I did eventually come up with a dust collection solution that I was happy with:
An oneida ultimate dust deputy

.. attached to a festool ctl vac:

The vac contains a tiny dust bag, and would be pretty impractical without the UDD , but the cyclone collection is so effective that the bag is still completely empty after a month of use. The main attraction in my set-up is that it is tiny and fits neatly under my workbench.
I spent quite a lot of time researching a solution that would work for me and I am really pleased with the end result. I became mildly obsessed with static electricity during my bout of research and - for those of you interested in that kind of thing - I blogged about it in excruciating detail here:
