as a 1/3 HP and is just a cheap builder grade unit.
Here I'am 4 year late to reply LOL, well I hope someone finds this comment helpful, HP have little to do with price there are other qualities to check in order to see if that Garbage Disposal is worth it or not (can live up to 8-12 years).
Fist build material of the Disposal play a huge role as you should always aim for Stainless Steel, then you should focus on Warranty and Brand Reputation MOEN and Insinkenator are the leaders.
Last thing for HP:
  • 1/3 HP: Suitable for light use, ideal for small households with minimal food waste.
  • 1/2 HP: Common for moderate use, fitting for small to medium-sized households.
  • 3/4 HP to 1 HP: Best for heavy use, larger households, or frequent cooking. Provides more power to handle tougher food scraps.
Here is an article with detailed review for the top garbage disposals based on users reviews

I'm remodeling my kitchen, which includes installing a new apron style sink, undermount. Its a big double sink style. The old sink I installed back in 2003 is a top mount big/small basin style with the garbage disposal installed below the small basin. I never liked having a garbage disposal. My house is a contemporary tri-level, where the kitchen drain plumbing runs near horizontal nearly 20' through the lower level ceiling before dropping into the sewer stack in the basement.

My ex had a habit of crammin all sorts of kitchen waste into the disposal, and I was always expecting I'd have to someday tear open the ceiling below to replace all the drain lines. I already had to reuild the rotted out Y-connections of the drains below that area below the kitchen, mostly because of a plugged vent line. I replaced the entire Y-drains setup and cleared the vent line (added a vented cap on it). So with the kitchen remodel I plan to take the garbage disposal out entirely. It hasn't been used since my ex moved out in 2008. My wife (the one I wished I had married long ago) doesn't use the garbage disposal either, and has no need for it with the new sink. So my question is, how many here really need a garbage disposal?
