O.K. here's the deal. I live in a townhouse complex where the association pretty much has their nose in everybody's business . I have a 100' craftsman hose that is a pain in the *** to lug in and out of the garage. I need some way of storing it outside and would like to be able to reel it up. Most of the ones I have seen are garbage plastic ones that break after a couple of years and I do not want some industrial one with pneumatic tires. ( I do like those but I'm sure I'll get a letter from the condo cops) Have you guys /gals made any? Or.... Has anybody bought a decent one?? I would say that $150.00 would be my max but would pay a little more if it was nice. I do have to apologize because I feel this is such a lame home depot-ish question, but there seems to be some talent here and I don't have to drive around.

have you see at some of the older service/gas station where they had the air and water right at the gas island.
get a large used retractable reel and install it in a pit in the ground so nothing shows but the hose end

An old car wheel makes a nice hose reel if you can bolt the car wheel to the wall. In my old house, I had a wheel bolted to the wall and it had a DeSoto hubcap on it. That house has had three different owners in the last 15 years, but the old DeSoto capped wheel is still there bolted on the wall.

I also have a couple of Rapid Reels and agree they are excellent. I also made a major mistake recently by buying one of these:

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3BA14

This Legacy hose reel has to be the biggest POS I have EVER purchased. In fact, I would call it a ripoff at $20. Not anywhere near high enough quality for HF, even!

It lasted all of five minutes. The end of the hose blew off as soon as I hooked it up for the first time, and when I took it apart to replace the hose, I discovered just how cheap all of it is. Not just all plastic, but all soft, brittle plastic. I hope no one else will make the same mistake on this.

For the money, I'd get another Rapid Reel in a second.

Good to know about the Griot/Rapid Reel. I like the alum. with the wheels. I use something like Grainger -- but mine was a diff. brand -- more expensive I think, and it's held up well. We use it to hose down a section of concrete in a warehouse where we saw metal. The hose it came with is synthetic which in my case is nice because of the chemicals I'm dealing with. Natural rubber would get eaten up, I think. But still the quality of the Rapid Reel looks to be better.

I have 4 hoses attached around my house. I use reels on the 2 out back and for the 2 in the front of the house I use 50' hoses and I coil them up in large decorative flower pots. You can't see the hose when it's down in the flower pot. I also use good quality brass quick connects on all the hoses, spigots, sprinklers, spray nozzles, etc. so it's all easily movable and transferable. If I need more than 50' of hose I can easily add 25' - 50' from one of the other corners of the house. If you go this route just make sure there's at least one hole at the bottom of the pot for rain water to drain out.

Another vote for RapidReel. Had several of their Triton models and waiting on delivery of a new Model 1041-GH wall-mount hose. The products are consistently well made, durable, and easy to assemble and use on a day-to-day basis. Pity they aren't manufactured domestically.

Yeah, I noticed they moved production offshore. I'm still thinking about getting one for my house. They seem like the only game in town in that for that quality / price range.

I have a rubber tired metal one that I bought from Tractor Supply. It is all right for storing the hose on, but because of the type of hose I have, the no-kink, very flexible hose will collapse while on the reel, and you get very little flow, if you only unroll a few feet of it, also the connection on the reel is smaller than the ID of the hose, so even with all the hose unrolled, it restricts the water flow.
If I want to use the sprinkler, I still have to take all the hose off the reel, and connect it directly to the hydrant.

Buy a quality hose reel you like, then make a plywood/2x2 reinforced box to cover it. Stain it or paint it to match the house/deck. Put some water sealer on all surfaces it so it will last a long time.

It doesn't even need to cover the back or bottom.

I guess you could route a long oval hole for the hose to come out.
