Garbage Disposals

Funny that this thread comes up now (not really). We gutted and remodeled our kitchen this summer and fall. Bought a Badger 1/2 hp disposer thinking that its just the wife and me and we don't put that much down it. The first one was bad out of the box. It sounded like someone put tiny ball bearings down it. We couldn't find the receipt so I bought a second one, swapped them out and returned the first one. The second one lasted about 6 weeks and is starting to sound the same.

I installed a Waste King 9950 Legend Series 3/4 HP Continuous Feed in our kitchen under a Kohler cast iron sink. Quiet and powerful enough for us.

IMHO, these are the best kitchen sinks out there ! The one I got was an EXCEPTONIAL deal. White, single bowl, 4 hole, top mount, cast iron Home Depot $187

Not exactly disposer related but may help with installation of the new components.:

Recently had to replace the kitchen faucet. I found that my car creeper was just right right height to form a "platform" with the cabinet bottom. I put an old blanket on it and the cabinet bottom and I could side my head and arms into the cabinet easily. Dodging the waste lines was different matter.

They are made by the same company, that's about it. I would never buy a Badger again if I could afford better. I would buy another Insinkerator in a heartbeat.

The point that you missed is that Insinkerator makes several product lines. What you installed wasn't just labeled "Insinkerator". It was one model of a specific line.

Looking at the sink flange alone you can't tell one from another. They all say InSinkErator.

I installed a stainless steel one after the old one rusted out. We will see if it lasts longer.

Ok so Kohler enameled cast iron seems and sounds good.....they are pricey, but whatever. I wont have to worry about replacing it

How well do they clean up........I will most likely getting an earth tone color, sand, beige, etc

What about the granite?

I have been a licensed plumber for 30 years and although I don't do residential I only have bought and recommend the cheapest insinkerator disposal. They are quiet and how often do you really run them anyways. Even the smallest HP will dice up anything you are throwing down there and that is only meat and veggies. Go small and keep your money home on this one.

Spotted this 1hp unit on the Amazon deals site today for $150.

I'm a believer in the "more power is better" theory. We've installed 1hp contractor-grade units in our first home (now a rental) and our current home – both have been going strong for 16 and 14 years respectively.

Should hopefully work as good as my vintage 3/4 HP disposal I am currently using from Montgomery Ward's

That is made for sears by insinkerator, It is a very good model and should be very quiet. If it is noisy it is due to your sink.

I originally had a Sink Master as it was about the lightest I could find for my cheap stainless steel sink, about 30 or so years ago. When we remodeled the kitchen about 10 years ago, I bought a Swanstone sink and a new In-Sink-Erator. First one was about 45 bucks, the second about 80. Both units gave me remarkable service. I sold the house with the last one still in it. Don't have one in the new house, as it's actually illegal here with septic. Doesn't make any sense to me though, as we used to only wash dinner plates into it. That was about all the food it would get. Since I still wash dishes in the sink, you'd think they'd want the food as small as it could get. Ergo, garbage disposer.

Not exactly disposal related, but I noticed that the stainless steel sinks in the new homes my company builds have a rubber type mat bonded to the underside of the sink bowls. I suspect this mat is to deaden noise and vibration. Similar concept to Fat Mat, Dynamat, etc.

Yeah, but they don't work too well, if the sink itself is cheap. I had that mat on mine, but still wouldn't have put any but the lightest disposer on it. That sink was not only inexpensive, but cheaply built as well. But, I must say it did me for over 20 years with that light Sink Master in it, and I never needed more. When I remodeled, I put a $450 Swanstone sink in, and could really tell the difference in vibration. There was hardly even any noise with the new unit.
