Anyone fab a garden hose reel from a vehicle wheel? I have a couple hub bearings and wheels and looking to make a garden hose reel with a handle that would allow for reeling it in. But not sure how to design it so the hose doesn’t twist. Is there a swivel that works for this?

I hauled off a load of scrap from a local dealership a while back. Someone drove a BMW through the car wash and scratched the fancy $800 wheel, so it was in the scrap pile. I have been saving it for this exact kind of project but I was planning on leaving the wheel stationary and just hanging the coiled up hose on it. I'll be following this one for sure!

It would probably be worthwhile if you could also get the original hub + bearing as well so you don't have to "reinvent the wheel" there :D

I took a wheel bearing off my 2002 GMC Yukon and intended to use it for a welding positioner, but I think it would work ideally well for this type of use as well. Can't speculate on the feasibility of the "dish" on the actual wheel though.

A front wheel drive hub with a steering wheel would make a good wind up set up.

I'm still looking for a good swivel. The ones I've seen in person don't seem to be built well enough or spin freely enough where I think they will spin alright without catching/breaking. I'm going to check out a plumbing supply house next week to see if I can find something.

I like that ford rim. I'm planning on doing something similar to handle the capacity of the hose, although I was going to tack on 16 ga sheet and paint it black to resemble the tire. Rod like this might be nicer.

The problem with most auto wheels is that they don't have a wide enough lip on them to hold enough wraps of hose. Sure you can get wide wheels but you need something on the edge to keep the hose from slipping off. You can get away with it if the wheel is stationary and/or mounted to a wall like a regular hose hanger, but if you want it to rotate like a hose reel it needs a bigger lip.

Pressure Parts direct has all kinds of fittings but I recently bought a reel from Liberty I think that was priced right, decent swivel and about 60$ or so.
